Whittell Warriors earn Nevada state baseball tournament spot

Whittell High School's varsity baseball team will be defending their 2014 Nevada State Title this week as they head to the 2015 NIAA Division IV Tournament in Las Vegas.

The Warriors went 2-1 this weekend's Northern Nevada playoffs, getting wins over Wells and Mineral County.

The boys from the South Shore will enter the State Tournament as the number two seed from the north. Virginia City is number one.

South Tahoe High Baseball Team still alive in NIAA-1A Tournament

The South Tahoe High varsity baseball team took their 16-8 league record into the NIAA 1-A Northern League Baseball Tournament Friday, coming out of the first day of games still in the hunt for a state tournament bid.

If the Vikings get by Elko Saturday morning, they'll meet up with the number one seed Churchill County in the NIAA-IA Championship game.

Controversy surrounds elimination of "God" and "Country" from South Tahoe Little League pledge

The National Little League pledge, written by Peter J. McGovern in 1954, reads as follows:

I trust in God
I love my country
And will respect its laws
I will play fair
And strive to win
But win or lose
I will always do my best

It has long been a tradition in South Lake Tahoe where players recite the pledge prior to every Major Division Little League game.

That tradition ended this year as the local Board of Directors decided to remove the words "God" and "country" from the pledge so it would read like this:

I will play fair
And strive to win
But win or lose

Opening Day for South Tahoe Little League Saturday

An Opening Day celebration is planned at the South Tahoe Little League Complex this Saturday, April 25th. A parade and ribbon cutting ceremony are planned prior to the start of scheduled games. The parade will start on the street next to the South Tahoe Middle School tennis courts at 9:00 a.m. with a planned parade path to follow Lyons Avenue to Rufus Allen, and into the major’s field by way of the snack shack entrance. Parking will not be available at South Tahoe Middle School due to the eWaste collection event. Parking is available along Rufus Allen Blvd.

Whittell Warriors remain undefeated on the season: 13-0

The Whittell High School varsity baseball team is trying to extend their record to 14-0 Wednesday afternoon as they host Coleville at the Warrior's field in a 2 p.m. match-up.

On Tuesday, the boys in red beat Sierra Lutheran by a score of 12-1 which came on the heels of their double header win over Eureka on March 28 where they beat Vandals 11-1 and 15-7.

South Tahoe High Baseball team riding a seven game win streak

After a slow start, Coach Starbuck Teevan and his varsity baseball team from South Tahoe High have won their last seven games, bringing their league record to 7-3. The Vikings are now 4-0 at home after their opening home stand March 27-31.

The team hosted Truckee High School Friday afternoon, and for two games on Saturday. South Tahoe beat the Wolverines 4-1, 9-5 and 15-3. They also beat Dayton on Tuesday afternoon by a score of 10-7.

The other three wins in this streak were from games against Sparks March 20-21. They beat the Railroaders by scores of 10-5, 8-6 and 6-5.

South Tahoe National Little League Tryouts

South Tahoe baseball program fundraising for new scoreboard

There has been a lot of work completed on the baseball fields in South Lake Tahoe, including a new diamond for local little league teams. One needed item wasn't on the list of projects completed with Measure S funds was replacing the old and broken scoreboard so a fundraising effort has begun to replace it.

South Tahoe High varsity baseball coach Starbuck Teevan started a GoFundMe page in order to help with the $18,500 needed for a new scoreboard.

Babe Ruth 2015 Registration

It is now time to sign up to play in the 2015 Babe Ruth season in South Lake Tahoe.

The next sign updates will be on January 21 and 28 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Kahle Community Center, February 5 and 25 at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and then again at the Ice Arena at the same time on March 5.

Tryouts will then be held on Sunday March 22 and 29 at 10 a.m.

The Babe Ruth League is expecting a six team with with 12 players on each team. Joining the players on each roster will be a Manager, Coach and Assistant Coach (a Varsity Player).

Even though the calendar still says winter, it's time to sign up for little league. Registration for the 2015 South Tahoe National Little League season will be held on three upcoming dates.

In-person registration will be held at Kahle Community Center on Tuesday, Jan. 27 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the Tahoe Ice Arena on Thursday, Feb. 5 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and at Tahoe Valley Elementary School on Monday, Feb. 9 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Gene Upshaw Classic moves to Schaffer's Mill for 2015 tournament

The Gene Upshaw Memorial Golf Classic is moving to Truckee's Schaffer's Mill in 2015, the seventh year of the tournament.

Upshaw, who played often in South Lake Tahoe's American Century Celebrity Golf, withdrew from the 2008 tournament held July 11-13 that year. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in North Lake Tahoe just a month later. He had a home on the North Shore and was hospitalized at Tahoe Truckee Hospital where he died on August 20, 2008.

Suspect sought in Burglary of Mi Pueblo Market in South Lake Tahoe

The Mi Pueblo Market on Pioneer Trail was burglarized on Sunday morning at approximately 2:19 a.m. The unidentified suspect used a crow bar to force his way into the business. Once inside, he stole coins, phone cards and cash. The total amount of loss to the business is still being determined.

The suspect attempted to conceal his identity by wearing a hat, gloves and a face mask during the burglary.

Mark Rypien wins closest to the hole contest; Winnings go to Tahoe Fund

On July 18th 15 of some of the world’s most legendary athletes and entertainers competed in Lake Tahoe for the Korbel Closest-to-the-Pin Challenge as part of the American Century Championship, currently being played at the Edgewood Golf Course. NFL Former Pro Bowl Quarterback Mark Rypien who was the inaugural tournament champion took home the title after teeing off from Hole 17 and placing his ball just seven feet away from the pin winning a $5,000 donation for The Tahoe Fund from the Korbel Toast Life® Foundation.

South Tahoe Pop Warner Cheer & Football Sign Ups

Though it's still baseball season, plans have been forming for the 2014 fall season of Pop Warner Football & Cheer.

Sign ups start Tuesday, May 27. Players have three opportunities to sign up, tonight, June 17 and June 19.

The program if open to boys and girls ages 5-14 (must be 5 as of 08/01/14 to age 14 as of 08/01/14).

South Tahoe High Baseball Team Makes Best of First Trip to State Tournament

For the first time in school history, the South Tahoe High Vikings made it to the Nevada Baseball State Division 1-A Tournament.

The Vikings lost their opening game on Thursday to #1 seed in the tournament, Faith Lutheran of Las Vegas, by a score of 17-6. They bounced back for game 2 on Friday morning. They beat Chaparall High School of Las Vegas, 13-8.

South Tahoe High Varsity Baseball Team Headed to State Tournament

The South Tahoe Vikings varsity baseball team is headed to the Nevada State Division 1-A Tournament May 22-24 after taking 2nd place in the Northern Championships Saturday.

Friday's Northern Nevada Tournament action saw South Tahoe beat Number 1 seed Elko in the morning game, followed by Fallon beating Spring Creek in the afternoon and South Tahoe losing to the Fallon team in the nightcap.

South Tahoe had the morning game again on Saturday, in which they beat Spring Creek by a score of 10-8.

South Tahoe Vikings Host Division 1a Playoffs This Week

For the first time in 20 years, the South Tahoe Vikings varsity baseball team has made it to the Nevada State Playoffs. This is only the second time in school history for the team to make it to the post season, and the last time was in 1994, when current Viking coach Starbuck Teevan was a junior on the team.

They join Elko, Churchill County and Spring Creek in this weekend's Division 1a playoffs to be held Friday and Saturday at South Lake Tahoe's Todd Fields.

Santee, California becomes 9th city to declare Oct 25 as “Rajan Zed Day”

City of Santee in California has become the ninth city in USA to declare October 25 as “Rajan Zed Day” after religious statesman Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism and lives in Reno.

Cities of Hartford (Connecticut), Taylorsville (Utah), Madera (California), Sparks (Nevada), Chowchilla (California), Sanger (California), Exeter (California) and Tulare (California) have already declared October 25 as “Rajan Zed Day”. City of Reno has also proclaimed a day in Zed’s recognition twice in the past.

South Lake Tahoe Police K9 Trials

Fifty canine (K9) teams are expected at this year's South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association's annual K9 trials on October 5.

Robbery at South Lake Tahoe El Dorado Savings Bank

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is requesting assistance from the public to help identify the suspect who robbed the El Dorado Savings and Loan at 3443 Lake Tahoe Boulevard this morning around 9:30am.

Based on surveillance footage, the suspect appears to be a white male adult in his fifties, approximately 6’-2” tall, weight proportionate to height, wearing a beige baseball cap, a short-sleeved plaid button down shirt, khaki cargo shorts and flip flop sandals.

The suspect walked into the bank and presented the teller with a demand note. The suspect claimed to be armed but did not display a weapon.

Raccoon skinning leads to arrest of at-large parolee, registered sex offender

South Lake Tahoe police arrested a man on Monday for allegedly skinning a raccoon after a foot chase ended on the South Tahoe Middle School ball field.

Kevin Burroughs, 37, faces several charges including unlawful taking of wildlife. He is also a parolee and a registered sex offender out of California and had a felony warrant for being a parolee-at-large. The raccoon’s remains were recovered and destroyed by Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care.

Attempted bank robbery at El Dorado Savings

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is requesting assistance from the public to help identify a suspect, who attempted to rob the El Dorado Savings Bank located at 3443 Lake Tahoe Blvd, in the Bijou Shopping Center, at about 3:30 this afternoon.
