Lake Tahoe agency hosts bicycle community planners from Utah and Oregon

UPDATED: As Lake Tahoe continues to earn the respectable distinction of having bicycle-friendly communities, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency will host experts from two well-established cities to discuss ways the basin can improve its trails and paths.
The TRPA has invited bicycle community planners from Portland, Oregon and Park City, Utah for a community speaker panel today, Thursday, July 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lake Tahoe Community College in the Board Room. A similar speaker panel was held on Wednesday at Kings Beach.

Volunteers pitch in with Al Tahoe neighborhood clean-up

Neighbors in Al Tahoe participated in a volunteer clean-up effort Saturday as an outcome of their most recent neighborhood meeting. Gerry and Jill Carter were the first to arrive and started collecting trash and debris at Regan Beach.
A local neighbor who was unable to tackle years of mounting debris from previous tenants was the recipient of a group volunteer effort. With the help of a volunteer with a trailer, the group was able to remove an old sofa, dilapidated shed remnants and an assortment of materials which were hauled off the property and created a dramatic improvement.

Lake Tahoe Basin residents and visitors are invited to help remove one of Tahoe’s most prolific aquatic invasive weeds, Eurasian watermilfoil, during a community volunteer event at Baldwin Beach on Sunday, July 15.
The project is a partnership of the League to Save Lake Tahoe, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. Preventing the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species is a top priority for all three agencies.

The League to Save Lake Tahoe is partnering with the U.S. Forest Service this summer for two community beach clean-up days around Lake Tahoe. Volunteers will be helping to clean-up our beautiful beaches. Keeping Tahoe clean and blue is a year round effort and we need the help of residents and visitors alike.

After-fireworks party cleanup at El Dorado and Regan beaches

Join K&K Services on Thursday for its 14th annual 5th of July Volunteer Beach Cleanup. Beginning at 6 a.m. volunteers will pick up what everyone else left behind after the fireworks show. The cleanup begins on El Dorado Beach and then moves along to Regan Beach. According to organizer Kenny Curtzwiler, the cleanup usually yields about 40 yards of trash. El Dorado Beach is located on Highway 50 at Lakeview Avenue. The community is invited. Bring gloves.

Best bet: leave your pets at home during July 4 fireworks

If you don't want to see the pooch get all aggro with people and other dogs on the beach during the July 4 fireworks show, your best is to leave 'em at home. So says the U.S. Forest Service, which wrote a friendly reminder to pet owners that the noise from the fireworks and large crowds can make your dog, cat, rat, snake, whatever — tense and agitated. And why would you want your pets to become unhinged as you and others are trying to watch the show?

Forest Service continues project to eliminate invasive weeds from the Lake Tahoe Basin

Public land managers will continue a project to eradicate, control, and contain known and future infestations of “invasive weeds” using chemical treatment. Work will begin Monday, July 9 through Thursday, July 12, 2012, according to the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

Sessions, webinar offers overview of Lake Tahoe Forest Service plan alternatives

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has opened comments on its Forest Plan through August 30, 2012. In doing so it has also planned four information meetings and will provide an interactive webinar to assist the public with review, commenting and revision of the plan.
The information sessions include work stations and will provide an overview of the four plan alternatives detailed in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement. Alternatives address vegetation, fire and fuels, wildlife habitat, watershed and recreation and access.

Fourth of July Lake Tahoe restrictions include fireworks, holiday booze ban at Zephyr Cove and Nevada beach

Residents and visitors are urged to help protect public safety and the environment during the Fourth of July holiday by keeping wildfire prevention in mind.
The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management unit reminds folks that having fireworks of any kind — and sparklers are considered fireworks — is illegal in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Campfires are not permitted on Forest Service beaches or in the general forest. For Wednesday, July 4, 2012, only, personal barbecues are allowed at Nevada, Pope and Baldwin beaches but are not permitted on any other Forest Service beaches or in the general forest.

Breezy today in the Lake Tahoe Basin, Red Flag warning in Central Sierra, Western Nevada

Breezy conditions in the Lake Tahoe Basin will persist Monday prompting a Lake Wind Advisory by the National Weather Service in Reno, while much of the Sierra south of basin and much of Western Nevada falls under a Red Flag warning.

An earthquake on Friday night was reported at 8:51 p.m. centered 6 miles north of Incline Village at Lake Tahoe, registering a preliminary magnitude of 4.2, according to the Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno and the USGS. Go here for updates. The magnitude is preliminary.

TRPA to wrap up technical comment period with two days of meetings

The initial comment period on the environmental study of the Lake Tahoe Regional Plan Update will close next week at a special two-day meeting of the Governing Board June 27 and 28. However, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency is encouraging public input on the draft policy updates now and throughout the summer and fall as the update heads for a final decision by the TRPA Governing Board this December, according to the Agency.

Partial Road Closure on Lakeview Avenue for Wednesday Lakeview Commons ceremony

To facilitate this event and to minimize the potential for traffic hazards between motor vehicles and pedestrians in this area, a one block section of Lakeview Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning at 11 a.m., according to the city in a press release.
