Smart towns know how to capitalize on active and bike tourism

South Lake Tahoe can create a sustainable economy if we focus on "active tourism." This was the message relayed by the panel of speakers at Wednesday's Tahoe Talk series at Lake Tahoe Community College.

If the 15 page spread about Lake Tahoe in the May edition of Bike magazine is any indication, people know about the activity/recreation based tourism awaiting them in Tahoe, and they're about to come.

Are we ready?,

Just about.

Daniel Robert Rix, Tahoe Douglas Rotarian

Dan Rix, affectionately known as “Papa Dan” to his family, passed away peacefully at his home in South Lake Tahoe on February 11, 2015 at the age of 73 after a brave and courageous battle with a long illness. Dan was born December 30, 1941 in Pueblo, CO to Dorothy Mae and George Robert Rix and spent his childhood growing up in Daly City (CA). He eventually moved to Tulare (CA) with his family where he graduated from Tulare Union HS in 1959.

South Tahoe High Junior Mykala Muskovitz is spending Sunday participating in Tour de Tahoe, the annual bike ride around Lake Tahoe. The 16 year old doesn't just ride, which most of us would find as a big enough accomplishment, she raises money while doing so.

For the third year, Mykala is riding to raise money for a local charity.

In 2011 as an 8th grader, she made the 72 mile ride in 6 hours and raised over $2,000 for Boys and Girls Club and for winter hats and gloves for children at Live Violence Free.

There is a new way to enjoy two lakes with just a quick bike ride along the bike trail just completed by the U.S. Forest Service.

The Fallen Leaf Bike Path connects cyclists from the Fallen Leaf Lake Campground to the Pope Baldwin National Recreation Trail. The trail offers riders a safe and exciting alternative.

As reported by South Tahoe Now in April, the new trail also provided installation of bmps, upgrades, reconstruction and relocation of adjacent unauthorized trails.

America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride 2014

Every year since I've had a channel I have been covering Bike The West's signature bicycling event America's Most Beautiful Bike ride; though, over the years I've varied dramatically on how I have chosen to cover it. By tradition, I always cover the bicycle race on foot to give me a different perspective to the people who cover it on bicycle helmet cams or in a car.

Hike or Bike the Tahoe Rim Trail in Bits and Pieces This Summer

Does hiking or biking the 165 miles of the Tahoe Rim Trail seem interesting but rather daunting?

The Tahoe Rim Trail Challenge may be just what the doctor ordered since you have all summer to accomplish the whole trail.

Hikers can choose to walk six easy treks of two to six miles each and become a Tahoe Rim Trail Challenger, or, if they want a bit more challenge, there are six moderate hikes of six to 12 miles each to earn Trail Blazer status.

IRONMAN in Lake Tahoe: A Spectator's View

Even the name IRONMAN tells the story. After watching a day of swimming, biking and running it was proven to me that these athletes must be made of iron, or, at least, something different than my composition. Even having the trademark name in all capital letters gives one a sense of strength.

Lake Tahoe Marathon is More Than Just a Race

For some, their only connection to the Lake Tahoe Marathon is the billboard sign they see attached to a pick up around South Lake Tahoe. For others, it’s an amazing series of races that fill the south and west shore for several days every fall.

The man behind the race is Les Wright, long time South Lake Tahoe local. It is tough to find time to talk to Les these days. He is working 18 hour days and the time left for rest finds his mind full of marathon details, planning and organizing.

I am a big believer in balance. Balancing work and play, exercise and relaxation, the to do’s and the to don’ts. Unfortunately, it seems that many times our virtual see-saw gets pretty lopsided and we’re left stranded in the air with toes dangling, or completely weighed down without any way to get on our feet.
