SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just taking a look at the photos of fudge, cookies, cakes and other treats can make one's mouth water for a delectable taste of heaven.

The Tahoe Love Bakery is up and running out of Erin Renee Hudak's kitchen in South Lake Tahoe. With her cottage business permit, business license and health inspection in place, Erin opened her home-based business on December 19, 2019.

New hotel coming to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The old Super 8 motel on Lake Tahoe Boulevard and adjacent Lotus Pho restaurant in South Lake Tahoe are currently closed as pre-construction activities have begun on a four-story 120-unit Hampton Inn and Suites.

The asbestos abatement has been completed as have the pre-demolition permits and the current two-story building is set for demolition soon. Once that happens, crews will be waiting for the May 1 grading date to get started on what is promised to be a "facelift to the area."

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The St. Joseph Community Land Trust (SJCLT) in South Lake Tahoe provides permanently affordable homes and supportive programs for low and moderate-income residents. They may have a few more to offer if the City Council meeting on Tuesday goes as expected.

Letter: Fire, safety, noise and trash concerns remain with SnowGlobe

Welcome to the ninth year summary of the SnowGlobe Music Festival. This is the first year the TRPA has done any monitoring and the event continues to violate TRPA’s pre-existing rules. We can add air pollution to the list of accomplishments for this event given the recent successful lawsuit by the Center for Environmental Health (CEH). Onsite inspections for building and fire continue to find violations (they have had violations every year) and the fireworks were moved to an open undeveloped area in the forest of Bijou Park this year.

SOS Outreach students spend evening with South Lake Tahoe leaders

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Youth participating in SOS Outreach participated in a leadership evening on Thursday evening where they listened to a panel of three South Lake Tahoe leaders and learned about how to create positive change in breakout sessions.

SOS Outreach is a national youth development nonprofit that mentors at-risk and underserved youth with positive adults through outdoor activities. Youth in their fourth year of the mentor program have been building and practicing leadership skills and other life skills over the past years and were chosen to participate on Thursday.

Golden Bear neighborhood is first South Lake Tahoe National Firewise USA® Designation

150th anniversary of Carson City Mint celebrated with public activities, special coin

Visitors to the Nevada State Museum in Carson City this Tuesday, Feb. 4, will find themselves in history’s front row as the museum celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint. Just as it did 150 years earlier to the day, the Mint’s Coin Press No. 1 will be pressing silver coins, complete with the famous “CC” mint mark.

Fire hits South Lake Tahoe home twice in one night

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A home on Idaho Avenue in South Lake Tahoe had two fires overnight, resulting in damage to both the house and garage.

At 5:52 p.m. February 1, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) was called out to the home after what appears to be ashes placed in the garage caught on fire. The fire was knocked down and after being cleaned up, the fire crew left.

Public invited to workshop on updates to South Lake Tahoe building standards

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe is updating City Code standards that apply to residential development and they are looking for feedback from the community.

They are holding their first public workshop on Monday, February 3 at City Hall from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to stop by and learn about the project.

Their goal is to create clear and objective standards that will create more certainty in the project review process while achieving aesthetic and neighborhood character expectations of the community.

26th annual Classy Crab Dinner at St. Theresa Church

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Saint Theresa Catholic Church's 26th annual Classy Crab Dinner will be held on February 8 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the church's Grace Hall in South Lake Tahoe.

The public is invited to attend the always fun event which includes a lively dessert auction.

The cost is $45 per person ($50 at the door) and reserved tables for 10 are available for an additional $135. Must be 21 or older to attend. Funds raised will fo to Faith Formation programs and parish building maintenance.

Forecast: Weak system followed by above average temperatures in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A ridge of high pressure is building off the southwest coast, one that will bring light wind and warm daytime temperatures with overnight inversions ot Lake Tahoe, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Before it gets here though there is a small system moving through the area that brings a chance of rain and snow to Lake Tahoe at the beginning of the week.

Each day this week will see above-average temperatures. The average daytime high for this week is 40 with a low of 23.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has some scheduled work on roads in the Sierra in the coming week. While the major mountain roadwork is stopped until spring, there is still work being done.

El Dorado County to handle most residential, multi-family and commercial permits for TRPA

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In a move to help property and business owners save time and money, El Dorado County will begin processing additional permits on behalf of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) starting January 28, 2020.

Protecting Lake Tahoe’s environment is the paramount goal of the TRPA and in meeting that goal, a TRPA permit is required for most construction projects inside the Lake Tahoe Basin. This runs the gamut from the addition of a new deck to a sign for a new business.

Cal Tahoe JPA plans on moving ambulances to new home as fire station reopens

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe let the Cal Tahoe JPA know in 2018 they would need their mid-town fire station back so they could increase fire services to the community. Originally planned for the fall of 2019, the move is now getting closer due to a grant to help with the hiring of new firefighters and outfitting its reopening.

New agreement in the works for 56-acre South Lake Tahoe downtown project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The long-discussed 56-acre parcel in the middle of South Lake Tahoe is finally seeing movement again, and both the South Lake Tahoe City Council and El Dorado County Board of Supervisors (BOS) supporting further conversation. A formal agreement between the two is expected later in 2020 with another one-two years of public meetings, consultant review, and planning before plans are implemented. The California Tahoe Conservancy is funding the cost of the consultant, just as they did 30 years ago.

Local subcontractors sought for new Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club project

Haen Constructors is seeking qualified subcontractors to bid on the new Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT) clubhouse, a 10,000 square foot project to be built on the grounds of the current site on Lyons Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.

Construction on the new clubhouse will take place during the 2020 building season.

South Tahoe High students 'building' up their skills for the workforce

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Gone are the old high school woodshop prerequisite napkin holders and cutting boards. In their place are sheds and dog houses built to code, giving their creators valuable life and work skills for their futures.

Students in the South Tahoe High Woodshop 1 classes have been building dog houses, complete with insulation and roofs and sides built with techniques found in residential construction.

Car runs into Trimmer Outpost in Genoa, driver has life-threatening injuries

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - At 6:45 p.m. on New Year's Eve, the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) responded to a single-vehicle crash in Genoa.

The driver of a silver SUV struck the front of Trimmer Outpost, a store in the historic town. Authorities say the driver did not follow the curve of the road and instead ended up driving through the store's parking lot, hitting the building.

NHP says the driver was transported to a Reno hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Trimmer Outpost was scheduled to be closing for store sales in January.

No other information is available at this time.

Plenty of Christmas Tree permits remain available in Lake Tahoe Basin

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Plenty of permits to cut down Christmas trees in the Lake Tahoe Basin remain at both sales locations. Due to permits being sold out after just a week in the past, people were only allowed to buy one of the $10 permits per family this year.

The result is plenty of leftovers.

weather but there is a weak storm expected Wednesday for a chance of light snow. Below average temperatures will rebound to around average mid to late week, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. A stronger storm could impact holiday travel next weekend.

Long lines in South Lake Tahoe at USFS for Christmas tree permits

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Not wanting to end up without a Christmas tree permit this year, a long line of people surrounded the USFS-Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit building in South Lake Tahoe Monday morning. When the doors opened at 8:00 a.m., the lobby immediately filled and the line continued to grow.

Space cleared to make way for new Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club building

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's looking a lot different at the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe facilities at the former Al Tahoe Elementary School on Lyons Avenue.

The current South Lake Tahoe site for BGCLT had major clearing this week to make way for a brand new clubhouse. Old portable buildings were removed as were some trees as crews make way for their multi-million dollar future home.

Vail guests and other Tahoe partners help close funding gap to build Lily Lake Multi-Use Trail

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Thanks to a triple match from Vail Resorts’ EpicPromise guest donation program at Northstar, Heavenly and Kirkwood, completion of the Lily Lake Trail will be a reality in 2020. Earlier this year, the planned 2.1-mile multi-use trail designed to provide new access to Fallen Leaf Lake and Desolation Wilderness faced a $75,000 funding gap.

LTCC Coyotes host the first round of playoffs in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) women's soccer team will be hosting the first round of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) NorCal playoffs on Saturday, November 23.

The LTCC Coyotes ended the regular season as the #1 Junior College Division III team in the country with their record of 18-0-2, a spot they held for weeks. This has been the second consecutive year they went undefeated and haven't lost a game since September 2017.

On Saturday they will be hosting the winner of the West Hills-West Valley game being held Nov. 21.

Douglas County Commissioners to discuss end to monthly meeting in Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - Currently, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners meet once a month at Lake Tahoe, but if Commissioner John Engels gets his way, this week's meeting will be their last at the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority (LTVA) building.

They have been meeting at the lake on the third Thursday of the month, but Engel's presentation will suggest this meeting take place in Minden just as their other three monthly meetings do.

South Lake Tahoe community weighs in on desired characteristics of next superintendent

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) begins their search for a replacement for the retiring superintendent the people tasked with finding the right candidates are reaching out to the community.

What is being developed from public meetings and an online survey will create the profile of what makes up the desired characteristics neede or the person who will move into Dr. James Tarwater's position when he retires in June 2020.

Column: Marching forward with forest health

Last week our collective memories returned to that terrible November morning as a raging wildfire swept through Paradise, California. We woke that morning to images of wholesale devastation as fearsome winds drove racing flames from one town and one home to the next. We were horrified to watch videos of citizens running for their lives, desperately trying to escape the smoke and flames that were engulfing everything in their path. Eighty-five people lost their lives—the deadliest fire in California history— in what we now call the Camp Fire.

Open Houses on proposed snowmobile/winter recreation access around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – There was a lot of public reaction when the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) released their "Proposed Action for the Winter Recreation and Over Snow Vehicle (OSV) Travel Management Project" in September. That document outlined changes to snowmobile access in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
