Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/11/2018 - 11:08pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - At 10:00 a.m. on September 13, 2015, Garden Valley Fire Department personnel responded to a wildland fire in the community of Greenwood in western El Dorado County, on Highway 193 between Cool and Georgetown. Upon arrival they found a residence still smoldering, but burned to the ground.
In the ashes were found the charred remains of Adam Buchanan, 38, his fiancée Molly McAffe, 37, and their 8-year-old son Gavin Buchanan. All three were shot before the cabin was burned down.

Lake Tahoe man from north shore dies from hantavirus

They said the resident likely contracted the virus from rodents in a private residence in the Lake Tahoe region where the resident lived and worked. Health officials do not believe the public is at ongoing risk from the source of infection associated with the fatality.
Body of man missing at Bear Valley recovered by search teams

Jane Drummond-Mullarkey had notified the Alpine County Sheriff's Office at 11:30 p.m. on March 14 when her husband, Thomas Mullarkey, 65, had failed to return to their Arnold cabin.
The family was from Richmond, Calif., and staying at their Sierra cabin.
Amgen cyclist Peter Stetina hits the road from South Lake Tahoe to Kirkwood
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/18/2018 - 4:28pmAmerican professional road cyclist Peter Stetina was in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday, inviting local cyclists to join him on a training run from Sprouts to Kirkwood, and back.
Daniel Knight of Dayton, Nev., the assistant manager of Save Mart in Carson City came to town to join Stetina. Chadwick Clark of South Lake Tahoe, the chef at Camp Galilee in Glenbrook, also joined in. Both ride their bikes to work when weather allows.
Search on for man missing in Alpine County near Bear Valley
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/16/2018 - 1:10pmThere is an active search underway for Thomas Mullarkey after he failed to return to his Arnold, California cabin after a day of skiing at Bear Valley Resort in Alpine County Wednesday.
His wife Jane Drummond-Mullarkey contacted the Alpine County Sheriff's Office at 11:30 p.m. March 14 when her husband did not return. Shortly after, sheriff's personnel located his car at the resort.

Kings Beach Revitalization Project comes to a close, more projects planned for area

Teen accused of killing family moved out of juvenile system in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/30/2017 - 1:27amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been almost two years since Nolen Buchanan of Benicia, California first appeared in a Placerville courtroom as a 16-year-old, charged with the killing of his family in their El Dorado County vacation home and then setting it on fire.
The charred remains of Buchanan's father Adam, 38, his father's fiancée Molly McAffe, 37, and his 8-year-old brother, Gavin, were found in that Greenwood cabin on September 13, 2015.
Since that time, Nolen has been in the Juvenile Treatment Center (JTC) in South Lake Tahoe.
Fire destroys cabin on Echo Lake
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/27/2017 - 5:04pmAn early morning fire destroyed a cabin on the north shore of Echo Lake on Wednesday. Firefighters called to the scene had to get there by boat, the only access to the home.
Crews from Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) responded to the 5:50 a.m. call. The sole occupant had awoken to a smoke filled home and called 911 as they exited the two-story cabin.

A series of earthquakes hit north of Donner Lake early Tuesday morning, starting at 2:02 a.m. with a 4.0 quake and a session of following 14 other tremblers over 1.0 magnitude by 5:43 a.m.
All came from an area 10.5 to 11.8 miles North/Northwest of Donner Lake, near Independence Lake.

Man who brought kidnapped woman to South Lake Tahoe spending 40 years in prison

Muller, a 40-year-old disbarred lawyer from Orangevale who often spent time at his family cabin in the South Lake Tahoe area, was sentenced today to 40 years in prison for the kidnapping Denise Hoskins at the Vallejo home she shared with her boyfriend on March 23, 2015.
Lake Valley Fire kept busy this week with South Shore and Strawberry fires
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/20/2017 - 6:48pmTwo South Shore fires and one near the Strawberry Lodge kept crews from Lake Valley Fire Department (LVFD) busy this week.
On Tuesday about 11:30 a.m., a home on Alice Lake Road in the Montgomery Estates neighborhood suffered smoke damage after a fire started in the garage. The fire started in the garage near the furnace and hot water heater and flames were contained to the garage.
LVFD was assisted by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue.
Jeff DeFranco selected as next LTCC superintendent/president
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/07/2016 - 12:06amJeff DeFranco will become the fifth superintendent/president of Lake Tahoe Community College on February 1, 2016, succeeding Dr. Kindred Murillo who is leaving to take the same position at Southwestern College in Chula Vista.
The LTCC Board of Trustees announced their selection at Tuesday's board meeting. DeFranco is currently the school's vice president of administrative services, a job he has held since 2012.
"This is very surreal," DeFranco said as he addressed the trustees after the announcement. "It's a dream come true."

While the main event starts at 5:00 p.m., children are invited to come by and use their antique World War II phone to make a call to the North pole between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Then, starting at 5:00 p.m., Santa and Mrs. Santa will arrive by sleigh, then everyone can jump on board for free rides.

Approximately 123 Liberty Utilities customers in the North Lake Tahoe area are experiencing an outage due to downed power line across Hwy 89 near Cabin Creek Road.
At this time there is no estimated time of restored power.

Deaths in Lake Tahoe attributed to cold water shock, not hypothermia

Drowning incidents from boating, paddling and swimming often share the same cause, "cold water shock," an involuntary gasp reflex caused by sudden immersion in cold water. Swimmers and boaters suddenly exposed to the cold waters of Lake Tahoe may experience rapid breathing, gasping, fainting, muscle failure and immediate risk of drowning.

Group formed to battle new Vacation Home Rental Ordinance change

Six area meadows tapped to be restored by Forest Service

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) made the announcement today of what is being called the Restoration of Fire Adapted Ecosystems Project.
Fire destroys South Lake Tahoe home
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/22/2016 - 12:46pmA fire destroyed a home in the Bijou neighborhood of South Lake Tahoe on Thursday night, killing three dogs and leaving the two residents without a home which was declared a complete loss.
At 8:22 p.m. April 21, 2016, engines from all area agencies responded to the two-story cabin at 3801 Aspen Avenue after receiving a 911 call of flames coming from inside. South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Douglas and Lake Valley Fire Departments were all called to the scene. They found the home engulfed and items from the interior exploding.

South Lake Tahoe students learn about local history

In the month of October, 220 students from third grade classes in Lake Tahoe Unified School District took field trips to the Lake Tahoe History Museum where they spent a morning with hands on displays, singing and docent led museum tours.
The school tours started in 2010 when Jackie Dumin, the Tallac Site Director for the U.S. Forest Service, developed the program.

Man arrested in South Lake Tahoe indicted on kidnapping charge
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/01/2015 - 9:49pmA federal grand jury returned an indictment today against Matthew D. Muller, a 38-year-old disbarred lawyer from Orangevale, charging him with one count of kidnapping.
Muller is charged with kidnapping physical therapist Denise Hoskins at the Vallejo home she shared with her boyfriend on March 23 and keeping her captive for two days before dropping her off near her mother's house in Huntington Beach. He allegedly demanded a $15,000 ransom.
Teenage son arrested in deaths of his family in El Dorado County

On September 13, Cal Fire asked for the assistance of EDSO after they found human remains inside a burnt residence.
Benicia family missing following El Dorado County fire

Adam Buchanan, his 7-year-old son Gavin and Gavin’s mother Molly McAfee have been reported missing after a fire gutted Buchanan’s cabin near Georgetown in El Dorado County “last weekend,” according to the release.
The actual date of the fire was not immediately available.
The statement was released by the law offices of Gizzi & Reep, LLP in Benicia.

5,000 lightning strikes in Sierra and Reno area; Scattered thunderstorms in forecast
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/02/2015 - 10:03amThere were over 5,000 lightning strikes in the Sierra and Western Nevada on Saturday, many of those causing small fires. Those areas are being monitored. Mendocino County has seven lightning caused fires currently burning and Humboldt county has over 70 fires also caused by lightning.
