"Revenge Porn" gets man one year in prison

A man was found guilty of violating a domestic violence restraining order by a jury in El Dorado County on November 1, 2017.

Daniel Ramirez Rios, 43, violated a domestic violence restraining order and one count of intentionally distributing the images of the intimate body parts of another person – also known as “revenge porn.” Mr. Rios was remanded into custody after the jury’s verdict was announced.

County's DA office strengthens Family Protection Unit

Truckee men arrested on sex with minor charges

An ongoing investigation by the Placer County Sheriff's Office (PCSO), Tahoe Station and the PCSO Special Operations detectives has led two the arrest of two Truckee men on suspicious of having unlawful sexual relations with minors under the age of 16.

Christopher Anthony Renai, 23, was arrested on October 5 near his job in Truckee, and Skyler William Ford, 21, was arrested at his home October 16.

Both remain in custody at the Placer County Jail; Renai's bail is set at $100,000 and Ford's is set at $305,000.

Their next court dates are both set for November 8.

El Dorado County fugitive found on East African island

For nearly five years the El Dorado County District Attorney's office has been searching for Javed Noori, a man who had been placed on the federal government's Northern California Most Wanted List.

That search is now over after Noori was returned to the county on October 9, 2017 where he faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon including two special allegations for inflicting great bodily injury and for a prior strike for very similar conduct.

South Lake Tahoe man charged with burglarizing pizza restaurant

A South Lake Tahoe man has been arrested on charges he allegedly burglarized the Lake Tahoe Pizza Company on October 9, 2017.

At 10:00 a.m., officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to an alarm at the popular restaurant located at 1168 Emerald Bay Road. Upon arrival they learned someone had gained entry through a window and left through a door, and that cash was missing.

Video surveillance showed them a suspect.

Three cited in underage alcohol sting in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Three local employees were cited by a recent decoy operation to catch people selling alcohol to minors.

On September 28, 2017, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, through a grant form the California Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC), conducted the minor decoy operation where minors under their supervision attempted to purchase alcohol from 19 different establishments.

Teen accused of killing family moved out of juvenile system in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been almost two years since Nolen Buchanan of Benicia, California first appeared in a Placerville courtroom as a 16-year-old, charged with the killing of his family in their El Dorado County vacation home and then setting it on fire.

The charred remains of Buchanan's father Adam, 38, his father's fiancée Molly McAffe, 37, and his 8-year-old brother, Gavin, were found in that Greenwood cabin on September 13, 2015.

Since that time, Nolen has been in the Juvenile Treatment Center (JTC) in South Lake Tahoe.

South Tahoe High homecoming activities include parade, football and golf

A week full of South Tahoe High homecoming activities wrap up with a parade through town Friday afternoon, football games Friday night and a golf tournament Saturday.

Watch the class floats with their worldly themes, an entourage of elementary school floats, school buses, the Homecoming Court in convertibles and dump trucks full of class and Viking spirit. They leave the bus garage on Al Tahoe Boulevard at Friday at 3:30 p.m. and proceed down Highway 50 to the high school.

Ty Robben found guilty of 8 felonies; Sentencing in October

The man who has led anti-South Lake Tahoe Police, El Dorado County Sheriff, District Attorney and Judge campaigns was found guilty on Monday in Sacramento Superior Court on eight felony charges.

Man arrested as person of interest in Stateline burglary cases

The man wanted for questioning in a rash of burglaries in the lower Kingsbury and Stateline areas has been arrested.

Peter Quillian was arrested on Sunday, September 24 and is now in custody.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO), Quillian was arrested on a fugitive warrant out of South Lake Tahoe. They said at the time of arrest he allegedly was in possession of a hypodermic needle.

SLTPD: Gunshots, chase and knife lead to arrests of two transients

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department made 53 arrests out of the 540 calls they responded to between September 4-18, 2017.

Washington killer 'person of interest' in 1973 murder near Kyburz

A man serving a life sentence in Washington State for a cold case murder in Seattle is now a “person of interest” in the murder of Susan McLaughlin near Sacramento, California in 1973.

McLaughlin was a University of California Berkeley student who had taken a bus from campus to her parents’ home in El Dorado County, California.

The new leads about the man who might have been responsible for her death – Bryan Lee Gelenaw -- were filed as part of a search warrant in King County Superior Court this week.

Reno man indicted for allegedly using 8,000 PayPal accounts in $3.5M scheme

A Reno man has been indicted on several charges after allegedly engaging in a $3.5 million fraud scheme using over 8,000 fraudulent PayPal credit accounts, bank accounts, and prepaid credit and debit cards he created with stolen identities.

Kenneth Gilbert Gibson, 46, made his initial appearance in federal court on September 14. He was indicted on 10 counts of wire fraud; three counts of mail fraud; 10 counts of bank fraud; six counts of access device fraud; and six counts of aggravated identity theft.

Thieves steal over $110K in construction materials in Washoe County

Suspects are being sought after two construction sites in Washoe County lost over $110,000 in materials during late night burglaries this week.

Detectives from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office are currently investigating two large commercial burglaries that took place between Wednesday night and Friday morning at construction sites in different parts of the county.

Occupancy, density and caps of SLT VHRs topic of long meeting

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are two topics that fills the City Council chambers: Marijuana and Vacation Home Rentals (VHR). Interested residents and other stakeholders in the City's proposed changes to the VHR ordinance not only filled chambers, but filled seats surrounding televisions in the lobby where the proceedings were aired.

After almost six hours of presentation and conversation, the City Council voted to bring back the new ordinance in one month on October 5.

"Our job is to make a decision, not continuing to kick the can down the road," said SLT Mayor Austin Sass.

South Lake Tahoe man sentenced to 56 months in prison

South Lake Tahoe resident Larry Martinez Guzman, aka Larry Guzman-Martinez, 33, was sentenced to 4 years and 8 months in state prison after pleading no contest to the charges of felony driving under the influence causing injury, felony assault, and hit and run.

SLT City Attorney Tom Watson leaving for job in Tracy

Tom Watson gave his resignation to the City Council on Wednesday, August 16, ending his four year stint as South Lake Tahoe's City Attorney.

Watson told South Tahoe Now he has been hired as the City Attorney in Tracy, California, a job that will get him closer to family.

“I am proud of what the City Attorney’s office has accomplished during my time here," said Watson. "I appreciate the Council and Staff’s dedication to this community and want Tahoe to thrive and prosper.”

Water restored to Tahoe Keys Marina

4:30 p.m. update: At 3:35 p.m. Friday afternoon the water was turned back on at the Tahoe Keys Marina. The two parties, Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association and Tahoe Keys Marina Management Inc., were able to work out an arrangement to get things flowing again.

The marina's lawyer Michael Matuska said he will file notice with the court to vacate the August 3 hearing as the two parties will be working on a continued relationship out of court.

Matuska did not release the specifics of the arrangement that restored the water service which has been down since July 11.

Former Truckee resident charged in scheme that took $1.7M from investors

Patrick Slavin, 55, formerly of Truckee, has been accused of being behind an investment scheme that allegedly used at least $1.7 million of investor's money.

Slavin was arraigned in federal court Tuesday on a 21-count indictment charging him with mail and wire fraud for the scheme that he ran from 2008 through 2016, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.

Shakespeare at Lake Tahoe's Sand Harbor entertains with two plays

LAKE TAHOE - The summer of 2017 is the 45th anniversary of the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival at Sand Harbor. If you have never been, this should be the year. Sit in the sand and enjoy not only great productions on the Warren Edward Trepp Stage at water's edge, but also an eclectic food and beverage area (or bring your own).

Two shows will be on the stage, alternating nights, Tuesday-Sunday through August 27.

Boy suspected of starting Auburn fire while smoking marijuana

8:45 p.m. update: A juvenile has been arrested by CalFire law enforcement officers for starting Thursday's fire in Auburn.

The boy told officers that he was smoking marijuana when the nearby brush caught fire. He then called and reported the fire. He was taken into custody by CalFire at the scene and booked at the Placer County Juvenile Hall on arson-related charges.

Judge rules against Tahoe Keys Marina, water to stay off for now

The water at the Tahoe Keys Marina will remain off for the time being after the issue was brought before El Dorado Superior Court for the third time in less than a week on Tuesday, July 18. With the water at the marina turned off, water is also turned off to the Fresh Ketch restaurant as well as apartments and businesses at the marina.

Water at the Tahoe Keys Marina, including that at the Fresh Ketch restaurant and all tenants, remains off after a dispute between the Tahoe Keys Marina and the Tahoe Keys Property Owner's Association (TKPOA).

Lawyers for both parties were in court in South Lake Tahoe both Wednesday and Thursday, and may be back in court again on Tuesday, July 18.

Popular South Lake Tahoe waterfront restaurant closed after water shut off

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An ongoing legal battle between the Tahoe Keys Marina and the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA) has resulted in the water being shut off to all buildings at the marina.

Since the Fresh Ketch restaurant and adjacent deli are in one of those buildings, the El Dorado County Health Department shut them down due to a lack of water. A notice was also put up on the apartments in the complex advising residents of unsafe living conditions since there was no running water.

Couple sought in Carson City, Douglas County fraud investigations

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division are asking for help in locating suspects in multiple fraud investigations.

Brandon Newberg and his wife Mindy Newberg are suspects in multiple fraud cases in Carson City and Douglas County. Their last known address was on the 1300 block of Kimmerling in Douglas County. The Newberg’s may have recently fled to Las Vegas Nevada to avoid law enforcement.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Office looking for Lake Tahoe ski resort burglary suspect

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) is looking for 30-year-old Mark DeForest who is wanted on suspicion of a November, 2016 burglary and grand theft from Sierra-at-Tahoe.

DeForest was arrested at the time and had an initial court date on November 23, 2016. He posted bail but has not been seen since then. A felony warrant is out for his arrest.

According to EDSO Detective Damian Frisby, DeForest has ties to both South Lake Tahoe and Vancouver, Wash. Frisby said nobody has reported seeing DeForest since November.

Law enforcement searching for paroled sex offender in Meyers

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) received a phone call Thursday, alerting them of a convicted sex offender in Meyers who had cut off his ankle monitoring device.

Deputies searched for 25-year-old Alexander Paul Childs in the area but were not successful. Deputies have been on the lookout for him and EDSO has notified surrounding law enforcement agencies as well.

The anonymous caller told EDSO that Childs had called her and said he'd been without his ankle device for about a month and that he wanted to leave Meyers and head to Sacramento.

Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority donates to new TAMBA trails

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority fundraising effort from last month’s Amgen Tour of California raised more than $1,700 for the Tahoe Area Mountain Bike Association toward building new mountain biking and hiking trails. A welcome reception, team presentation and silent auction provided necessary funds toward Phase One construction of the new trail system totaling six miles at Fallen Leaf Lake/Angora Ridge.

This summer TAMBA is working with the U.S. Forest Service to build the initial phase of the eventual 15 miles of new trails. Phase One includes:
