Lake Tahoe gas station owners pay $1M fine, face other sanctions

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After a multi-year investigation into conditions at their Lake Tahoe gas stations, one local businessman is now banned from owning or operating gas stations with underground tanks in California while another faces sanctions.

Azad Amiri and Sarbjit S. Kang were accused of violating multiple underground storage tank (UST) requirements at five Lake Tahoe area gas stations: 1140 Emerald Bay Road, 913 Emerald Bay Road, and 2304 Lake Tahoe Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe, 3208 Highway 50 in Meyers, and 8070 North Lake Blvd., Kings Beach.

South Lake Tahoe trio arrested after alleged kidnapping, domestic violence and drug case

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Three people have been arrested in connection with a domestic violence case out of South Lake Tahoe and a kidnapping case out of Stateline, Nevada that began on Saturday, March 9 in the city limits.

On that date, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) got a report of a domestic violence incident that happened at a motel on the California side of the state line. When officers arrived, they found the 24-year-old victim cleaning

California Supreme Court puts an end to the ''Loop Road' lawsuit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In 2016 a group of citizens gathered enough signatures to put a measure before the voters in November of that year to prevent the City of South Lake Tahoe from taking any action on what has been known as the Loop Road project (though the official name is the US 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project) without first getting approval by the voters.

Today the California Supreme Court put an end to that measure.

South Lake Tahoe man headed to prison for destruction of archaeological sites

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After illegally digging at prehistoric Native American archaeological sites on federal lands in Alpine and El Dorado counties, 50-year-old Timothy Brian Harrison of South Lake Tahoe was sentenced today to one year and one day in prison and ordered to pay $113,000 in restitution.

He was found guilty on two counts of excavation and removal of archaeological resources from public lands and one misdemeanor count of unlawful possession of methamphetamine, U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott announced.

Fire displaces four families from Kingsbury Grade complex

STATELINE, Nev. - Four families are displaced this evening after fire significantly damaged two units of a Kingsbury Grade area fourplex.

On Friday, February 22 at just before 5:00 p.m., crews from Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) responded to a residential structure on Tina Court at the top of Kingsbury Grade. Upon arrival, they found an active fire and called in the East Fork Fire and South Lake Tahoe Fire departments as backup.

All four units were occupied at the time and one person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

City asks public to weigh in on Heavenly Village parking proposal

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There could soon be up to 57 new paid parking spaces around the Heavenly Village to help address the need for parking in the Stateline area of South Lake Tahoe

On Wednesday, South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler presented his proposal to about a dozen people who attended a public meeting at the Marriott Grand Residence.

City-owned paid parking kiosks have been in storage since 2014 when Measure P put an end to the use of paid parking in various areas within the City limits, something approved by City Council in 2012.

El Dorado County Courts closed in South Lake Tahoe due to snow

Due to inclement weather and hazardous road conditions, the El Dorado Superior Court South Lake Tahoe location is closed today, Friday, February 15th. All matters scheduled for today will be heard next Friday, February 22nd for the same scheduled times. If there are any exceptions, parties will be notified.

Column: SLTPD and EDSO saves woman's life with arrest

After a six-month investigation into drug transactions in the Lake Tahoe Basin, the El Dorado Sheriff's Department Narcotics Task Force executed search warrants at two locations in South Lake Tahoe on August 23, 2017. Large amounts of heroin, methamphetamine and approximately 12 firearms were seized in the search. Lynwood Towle, Shawn German, Melissa Griffis, Paul Ryan, and Krystal Long were all arrested, charged, and eventually pleaded guilty to various charges stemming from those searches.

Man who led officer and K9 on chase through snow sentenced to 4 years in prison

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. Dylan Matthew Pettigrew was recently sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of First Degree Burglary.

South Lake Tahoe man spending year in jail after making criminal threats against his mother

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Wilbert Christopher Holt pleaded guilty in the South Lake Tahoe Superior Court on January 28, 2019, to Criminal Threats with a Deadly Weapon.

A month prior, Holt was highly intoxicated when he threatened his mother with a knife. He held a knife in his hand in the open position and told his mother he would "cut her." He then warned her not to call the police.

Paid parking proposal for Stateline area: Public meeting next week

During last week's City Council meeting, Police Chief Brian Uhler made a presentation with his ideas for adding 57 new parking spots around the village utilizing the surplus kiosks the city has on hand.

El Dorado County Superior Court to be closed Tuesday due to snow

UPDATE - The courts in Placerville are on a delayed start Tuesday, opening at 11:00 a.m. The Cameron Park Court will have regular hours.

El Dorado County courts in South Lake Tahoe will be closed completely on Tuesday, February 5. Depending on the weather, the court facilities on the West Slope may also close, or have a delayed start.

Court users need to check the court’s website after 8:00 a.m. Tuesday for information about those operations - http://www.eldoradocourt.org/.

Court on a delayed start; City of South Lake Tahoe offices open

The El Dorado County Superior Court is on a delayed start today, Monday, February 4. They will start at 10:00 a.m. They will probably close early so that staff and court users can get home safely.

The City of South Lake Tahoe offices will be open but the Recreation and Swim Complex will be closed all day today due to inclement weather and predicted dangerous blizzard conditions throughout the day.

All three local branches of El Dorado Savings will close at 2:00 p.m.

If any other businesses inform us they have different hours than normal today they will be posted on this story.

El Dorado County murder suspect arrested in Washington

A man with ties to South Lake Tahoe has been arrested in connection with the murder of 60-year-old Helen McKinney.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) announced Sunday that 26-year-old Tanner Michael Seals is in the Adams County Jail in Washington State after being arrested on an out-of-state warrant on January 31. He was interviewed by EDSO detectives and will be extradited to El Dorado County and charged with murder.

Letter: Agencies alert public on what they're doing to alleviate traffic leaving South Lake Tahoe

The following is a letter created by the four agencies currently working together to try and find a solution to the traffic problem in Meyers as visitors exit Lake Tahoe after a weekend. A public meeting was held on Friday night and that story will be carried on Saturday.

Murder charges filed against Martinez-Guzman; Timeline of crimes revealed

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Murder suspect Wilbur Ernesto Martinez-Guzman will be tried jointly in Reno, Nevada by both the Douglas County and Washoe County district attorneys in what could be a landmark case.

During a joint press conference Monday, the DAs from both counties outlined their case against Martinez-Guzam for the murders of Connie Koontz, Sophia Renken, Gerald David and Sharon David.

City of South Lake Tahoe and owners group reach agreement on Measure T lawsuit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City and the South Lake Tahoe Property Owner's Group have reached an agreement on the enforcement of Measure T, a voter-initiated ballot measure to remove over 1,300 vacation home rentals from neighborhoods by the year 2021.

There were two major portions of the measure though that were to go into effect immediately, a change to occupancy rates and a halt to the issuing of new permits for the vacation accommodations made popular by websites like Airbnb.

Murder suspect allegedly sold property of victims at Carson City pawn shops

The 19-year-old man arrested in connection with the murder of two Gardnerville woman and an elderly Reno couple earlier this month had allegedly pawned several items stolen from the victims at Carson City pawn shops, according to a criminal complaint filed in Carson City Justice Court.

Suspect in all four Northern Nevada murders in custody

UPDATE 1/23/19 - The suspect in the quadruple murder in Northern Nevada was in the country illegally from El Salvador when he was arrested on January 19, 2019. Tips received by law enforcement led them to Wilbur Ernesto Martinez-Guzman, and as they built a murder case they started to tail him. Immigration officials were unaware of Martinez-Guzman until those tips came in.

Officials did not want to lose the suspect and arrested him on immigration charges as the investigation continued and the murder case developed.

Schools open around Lake Tahoe on Friday

Friday, January 18, 2019 - Lake Tahoe Unified School District, Truckee Tahoe Unified School District and Washoe County schools at Incline Village are open today.

Douglas County Schools are open with the following instructions for busses at the lake:

School busses will stop at main bus stops only for Lake school Zephyr Cove Elementary (ZCES). These stops are designated as:

The corner of Tina Court and Ski Court for students living in the Tramway and Kingsbury Village area:

ZCES - Bus will arrive at 7:57 a.m. and depart at 8:20 a.m.

Office and business closures in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All El Dorado County facilities in South Lake Tahoe are closed for Thursday, January 17 due to inclement weather. This includes the South Lake Tahoe Library.

Due to a blizzard warning and high winds, both Snowmobile Tours and MS Dixie II Sightseeing Cruise has been cancelled for today.

Tahoe Toys & Treasures is closed.

El Dorado County office of Education is closed, which is a county office, but most know it as Head Start and Early Head Start.

Volunteers for Bread & Broth 4 Kids: Food bags will be packed on Friday morning at 8:45 instead of Thursday.

Schools on the South Shore open; Douglas County on 90 minute delay

All schools in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (South Lake Tahoe) will be open on Wednesday, January 16 but there are some program cancellations - All after[school AAA programs are cancelled, STHS cross country practice going to Kirkwood cancelled as are the high school alpine practices at Sierra-at-Tahoe.

Up at the North Shore, Truckee Tahoe School District schools are closed. All school activities are cancelled unless notified otherwise.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During their closed session meeting Monday, the South Lake Tahoe City Council expressed interest in working together will all the stakeholders involved in the Vacation Home Rental (VHR) battle to come up with a compromise.

El Dorado County's newly-elected officials sworn in

Two El Dorado County Supervisors and eight other elected officials were sworn into office on Monday, January 7 during a ceremony in the Board of Supervisors meeting room in Placerville.

El Dorado County Superior Court Presiding Judge Suzanne N. Kingsbury administered the oath.

Board of Supervisors who took the oath of office were Lori Parlin, who was elected to represent District 4, and Sue Novasel, who was re-elected to represent District 5. It was a historic moment since, for the first time in El Dorado County the majority of the Board of Supervisors is comprised of women

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A special closed session meeting has been called for City Council on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at 8:30 a.m. There are two agenda items, both involving conferences with legal counsel.

Ceremony, street closures part of Monday inauguration at State Capitol in Carson City

Nevada's 30th governor will take office on Monday, Jan. 7 at an inauguration ceremony held in front of the State Capitol in Carson City.

Stephen F. Sisolak, Nevada's first Democratic governor in two decades, was elected on Nov. 6, 2018. He will take the oath of office on the front steps of the Capitol Monday at 11:30 a.m., according to his inauguration web site.

Capitol grounds will open prior to the ceremony at 10:30 a.m. and a public reception will follow at the Nevada State Library and Archives located on the northeast corner of the Capitol complex.

Public memorial for Judge Terrence Finney in South Lake Tahoe Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A public memorial for the first superior court judge in the community, the Honorable Terrence M. Finney, will be held on Friday, January 4, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Department 3 of the South Lake Tahoe courthouse.

Finney passed away on November 7, 2018 at the age of 84.

Monsignor Murrough Wallace facing accusations of sexual abuse

Monsignor Murrough Wallace, who served the South Lake Tahoe community at the St. Theresa Parish from 1993 to 2003, has been accused by a man who said Wallace and another priest sexually abused him in 1985 when he was 17.

The accuser, known as John Doe in court documents, said he was volunteering at Camp Pendola when the alleged abuse took place.

Due to the allegations, Wallace, who is now 82 and retired, had to withdraw from ministry until more facts could be gathered, according to Bishop Soto of the Sacramento Diocese.

Judge halts ban on South Lake Tahoe vacation rentals, for now

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though there is no ban on vacation rentals until 2021 in South Lake Tahoe, a component to control occupancy was to be in effect this month but a judge today put a halt to that.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Property Owners Group has a court date Monday, December 24 to try and get a temporary restraining order against the City of South Lake Tahoe's implementation of Measure T.

Scammers attempt to get money from South Lake Tahoe business owner

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A scammer attempted to get money out of a South Lake Tahoe business owner on Thursday, December 20 by pretending to be from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).

The call came into the business from what looked like the police department's main phone line. The person on the other end told the owner he owed money on old credit cards and would be arrested if he didn’t pay up. The caller gave him a number to call, 512-333-2304, and when he called they asked for $1985.

He hung up and called police.

DEA arrests two South Lake Tahoe residents on drug charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Federal agents were in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday to arrest two local men after a three-year-long investigation into their illegal drug activities.

On December 18, 2018, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) with assistance from the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Task Force (TRIDENT), South Lake Tahoe Police Department and El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office served a federal search warrant at a home on the 2300 block of Tahoe Vista Drive.

Lawsuit filed against City of South Lake Tahoe to stop enforcement of Measure T

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It has been just two weeks since the final count of the November 2018 election was certified in El Dorado County and there is already a lawsuit surrounding the outcome of Measure T.

Cannabis ordinance may be in place in South Lake Tahoe by March 2019

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The new city council had to tackle the big issue of a cannabis ordinance during their first meeting together on Tuesday, an issue that had been before the previous council numerous times. Two versions of an ordinance were presented but neither passed muster in the eyes of the council and they hope to have one that addresses their issues come before them at their January 15, 2019 meeting.

South Lake Tahoe pair off to prison after abusing their two young children

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Danielle McGlothin and Lance Logan are heading to state prison after being sentenced for abusing their two young children, ages one and three.

On October 19, 2017, staff at the 3 Peaks Resort in South Lake Tahoe discovered two small children without clothes on, roaming the parking lot unattended. Staff attempted to return the boys to their parents after the kids were almost hit by a car. The parents, McGlothin and Logan, appeared to the staff to be under the influence of drugs and police were called.

National Day of Mourning - Post office and federal offices closed

It is not very often there is a National Day of Mourning. President Trump has called for one on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 and his executive order will close the federal government to honor the late President George H.W. Bush who held the country's highest position from 1989-1993.

There will be a state funeral for the 41st president held at the National Cathedral in Washington starting at 8:00 a.m. PST. After the ceremony, his body will be moved to Texas, where he will be buried at his presidential library.

Bush died on Friday at the age of 94.
