Rocky Point neighborhood meeting on proposed US50 project

Jennifer Susanne Scott Fox ~ 1980 - 2019

Jennifer (Jenny) Susanne Scott Fox came into this world at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe, California on November 8, 1980, and passed away at the age of 38 August 9, 2019.

Remembering Carson Valley in the 1950s and 1960s at Dangberg Historic Park

On Saturday, September 28, at 10:00 am, the final event of the 2019 Festival season features members of the 1962 graduating class of Douglas High School sharing their memories of Carson Valley in the 1950s and 1960s.

Carson Valley has always been a unique, close-knit community. Of the original thirty-five graduating students, twenty-one are still living, many of whom have remained in Carson Valley.

Graduates of the Douglas High School Class of 1962 continue to meet regularly, explaining that they are good friends who enjoy reminiscing.

Annual Firefest returns to Lake Tahoe

Emily's Walk for Hope brings awareness to those lost to suicide

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The third annual Awareness Walk: Emily's Walk for Hope will take place on Saturday, September 21 at Lake Tahoe Community College. The Suicide Prevention Network invites the community to participate in a walk that focuses on remembering those lost to suicide and to help end the stigma surrounding suicide.

Emily’s Walk for Hope was founded in 2017 by longtime local, Susan Alessi. Susan is the mother of Emily Ann Alessi, born and raised in South Lake Tahoe who died by suicide in 2014.

Hiram Daniel Scott was a ship builder from Pittston, Maine by trade. Initially he settled in Santa Cruz, California in 1847, then followed the Gold Rush when gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill. There he operated a ferry business across the San Joaquin River.

Edgewood Tahoe gives $60,000 to South Lake Tahoe nonprofits

STATELINE, Nev. - During the 2019 American Century Golf Championship, Edgewood Tahoe teamed up with three South Lake Tahoe are nonprofits teamed in providing food to the over 60,000 attendees to the tournament. The three groups volunteered their time in staffing food tents for the popular July 9-14 event, and, as a thank you, Edgewood Tahoe presented each with a $20,000 check.

On August 27, 2019, Edgewood honored Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation, Lake Tahoe Community College, and Rotary Club of Tahoe-Douglas in an intimate ceremony where the groups received their checks.

Moose Lodge raises $14,000 for South Lake Tahoe Cancer League during Longest Day of Golf

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - From sunup to sundown, golfers recently hit the links at Tahoe Paradise Golf Course to raise funds for the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League. Sponsored by the Moose Lodge of South Lake Tahoe for 14 years, the Longest Day of Golf raised $14,000 to go to help local cancer patients.

On Friday a check was presented by tournament organizer Mary Luckel to the Cancer League during a barbeque at the Moose Lodge. The men and women of the Moose Lodge, the golf course and many local businesses helped the league during their Longest Day of Golf.

Review: Love Without Mercy, Sans Merci is another knockout from local Black Ice Theatre Company

There is theater, there is poetry, and then there is Sans Merci. There is sequence about one hour into the play Sans Merci, playing at the Duke Theater at Lake Tahoe Community College, that breathlessly and perfectly encapsulates the beauty of live theater, and it does so in shear silence. It is easy for a play to make you cry with dramatic dialogue. I have never had a play break me down to my core without a single word uttered on stage for several minutes as happens in Sans Merci.

6th annual adult prom, Bubbles & Bowties

Normally held in October, organizers of Bubbles & Bowties decided to move the popular event for two reasons: Problems with their original venue and a desire to not do a fundraiser near any others in town.

Barton Foundation awards $50,000 to groups focused on community's health needs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Fifteen local health programs offered by nonprofits and agencies in the South Lake Tahoe area have been awarded grants by the Barton Foundation. A total of $50,000 was distributed among the groups to aid in their efforts to address the community’s most pressing health issues.

During the 2018 Barton Community Health Needs Assessment, the top health issues identified in the South Lake Tahoe community were access to care, mental health, and substance abuse.

The event will consist of a series of informational stations where residents can give input on the planning stages of this transformational project. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) are seeking comments as different options for the design of the corridor come into focus.

Thousands of Burners head through Reno-Tahoe International Airport on way to Black Rock Desert

The Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) was a very busy place Monday as most of the 20,000 people expected to fly in for Burning Man 2019 passed through on their way to the Black Rock Desert.

Attendees to the annual event (known as Burners) were greeted at the airport RNO's therapy dogs, Paws for Passengers, who wore costumes for the day to bring smiles to arriving Burners.

Welcome activities are taking place all week at Air Playa Info, a welcome area staffed by local volunteers dedicated to assisting Burners.

2nd annual Reef's Run for Hydrocephalus Awareness returns to Lake Tahoe

$100K from 30th annual American Century Championship to be given to local nonprofits

STATELINE, Nev. - The 30th annual American Century Championship has gone into the record books as one of the biggest and best golf events in Lake Tahoe history. There was an attendance record of 60,550, an economic impact estimated at $30 million for the Lake Tahoe Basin, and now an additional $100,000 will be given away to South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Township non-profits.

Two-year SnowGlobe contract signed; New location to be identified by 2021

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The popular outdoor music festival SnowGlobe will be returning to South Lake Tahoe for at least 2019 after a new two-year contract was received by the City this week. MTV/Viacom, owners of the festival, has signed the contract approved by City Council during their June 18, 2019 meeting.

Organizers originally asked for a ten-year contract starting with their ninth annual event in 2019.

20th annual Markleeville Creek Day during Great Sierra River Cleanup

Marlin Joseph "Hersh" Herschman ~ 1943 - 2019

Hersh Herschman was never a certified tennis professional, but many of those who he instructed would say otherwise.

Born Marlin Joseph Herschman on Jan. 12, 1943, in St. Ignatius, Montana, he would always be best known as Hersh or The Hersh Man. He died Aug. 7, 2019, at The Chateau at Gardnerville in Nevada of inoperable brain cancer. His wife, Sheryl, and best friend for more than 40 years Greg Painter were with him. He was 76.

After graduating from St. Ignatius High School in Montana in 1961, Hersh joined the U.S. Army for two years. He spent two summers at West Point.

Community raises over $1,000 for SOS Outreach at Tahoe Chamber event

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – A recent Tahoe Chamber Connect for a Cause raised funds for SOS Outreach, a youth development non-profit that uses year-round, outdoor sports to engage underserved students in long-term mentor based relationships.

They gathered with community members at Revive Coffee & Wine and enjoyed appetizers, local beer and wine, raffle prizes, and live music from Bond Collins while raising $1,050 for SOS Outreach.

Basecamp Pizza raises $17,250 for Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A year-long fundraising effort by the staff and management at Basecamp Pizza has netted $17,250 for the Lake Tahoe Education Foundation (LTEF).

On Monday, August 12, the popular restaurants in the Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe presented members of LTEF with a check.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless is proud to announce that the Tahoe Beach Bash was a huge success! We would like to extend a special thank you to The Beach Retreat and Lodge at Tahoe for their generosity in allowing us to host the Tahoe Beach Bash in their incredible lake-front outdoor space. The turnout for this event surpassed our expectations and we were able to raise much-needed funds to help us run our programs including the operation of the Warm Room and other outreach services on the South Shore.

The Juvenile Service Council (JSC) of El Dorado County is a 501c3 all-volunteer organization serving at-risk youth ages 14-18 who are involved in the Juvenile Justice system. Often these young people are some of our community’s most vulnerable and underserved. They are at a time in their lives when they need our “village” to be there for them without judgment, with kindness and compassion, and with the resources to be able to provide them the tools to be able to forge the future successfully.

New fire preparedness tools unveiled by the City of South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be another fire in California, but when and where cannot be predicted and is unknown - but what is known is there will be another community that is devastated by wildland fire.

Residents around Lake Tahoe and the Sierra know this all too well and have been talking about concerns of wildfire threats in and around the Tahoe Basin. Those conversations have turned into plans and the City of South Lake Tahoe has just released an interactive website to help both residents and visitors map out an evacuation plan based on their neighborhood.

Live Violence Free has announced their next fundraiser, An Afternoon of Peace & Harmony, that will be held at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys on Saturday, September 7, 2019 from 04:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Kudos: Community supports growing tennis program

A record 246 people participated in the 36th Tahoe Tennis Classic at Zephyr Cove Park this past weekend. The four-day annual event brought people from throughout the United States to our area for competitive and fun tennis.

The tournament is the biggest fundraiser for the Zephyr Cove Tennis Club Foundation. The nonprofit, all-volunteer organization has a contract with Douglas County to operate the six courts. Responsibilities include resurfacing the courts, managing play, and providing instruction for all ages and abilities.

Guest Speakers and Mo'z Motley Blues at Dangberg Historic Park

The month of August begins with a presentation on “The Great State Embezzlement”, Mo’z Motley Blues in concert and a presentation on “The History of Baseball in Nevada” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.

On Sunday, August 4, at 10:00 am, Glen Whorton, President of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society, returns to the park to speak on this year’s topic “The Great State Embezzlement”. This is a free event for all to attend.
