Road Trip: Manzanar National Historic Site

I’ve done that route many times myself on the way to and from San Diego and Disneyland. As heading South, the Owens Valley opens up after leaving the town of Bishop, just over 200 miles from Tahoe. You’ll pass through the town of Independence, and six miles later you’ll find yourself at the Manzanar National Historic Site (the town has an ironic name as you’re about to find out).
Truckee River set for restoration; Now in public comment period
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/28/2014 - 7:02pmSeveral areas of the Truckee River near Tahoe City are set for restoration because of erosion and degraded water quality caused by river users.
Years of people accessing the river and paved trail from Highway 89 pullouts has created the need for about 900 feet of stream bank and wet meadow restoration. This project will include reshaping the river bank through placement of woody material and boulders.
SLTPD adds DUI saturation patrols over holiday weekend

As Americans prepare for travel and festivities with family and friends, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wants to remind all drivers that it’s dangerous to drive after drinking. You have to choose your role before drinking begins: will you drink or will you drive? Remember, even if you only have a little bit to drink and think you’re “okay to drive,” you could still be over the legal limit, because Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving.
Third annual "Light Up South Lake Tahoe" and community tree lighting

What is becoming a new holiday tradition on the South Shore will be making its way through town on Saturday, December 6.
"Light Up South Lake Tahoe" is a procession through town of lit up city vehicles including a fire truck, police armoured vehicle and city works snow plow. The idea is, as the procession passes by each business they are to turn on their holiday lights.
Public coming up with ideas on the Loop Road/Hwy 50 Revitalization Project
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/24/2014 - 10:05pmDuring last week's Loop Road open house, residents and businesspeople gave their input on what they felt the US Highway 50/South Shore Community Revitalization project should offer.
Results show that 82% of the people participating believe the most important goal is to beautify the corridor and create gathering spaces for locals and visitors.
Another 67% of the respondents believe there should be efforts to reduce traffic congestion and improve mobility options, 60% said the project should revitalize the area and boost economic development.

CHP Senior Volunteer Program looking for participants
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/21/2014 - 10:19pmThe California Highway Patrol office in South Lake Tahoe is looking for local senior citizens to take part in their Senior Volunteer Program.
Those that participate will provide a myriad of services for the CHP including deployment of the radar trailer, working with local schools, assisting the office, teaching driver safety to other seniors and participate in ride-a-longs with officers.
There are a few requirements.
1. Be over 55
2. Undergo a background investigation
3. No felony convictions
4. Be of good moral character
5. Be available to volunteer during office hours

Originally scheduled to continue through next summer, the project has substantially completed this week; one season ahead of the original schedule. Completing this important project ahead of schedule could not have been accomplished without the understanding of the entire community.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/17/2014 - 8:49pmA domestic argument in South Lake Tahoe Monday night lead to a woman getting into her car, driving over large boulders, through a building and coming to rest against a tree.
South Lake Tahoe Police, Fire, Paramedics and El Dorado County Sheriffs responded to a 911 call reporting that a car went through the local Jack in the Box. When responders arrived they found a car partially inside a building on the corner of Sussex and Brockway Avenues, across the street from the restaurant.

NHP: Click It or Ticket campaign to be enforced on local roads

The Nevada Highway Patrol has launched a multi-county "Click it or Ticket" campaign to educate drivers on the importance of using seat belts.
In Nevada, between 2007 and 2011, 441 unbelted vehicle occupants lost their lives and 1,197 were seriously injured in traffic crashes on our roadways
State Route 28 in Lake Tahoe to receive $12.5 million in improvements

The Washoe County Commissioners approved a Federal Lands Access Program Memorandum of Agreement for federal funding for the design and construction of the improvements.

South Tahoe Middle School Connectivity Plan Workshop

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) was awarded over $150,000 to look into providing safer, more walkable and bikeable off highway routes around South Tahoe Middle School (STMS), Bijou Park and Lake Tahoe Community College. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) awarded the grant as part of their $500,000 "On Our Way" program grants.
Another public workshop to get feedback from the community will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the STMS Multi-purpose room.

City to hold ribbon cutting ceremony for Harrison Avenue Streetscape Project

Harrison Avenue has been transformed and the City of South Lake Tahoe is going to recognize its success with a ribbon cutting ceremony on November 13.
The improvements along Harrison Avenue have given the Al Tahoe neighborhood and Highway 50 a whole new look, welcoming those walking and biking through as well as those driving by.
Celebrate with the city at the noon cutting ceremony in the new parking lot adjacent to the Tahoe Daily Tribune office on Harrison Avenue.
This event is open to everyone.

Community update meeting on the South Shore Community Vitalization Project

Known as the "Loop Road," the U.S. 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project is about two months away from having its environmental analysis completed. Expecting that completion in January, 2015, the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) is holding a community meeting will update people on the plan to realign traffic through the casino corridor.
Planners are working on a concept with a more walkable, bikeable and transit friendly "main street" from Pioneer Trail's intersection with Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe to the loop road to the east side of MontBleu.

Growth, to put it in one word.
On one side you have people who want to have control of growth in the county and not let it go to Sacramento. On the other side there is a grass roots movement to keep all growth out of the county unless Cal Trans says its okay.

South Lake Tahoe Woman Faces Slew of Charges after Hit and Run
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/14/2014 - 5:44pmA 22-year-old South Lake Tahoe woman remains jailed Tuesday evening on charges of hit and run, resisting, DUI and assault with a deadly weapon. Alejandra Lopez was driving westbound on Highway 50 in the vicinity of South Tahoe Middle School at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday morning when the series of events occurred that landed her in a cell at El Dorado County Jail. Lopez is accused of splitting the two westbound lanes with her car, hitting the cars in each lane. The drivers of the two cars which were hit got of their vehicles after the accident when Lopez tried to run one of them over.

December 13, 2014 - 3:00pm Would you like to take part in the 3rd Annual Holiday Parade in South Lake Tahoe? Entries are now being accepted for this fun event which will take place on Saturday, December 13 at 3 p.m.
The parade route will begin at Ski Run Blvd and make it's way down Highway 50 to the Y.
All profits will go to the local food pantry, Christmas Cheer, who feeds approximately 1,000 families a month.
Families and businesses are welcome to participate for a fee of $50 per entry. Scout and school groups can participate for free though registration is still required.

Single car accident at Stateline claims the life of an Oregon man

NHP Troopers responded to the 8 a.m. rollover accident near Kahle Drive. Crash investigations show that 71-year-old Larry Dean Wells was driving a blue Hyundai eastbound on U.S. Highway 50 when the car left the roadway, struck a tree and rolled over.

King Fire, Dog Fire and Applegate Fire updates
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/09/2014 - 9:18pmHighway 80 has been reopened to four lanes this evening as firefighters continue to fight the Applegate Fire which had caused three lanes to be closed since Wednesday.
It is still unknown how the fire started but it has been listed as suspicious in nature. The fire has burned 420 acres as of Thursday evening and is now 25% contained. Firefighters worked in steep and rugged terrain to get the containment line in place. There are 1,419 personnel on the scene with air tanker support from the U.S. Forest Service.
Pilot dies in air tanker crash while fighting new Yosemite Fire
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/07/2014 - 10:21pmHighway 140 is closed through Yosemite tonight as firefighters are battling a new fire in the National Park. The Dog Fire began on Tuesday afternoon at 2:45 p.m.
Tragedy struck early in this fire when a Cal Fire pilot fighting the fire with an air tanker crashed and died. The family of the pilot has asked that identification be withheld until they could get a hold of all family members.
The tanker that crashed was an S-2T, one of several aircraft that Cal Fire deploys to battle wildfires.

In the middle, like some scar or deformity, lies a jagged expanse of civilization, garish polychromatic swaths of development blending into one another with only jutting casino high-rises and the slash of Highway 50 serving as compass points.

This may seem like a drastic statement and I want to explain it. I'm not talking about guns or metal clubs, I'm talking about cars.
Have you ever waited at the intersection of Highway 50 and Sierra Blvd? How many times has someone rushed into the intersection against a red light as you were moving with your green light?
Douglas County seeks Community Block Grant applicants

People are now able to apply for the Community Development Block Grant program in Douglas County. The public is invited to provide ideas, comments and potential projects.
Wild horse and motorcyclist both die after Silver Springs collision
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/02/2014 - 9:35pmAn unidentified man was killed Wednesday night after his Harley Davidson motorcycle collided with a wild horse on US 50 in Silver Springs, NV. The horse had to be put down after the accident.
At approximately 8:25 p.m., the motorcyclist was traveling westbound when he hit the horse, causing him to be ejected from his bike and thrown into the eastbound travel lane. The drivers of three passenger vehicles traveling eastbound did not see the accident or the man in the roadway and were unable to avoid running over him.
Annual Festival in honor of the Kokanee Salmon this weekend
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/01/2014 - 10:26pmLast year, a government shut down caused the annual South Lake Tahoe festival that honors the Kokanee Salmon to be canceled, though nobody told the fish. Highway 89 was lined with cars since people had to walk in to view the fish spawning as well as enjoying fall foliage.
Reno's Street Vibrations see large crowds and fewer accidents
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/01/2014 - 8:25pmThe Nevada Highway Patrol is reporting a significant increase in highway traffic over the 4-day Street Vibrations event held this past weekend. While there were more bikes on the road, NHP reports only one injury accident that involved a motorcycle and two DUI arrests for motorcyclists, one in Carson City and Lyon County.
The NHP says there were expecting an increase in accidents along the highways around Reno and Lake Tahoe with an estimated 50,000 to 100,000 Street Vibration participants in town.
Matthews family Loses Home in King Fire, Son Still Missing

The 20 acre Cascade Fire in South Lake Tahoe now 90% contained
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/24/2014 - 8:38pm9/29/14 update: Heavy precipitation over the weekend allowed firefighters to achieve 90 percent containment of the Cascade Fire near Snow Lake in the Desolation Wilderness. Crews will begin repairing impacts from fire suppression activities and will monitor the fire to detect any renewed activity later this week due to drier, warmer and windier conditions.
Bayview Trailhead and Campground and TaylorCreek Sno-Park on Hwy. 89 have reopened. The cause of the 20-acre fire is under investigation, but it has been determined to be human-caused.
NHP prepares for bikers in the area for Street Vibrations

The primary events will be located in Reno and Sparks but other events are scheduled in Carson City, Virginia City and Lake Tahoe. Organizers are expecting between 50,000 and 100,000 participants and with the influx of visitors to the area, the number of traffic related issues are expected to increase.

South Lake Tahoe landmark business to close after 73 years

South Lake Tahoe's Recreation Complex now set up a a Red Cross Evacuation Center
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/19/2014 - 9:50amThe recreation center in South Lake Tahoe is now an American Red Cross evacuation center.
Last night at 8 p.m., City officials were informed that the town of Kyburz might need to go into an evacuation advisory situation, and with Highway 50 closed at the time residents wouldn't have been able to go the evacuation centers to the west.
The Red Cross staff is manning their station at the Recreation Complex 24/7 until the need is passed.
The Tahoe Fund raises $750,000 in donations to start Incline Village to Sand Harbor Bike Path
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/14/2014 - 8:14pmThe Lake Tahoe Bikeway which will one day go around the lake got one step closer with the news that funding is now in place for a scenic section on the North Shore. The Incline Village to Sand Harbor bike path will be started next spring due to garnering enough donations from private investors.
The Tahoe Fund announced they have received $750,000 in donations that will trigger more than 12 million dollars in public funds from federal, state and local governments.
Road work continues in South Lake Tahoe this week
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/14/2014 - 7:51pmSouth Lake Tahoe motorists can expect one-way traffic control this week, from Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Highway 50 from Airport Road to F Street. This stretch of road is getting erosion control and paving done.
This is part of a $12.1 million water-quality and roadway improvement project from the "Y" intersection of Highways 50 and 89 to the South Lake Tahoe Airport adding curb and gutter, sidewalks, new drainage systems and repaving the highway.
Completion is expected this fall.
Firefighters have put a line around 89% of the King Fire
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/14/2014 - 2:43pm9/28/14 10:00 p.m. update: 4,420 firefighters and support staff are still on the scene of the 97.099 acre King Fire which is now 89% contained.
After 4 days of precipitation with accumulations of 1-3 inches, fire spread has been halted, however heat remains in the heavier fuels and in the heavy duff sheltered from the rain under the dense timber canopy. As the weather turns warm and dry over the next several days, expect to see an increase in fire activity and smoke production; however spread potential is extremely low, doe to the successful suppression efforts.
Workers strike gas line at site of new Hard Rock Casino
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/11/2014 - 2:40pmA 4" gas line was stuck by construction crews Thursday morning at the site of the new Hard Rock Casino. Several emergency vehicles responded, lining the street, bringing concern by people passing through the casino corridor at approximately 9:30 a.m.
Tahoe-Douglas Fire Department and the The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to the old Horizon Casino. Fire personnel ordered the evacuation of the 55 construction and staff workers and the closure of Highway 50.
Ceremony to be held for completion of South Lake Tahoe Bike Trail rehabilitation project

Bike trails in South Lake Tahoe received rehabilitation this summer with $250,000 of funds from Measure R. Trails inside city limits received new paving and are open and ready to ride. Planned restoration of the trails over bridges at Trout Creek and Upper Truckee Meadow are not completed yet and expected to be done this fall.
