A 12-year-old boy wearing headphones and riding a bicycle without a helmet was hurt in a collision on Thursday, South Lake Tahoe police report. The accident happened at the intersection of Lyons Avenue and Highway 50 when the boy attempted to cross against a red traffic signal.

Annual Lake Tahoe charity fishing derby, raffle and brunch on Sunday

Competition is on Lake Tahoe from one hour before sunrise to "High Noon" Sunday, June 3.
Prize money is awarded to anglers who reel in the largest Mackinaw $1,000, $500 Brown Trout, and $250 Rainbow Trout.
$50 entry fee includes Derby Entry, T-shirt, a wonderful Buffet Brunch (11:30 a.m. -1:00 p.m.), and Raffle.
Proceeds to benefit community charities through the Tahoe City Rotary Club Foundation.
Pre-register in Tahoe City at Jake's On The Lake or Pete 'N Peters tavern by 5pm Saturday, June 2nd.

South Lake Tahoe Certified Farmers' Market begins June 5

This year's crop of organic produce will find its way to South Lake Tahoe beginning June 5 and extend throughout summer at the American Legion Hall parking lot and Fridays starting June 22 on Ski Run Boulevard.
The Certified Farmers' Market will run from 8 a.m to 1 p.m. each Tuesday through Oct. 9 at the American Legion Hall parking lot. Produce is picked within hours of market days and visitor can talk directly to the farmer and learn about new varieties of fruits and vegetables and farming practices.


Western Days Meets the Wagon Train

Western Days Meets the Wagon Train at Lakeview Commons, 11 am to 2 p.m. Wagon Train will pull over for photo opportunities, Western Days will greet the Wagon Train with low cost pony rides for the kids provided by Borges ponies, and vendors with various offerings. South Lake Tahoe to remember fallen soldiers on Memorial Day

A Memorial Day service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Happy Homestead Cemetery, 1261 Johnson Blvd., in South Lake Tahoe. The service will recognize veterans past and present and will be followed by cake and coffee at American Legion Post 795, 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has released the draft Decision Memo for 2012 Capital Improvement Projects at Heavenly Mountain Resort. Improvements would include trail upgrades, a new surface tow lift, a new Kids Adventure Zone, an outdoor event facility, summer four-wheel drive tours and a new summer hiking trail. These projects are consistent with the improvements identified in Heavenly's Master Plan Amendment and are intended to improve the overall quality of the visitor experience.

Mom Finds Meteorite Worth About $20,000

People from all over the world are in the tiny town of Lotus in El Dorado County looking for something that’s out of this world, but leave it to a stay-at-home mom walking her dog to find a precious meteorite.
Meteorites landed in California’s Gold Country several days ago, creating a modern day gold rush.
The rock Brenda Salveson found is 17 grams, equal to just over a tablespoon of sugar. But when it comes in the form of an asteroid, its weight has no boundaries.
“I was lucky, blessed, good karma,” Brenda said. “It was sitting there at my toes like an Easter egg.”

Sierra-at-Tahoe extends season through April 22; Customer Appreciation Day on April 23

Thanks to Mother Nature’s late-season generosity, Sierra-at-Tahoe will extend its season and remain open with full operations every day through Sunday, April 22. Customer Appreciation Day is on Monday, April 23.
Skiers and riders of all ages can purchase a lift ticket for $20 on April 23. All of the proceeds raised from the day’s lift ticket sales will be donated to sponsor youth recreation and education including youth baseball, soccer, swimming, and other youth activities.

On April 6-7, firefighters seen on South Lake Tahoe streets may not be responding to a fire or other emergency. Off-duty firefighters from South Lake Tahoe Fire Department will be shaking their turnout boots and collecting donations to help “Fill the Boot for Burns.” This event on Friday at the Safeway on Johnson Boulevard and Saturday Intersection of Lake Take Boulevard and Park Street will raise money to support burn prevention and recovery programs in Northern and Central California.

Plenty of snow at Lake Tahoe for spring skiing, snowboarding

It's been a weird ski and riding season, for sure. One indication is that Heavenly Mountain Resort is only operating the Boulder base lodge and the Boulder and North Bowl lifts on weekends. In all the years I taught at Boulder never has had a shutdown like this. Too bad because lots of locals liked Boulder as out-of-towners didn't go there very often. Thus, parking was close and runs not crowded.

Meyers residents protest, speed limit hike moves forward anyway

Residents of Meyers met with Caltrans officials Tuesday evening in a public meeting to discuss the proposed raising of the speed limit on Highway 50. More than 50 residents, business owners and families showed up to question the wisdom of the proposal and the survey results themselves.
