3-D Sandbox exhibit brings Lake Tahoe watersheds to life

Sandboxes have come a long way. A new interactive, augmented-reality exhibit brings watersheds to life at the University of California, Davis' Tahoe Science Center in Incline Village, Nev.

Participants run their hands through real sand, forming mountains, lakes and rivers, while a 3-D camera and digital projector allowusers to create virtual topography in real time, make it "rain" and watch where the water flows.

Lake Tahoe Kids Triathlon This Sunday

The City of South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department is proud to partner with the Tahoe Tri Club to host a Kids Triathlon this Sunday, July 21, at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex beginning at 1:30 p.m. Arrive early for registration. The cost of the event is $35.

The Tahoe Kids Triathlon is a triathlon (series) for kids ages 3-13. The triathlon course includes the Recreation Complex Swimming Pool, Parking Lot, and Greenway that surrounds the Campground. A post-race party, barbecue and yearly age-group awards will follow the triathlon.

Heavenly plans include ropes course, ziplines, bike park

Heavenly Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe has submitted a proposal to the USDA Forest Service and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency for expansions to its on-mountain summer activities, as part of Vail Resorts’ Epic Discovery, a Summer Mountain Adventure.

The University of Nevada, Reno is set to hold the 57th Lake Tahoe Music Camp July 21-27 at the Nevada State 4-H Camp. Each year, nearly 200 students in grades 8 through 12 participate in a week of music activities, rehearsals, team building exercises and recreation time, all on the shores of beautiful Lake Tahoe.

The camp is filled with jazz and classical music workshops, clinics, performances, mentoring and instruction with award-winning University faculty, guest conductors, professional Chamber singers and jazz musicians and more.

Lake in the Sky Air Show at Lake Tahoe Airport celebrates 24 years

The City of South Lake Tahoe is pleased to host the 24th Annual Lake in the Sky Air Show at Lake Tahoe Airport in beautiful South Lake Tahoe, California on Saturday, August 24, 2013 from 8:00 am -3:30 pm.

The Lake in the Sky Air Show has been described as “the best in the west” by one of the Navy’s participants.

This year’s show will include exciting aerobatic performances by several top performers including Bill Cornick, Jon Melby and Spencer Suderman. Festivities begin on Friday, August 23rd and run through Sunday, August 25.

South Lake Tahoe Tahoe Kids Triathlon this Sunday

The City of South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department is proud to partner with the Tahoe Tri Club and is hosting a Kids Triathlon this Sunday, June 30 at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex at 3 p.m. Registration for the event is $35.

The Tahoe Kids Triathlon is a super fun and super spectator friendly triathlon (series) for kids ages 3-13. The triathlon course includes the Recreation Complex Swimming Pool, Parking Lot, and Greenway that surrounds the Campground. A post-race party, BBQ and yearly age-group awards will follow the triathlon.

Here’s an advance notice of something very special in the outdoor world that will occur in just a few days: Draw a great big red circle around the date of Saturday, June 8 on your calendar and then plan to have a fun-filled day in the Great Outdoors.

June 8 is Nevada’s Free Fishing Day for the year 2013. On that day, you can fish anywhere you want, and not need a Nevada fishing license or a Nevada Trout Stamp or a Nevada Second Rod Stamp.

United Way partners with grants to help Lake Tahoe area agencies

Several Lake Tahoe area nonprofit organizations and agencies will receive financial aid this year through partnerships announced Monday by the United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra.

The partnerships are aimed to address issues identified in each of the Lake Tahoe area communities, said Karen Barsell, CEO and president of United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra.

San Diego State students forego traditional spring break to serve South Lake Tahoe

Fifteen students from San Diego State University will forego the typical spring break of beaches and relaxation to teach thousands of children in a small mountain community how to save energy and save the environment.

Father and two sons injured when SUV crashes into South Lake Tahoe Denny's

A South Lake Tahoe father and two sons were injured Thursday morning after the SUV they were in crashed Denny's restaurant on Al Tahoe Boulevard, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department reports.

Todd Jackson, 28, suffered moderate injuries in the 8:50 a.m. accident after being extricated from the 2002 Dodge Durango by the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department. He was taken to Renown Medical Center in Reno. Jackson's two sons, 11 and 8-years-old, were taken to Barton Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released for minor injuries.

Agency, search and rescue host kids Winter Wilderness Survival program

For the past 17 years, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District and Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue have collaborated together to teach the 4th graders at Incline Elementary School about Winter Wilderness Survival, better known as the “Hug-A-Tree” program. The program focuses on teaching children what to do should they ever find themselves lost in the wilderness. This year the program will be held at the Incline Elementary School on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

Lake Tahoe agency helps families provide for a better Christmas

Tahoe Regional Planning Agency staff dug into their wallets and scoured shopping and grocery stores continuing the tradition of bringing a little cheer to local children and families in need over the holidays.

This year staff provided gifts of clothes and toys to 35 foster children ages 4 – 17 through Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).

Nevada Governor Sandoval Asks For Assessment Of School Security

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval today said he wants an assessment of how Nevada’s public schools are doing in regards to security following the horrific shooting deaths a week ago at a Connecticut elementary school.
Sandoval made the request as chairman of the state Homeland Security Commission, which met today by teleconference. A presentation will be prepared for the next meeting of the commission.
