Public meeting on planning of 56-Acre Master Plan

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The public is invited to participate in another 56-Acre Master Plan virtual session on January 20, 2021 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Planning is underway to create a signature park and area in the heart of South Lake Tahoe that will fill a large wish list of projects.

There are many ways the community can participate including taking the self-guided tour onsite, the online survey, and joining the public online meeting.

Tahoe Best in the Basin Award winners announced

Seven outstanding restoration, sustainability, and construction projects were recognized as recipients of Best in the Basin awards by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) during an online meeting of the agency’s Governing Board. The projects and programs each exhibit outstanding planning and execution and lead the way in environmental stewardship in the Lake Tahoe Region, according to the agency.

Self-guided tour of 56-acre project available Monday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In an effort to get more members of the public involved in the process a walking tour map of the 56-acre project area in the middle of South Lake Tahoe has been created.

Flu Shot Clinics set for South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County and Alpine County

Each year flu causes millions of illnesses, hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations, and tens of thousands of deaths in the United States. While it is unclear what will happen this fall and winter, if there is COVID-19 and
flu at the same time, this could place a tremendous burden on our health care systems and cause many additional illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths. Conservancy awards City of South Lake Tahoe $425K to plan downtown 56-acre project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy has awarded a $425,000 grant to the City of South Lake Tahoe to help plan the future of the 56-Acre site, a south shore hub of civic and recreation activity across Highway 50 from Lakeview Commons.

“The 56-Acre site is already a vibrant gathering place for community members and visitors alike, and it has the potential to be so much more,” said South Lake Tahoe City Councilmember and Conservancy Board member Tamara Wallace.

2nd virtual town hall meeting for El Dorado County vacation home rentals at Lake Tahoe

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The second virtual Town Hall meeting focusing on vacation home rentals (VHRs) in the El Dorado County portion of Lake Tahoe will be held on Wednesday, June 10 at 4:00 p.m. on Zoom.

Led by District 5 Supervisor Sue Novasel, she and staff will provide some background on VHRs regulations to date, review options for meeting the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency neighborhood compatibility Performance Review Standards, and review input received from the public, addressing questions and comments received.

El Dorado County lifts orders but California stay-at-home orders still in place

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One layer of stay-at-home orders has been lifted for El Dorado County as its Public Health Officer, Dr. Nancy Williams, has lifted her stay-at-home directive effective April 30, the original date it was to be lifted when set on March 19.

This doesn't mean that South Lake Tahoe and the county are open for business though as the State's order is still in effect.

"We are requesting from the Governor that we [South Lake Tahoe] can move towards reopening in a phased approach with attention paid to his six guidelines," said South Lake Tahoe Mayor Jason Collin.

Area agencies planning and using precaution in case COVID-19 hits South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Over 34 million Americans have caught the flu this year with over 20,000 deaths recorded, but its the coronavirus COVID-19 that is getting all the headlines.

There are no current reported cases of COVID-19 in South Lake Tahoe/El Dorado County, Alpine County or Douglas County, but local agencies want to be prepared, just in case people come down with the virus.

Standstill on South Lake Tahoe area highway and streets; Groups looking into solution

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's almost a perfect storm for traffic in Lake Tahoe: extra visitors in town for the holiday weekend and epic ski conditions with snow and chain requirements over US50 and Echo Summit.

On Monday, locals and visitors alike were part of that storm, leaving motorists stranded along US 50, Lake Tahoe Blvd., and all surface streets in Meyers that have a link to the highway over Echo Summit.

Over 500 search and rescue volunteers and professionals heading to South Lake Tahoe

El Dorado County Search and Rescue is hosting SAREX 2018 (Search and Rescue Exercise) over the September 7-9 weekend at locations around South Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe Community College is the base for the event which will bring in over 500 search and rescue volunteers and professionals from around California.

The weekend long exercise will include air, water, and off highway vehicle operations. The public can expect to see increased activity of emergency vehicles, including helicopters and the organizers do not want the public to be concerned.

Search continues for swimmer missing in Lake Tahoe

8:00 p.m. 8/5/18 UPDATE: SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of a 21-year-old California man was located in Lake Tahoe Sunday afternoon, more than 24 hours after he jumped off a boat near Edgewood Tahoe.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Office cadaver dogs alerted others to the body of the man about one-quarter mile off shore between Tahoe Meadows and Lakeside Marina just before 5:00 p.m. Sunday, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Traci Trapani.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care celebrates 40th anniversary with special party

For 40 years, Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) has been helping animals out of Tom and Cheryl Millham's home. Every from bears to birds have entered their loving doors, and now they are holding a celebration of the first 40 years on Sunday, May 20 at Revive Coffee and Wine from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

There will be a ceremony at 4:00 p.m. acknowledging various people and agencies who have worked with LTWC as well as receiving proclamations from the City of South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County, the State of California and from the U. S. House of Representatives.

Free chipping service for city and county residents

Residents of South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado county, Fallen Leaf Lake and Alpine County are encouraged to take advantage of the free curbside chipping service offered by the Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD).

The free service will be offered through October, weather permitting.

Homeowners can work on their defensible space by removing limbs and slash on their property, then the chipping crew will come by and collect it, then convert into wood chips.

This action reduces flammable vegetation and helps homeowners protect their property from the threat of wildfire.

Bear Boxes available for Lake Tahoe customers of South Tahoe Refuse

South Tahoe Refuse is rolling out a Bear Box loan program for their customers living in both California and Nevada at Lake Tahoe, including South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County and Douglas County customers.

Customers can purchase a box up to a value of $1,300 from approved vendors and repay the cost through a $65 increase in their quarterly refuse bill.

City, County, State and law enforcement officials meet to discuss Tahoe traffic jams

Sunday traffic heading west from South Lake Tahoe has been a major problem from the city to Meyers all winter long. Last week, on March 5, there were reports of travel time on the 9.3 mile route along Highway 50 from Stateline to Meyers taking eight hours, and from the Y to Meyers, four hours for the 4.3 mile trip.

Team rescues injured backcountry skier in Lake Tahoe

El Dorado County Sheriff's Office brought together a Search and Rescue team on Sunday, February 26 after they were notified of an injured woman in the Eagle Buttress area that needed to be rescued off the mountain.

The 56-year-old Truckee woman was in the backcountry skiing with a group when she suffered an injury to her leg and was unable to ski out on her own.

Eagle Buttress is located to the north of Eagle Lake near Emerald Bay.

Controversy brewing as City and County reps on Tahoe Conservancy Board resign

Friday's board meeting of the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) was delayed almost two hours due to ice on the road near near Zephyr Cove, causing it to close, and those weren't the only icy conditions on the South Shore that day.

The other ice could be felt during the meeting as conflict of interest, ethics, integrity, suspicious actions and lack of transparency were the theme of the day.

All three items on the agenda Friday were placed there amid a stressed relationship between the City of South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County and Patrick Wright, the Executive Director of the CTC.

El Dorado County closes offices and court

Due to extreme weather conditions in South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County has closed their offices at the lake.

Judge Suzanne Kingsbury said the South Lake Tahoe branch of the El Dorado Superior Court will be closed on Tuesday, January 10, 2017. Those who have a court case today will be trailed until tomorrow at the same time it was scheduled Tuesday.

All other court locations will be open.

LONG-TERM PROJECTS
State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by summer 2017.

Missing woman's car found near Emerald Bay

The car belonging to Carolyn Batchelor, the Zephyr Cove woman missing since February 15, has been found near Emerald Bay, but there is still no sign of the 69-year-old woman.

The California Highway Patrol located the vehicle in the area of Inspiration Point, overlooking the bay near South Lake Tahoe. El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and Search and Rescue team, along with Douglas County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue are searching the area where Batchelor's car was found.

Supervisor Novasel creates South Lake Tahoe/El Dorado County vision committee

Supervisor Sue Novasel, Lake Tahoe’s representative on the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors, announced the formation of an ad hoc committee that will engage a visioning process related to future development and use of County-owned properties and facilities in South Lake Tahoe. The vision committee will join with two members of the City Council and staff in collaborating toward mutual facility goals.

Senior legal seminars coming to South Lake Tahoe

El Dorado County Senior Legal Services, a program of the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, is hosting a series of legal seminars in South Lake Tahoe for seniors during September and October, 2015. The seminar series, entitled "Planning for the Future," provides information about financial and health planning. Individuals may attend the series or just one class. Reservations are not required. Man arrested in South Lake Tahoe on Bay Area home invasion and assault charges

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office helped investigators from the Dublin (CA) Police and Alameda County Sheriff's office arrest a 38-year-old man in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, June 9. Dublin Police had a warrant for the arrest of Matthew Daniel Muller, a suspect in an attempted home invasion robbery that resulted in the assault of the homeowner.

Muller, a resident of Orangevale, CA, was found in his family vacation home on Genoa Avenue in the county portion of the South Shore.

Lane closures on west slope of El Dorado County

If you're planning a trip to the west slope near El Dorado Hills, you'll want to take note of a lane closure that will hamper travel.

The Transportation Division of El Dorado County’s Community Development Agency will have Francisco Drive in El Dorado Hills closed from the intersection of El Dorado Hills Blvd to Cambria Way beginning on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 and continuing for 7 days, 24 hours per day, until reopening on Wednesday, April 8, 2015.

Heavenly's Epic Project closer to reality; Final environmental report ready

The final environmental impact report on Heavenly Mountain Resort's Epic Discovery Project has been completed and is now ready for public review. South Lake Tahoe Celebrates the 4th of July

Communities across the country are celebrating America's Independence Day and South Lake Tahoe is no different.

Thousands of visitors have come to town to enjoy fireworks, BBQs and family fun. There are many ways to celebrate Friday:

Head out to watch the 3rd Annual Fourth of July Parade at 10 a.m. Cars, trucks and other vehicles will set out from Les Schwab Tires at the Y and head down Highway 50 to the American Legion where there will be a BBQ. Parks, Recreation and Tourism Workshops for South Lake Tahoe

Police: South Lake Tahoe man confesses to El Dorado Savings Bank robbery

A 29-year-old South Lake Tahoe man has confessed to the March 7 robbery of El Dorado Savings Bank, South Lake Tahoe police confirm.

Paul Cortez was arrested by Reno police and booked into Washoe County Jail where he will be transferred to South Lake Tahoe and booked into El Dorado County Jail. Police say he confessed to details about the robbery and how much money was taken.

South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County election results begin at 8 p.m. Tuesday

The South Lake Tahoe City Clerk’s Office, in coordination with the El Dorado County Elections Department, will be airing Election Results as they are updated by the County on the City’s Government Channel 21 beginning at 8 p.m. Tuesday. The 8 p.m. results will show the results of the absentee ballots received prior to the election.
As standard procedure, at the 8pm close of the polling places, City/County ballots from the Lake Tahoe basin will be transported down to the El Dorado County Elections Department. Results for the ballots collected from the basin are generally posted by 11pm.

Garbage bills going up for South Shore customers

Garbage rates are expected to go up throughout the South Shore starting May 1. The joint powers authority that oversees waste matters agreed to recommend the rate increase earlier this month. Now the three jurisdictions — South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County, and Douglas County — need to approve the hike.

At the urging of Congressman Tom McClintock, R-Calif., a committee has been formed to find an unnamed mountain peak seen from South Lake Tahoe that will be dedicated to fallen U.S. soldiers from the area.
Congressman McClintock's office approached the U.S. Forest Service about opportunities for a memorial. Forest Supervisor Nancy Gibson came up with the idea of naming an unnamed peak as one of the options for a memorial on National Forest System lands.
