SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is more to do in South Lake Tahoe on the 4th of July than watch one of the top fireworks shows in the west.

To start off the holiday, the City of South Lake Tahoe is organizing the annual 4th of July parade down Highway 50 from Ski Run Boulevard to Bijou Community Park on Al Tahoe Boulevard starting at 10:00 a.m.

Pilot full closure program on two roads in Meyers to help address traffic issues

El Dorado County unveiled their pilot plan Tuesday evening, one that is designed to help alleviate traffic congestion on Meyer's back roads during two holiday weekends this summer.

El Dorado County Department of Transportation (EDCDOT) Director Rafael Martinez joined other staff members in presenting the traffic congestion circulation alternative to the approximately 25 people in attendance. There will be a hard closure in place on Sawmill Road near Highway 50, and on North Upper Truckee near Highway 50 during the July 4th and Labor Day holiday weekends as part of a pilot project.

Bay Area woman identified as Eagle Falls accident victim

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 35-year-old woman from the San Francisco Bay Area has been identified as the person who was swept away in the quick-moving current of Eagle Falls near Emerald Bay on Friday.

Dina Stephanie Espinosa had been sitting in one of the pools of water near the waterfall when she slipped as she was reaching for a branch, got caught in the current and went over the waterfall, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO).

Golden Bear neighborhood to hold emergency evacuation drill

Airport Way renamed "Lisa Maloff Way" in honor of her numerous contributions

Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School 1st grader "Principal for a Day"

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It isn't every day that 7-year-old Rocco DeFranco begins his day with a ride to Freel Perk for a cup of hot chocolate with Principal Joe Dameral before heading to Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School (LTESM) to begin his day.

And that was just the beginning of a day that wasn't a normal one for the first grader.

During the school's recent Spring Fling Pasta Dinner fundraiser, Rocco bid on an interesting silent auction item to be Principal for a Day. He spent his savings of $180 on that special day and Rocco was able to collect his prize on May 3.

Multiple agencies respond to fire Saturday in prescribed burn area of South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Several agencies responded to a report of fire behind Sierra Tahoe Ready-Mix near Twin Peaks in South Lake Tahoe just before noon on Saturday, April 27.

Cabin west of Lake Tahoe suffers total loss in fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A home at the intersection of Highway 50 and Sierra-at-Tahoe Road in the historic community of Phillips is a total loss after a fire ripped through it Friday night.

At 11:15 p.m. on April 12, Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) crews were called out to the scene along with several other agencies. Upon arrival, they found the home fully engulfed. Inside the home had been two women, one male, two dogs and two cats.

The male was transported to Barton Hospital with smoke inhalation and one cat was lost to the fire.

Cal-Tahoe JPA moves towards new 10-year contract with County

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For almost 18 years the California Tahoe Emergency Services Operations Authority (CTESOA) has been providing ambulance service to the portions of El Dorado County at Lake Tahoe and parts of northwestern Alpine County through a Joint Powers Authority (JPA).

Highway reopens after another snow slide closes Echo Summit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Travelers over Highway 50 and Echo Summit today had some challenges, once after the road was closed for avalanche control, and a second time when a snow slide covered the road.

One person was injured when their car was involved in the snow slide. They were transferred to the hospital with non-serious injuries according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO). Another buried car had no injuries involved.

Lake Valley Fire Protection District hosting annual Easter Egg Hunt

MEYERS, Calif. - The Lake Valley Firefighters Foundation is once again sponsoring their annual Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday, April 21 at Tahoe Paradise Park. Over 10,000 eggs will be hidden for kids to find, including the Golden Egg containing a special prize.

The day's activities will include a visit by the Easter Bunny and the historic fire truck. Bring a camera for these photo opportunities. There will be a bake sale, hot cocoa, and coffee.

Arrive at 9:30 a.m. to prepare for the 10:00 a.m. hunt. Parking is limited.

16th annual Drug Store Project in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Tuesday, April 2, 325 6th graders from South Tahoe Middle School, Zephyr Cove Elementary School and home-schooled youth, will spend the day at Lake Tahoe Community College going through the 16th annual Drug Store Project.

Since 2004, middle school students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) have gone through the Drug Store Project (DSP), a day-long comprehensive drug prevention program designed to educate youth about the dangers of substance use and abuse.

STPUD starts process to raise water and sewer rates

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) will start the process to raise water service rates by up to six percent and sewer rates by up to five percent in order to start replacing aging pipes and providing improved fire flow throughout their service area. If fully implemented, this increase would fuel an $81.5M capital improvement program for sewer improvements, and $70M for water system improvements, especially fire flow projects.

John Thiel: New man at the helm of South Tahoe Public Utility District

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After Richard Solbrig told the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) Board of Directors he was retiring in January 2019 after 29 years with the agency the hunt was on for a new general manager.

It turned out they didn't have to look far.

John Thiel had been hired by Solbrig in 1992 as a staff engineer and he worked his way up through the ranks over the last 27 years until the Board chose him as the new general manager.

South Lake Tahoe traffic meeting: "Our quality of life has been affected"

MEYERS, Calif. - Traffic through neighborhoods in the Meyers area has become unbearable to many residents as vehicles leaving South Lake Tahoe to take to side streets in an effort to circumvent Highway 50 traffic over Echo Summit.

In an effort to find solutions to a problem that keeps Meyers residents from their homes for hours at a time, a townhall-style meeting was held on Friday night.

South Lake Tahoe rollover crash sends two to hospital with minor injuries

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A woman and her three-year-old child were transported to Barton Hospital Wednesday evening after their vehicle rolled several times on Pioneer Trail just east of Jicarilla Drive in South Lake Tahoe.

The early reports completed by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) state the 25-year-old driver lost control of her vehicle and it hit the guardrail twice before rolling and landing on its roof. Witnesses told responding Lake Valley Firefighters they saw the car roll five times.

Man arrested after honey oil lab starts house fire in Meyers

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A rental home in Meyers was severely damaged in a fire on January 15, 2019, the result of an illegal drug lab according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO).

At 3:18 p.m., Lake Valley Fire Protection District responded to the report of a car crashing into a home at the intersection of Tomahawk Lane and Apache Avenue. Upon arrival, they found a structure and vehicle fire and called in South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue for backup.

Standstill on South Lake Tahoe area highway and streets; Groups looking into solution

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's almost a perfect storm for traffic in Lake Tahoe: extra visitors in town for the holiday weekend and epic ski conditions with snow and chain requirements over US50 and Echo Summit.

On Monday, locals and visitors alike were part of that storm, leaving motorists stranded along US 50, Lake Tahoe Blvd., and all surface streets in Meyers that have a link to the highway over Echo Summit.

Kitchen fire closes Hunan Garden temporarily

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Hunan Garden on Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe is closed after a fire broke out in the kitchen's grease shoot, spreading to the stove and exhaust vent.

At 11:09 p.m. on January 18, crews from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue arrived at the restaurant and saw flames shooting out of the vents on the roof. Not knowing the extent of the fire they called in Lake Valley Fire and Tahoe Douglas Fire to assist.

The hood system worked and kept the fire in check until the crews could extinguish the fire.

Fire in Meyers quickly extinguished by Lake Valley

MEYERS, Calif - A quick response by Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) kept a Tuesday afternoon fire from spreading in Meyers, just outside of South Lake Tahoe.

The calls into 911 first alerted first responders that a car had collided with a residence on Tomahawk Lane and Apache Avenue. Upon arrival they found a structure and vehicle fire.

At 3:18 p.m., LVFPD responded with engines, medic and battalion chiefs while South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue also sent an engine and crew.

Tahoe Warm Room open house for the community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless is hosting an open house at the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room on February 7, 2019 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The event will begin with tours of the Warm Room from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Warm Room is the overnight emergency shelter we operate each winter to give our homeless neighbors respite from the worst of the winter weather. This year the Warm Room is located at 1201 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe, next door to Ernie’s Coffee Shop.

One arrested in South Lake Tahoe honey oil explosion

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One man has been arrested in connection with Friday's house fire on Kyburz Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.

Joe Johnson, 37, was arrested on a felony charge of manufacturing a controlled substance and a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of a police officer.

Fire at Presbyterian Church in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A fire at the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church on Wednesday evening caused an estimated $50,000 in damage according to South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR).

At 6:20 p.m. on January 9, a call was received by the police department's dispatch center about a fire at the church, located at 2733 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Not only did two engines, a squad truck and battalion chief respond for SLTFR, Lake Valley Fire sent in an engine and battalion chief and Tahoe Douglas Fire contributed a fire truck, ambulance and chief.

57th annual Lake Valley Firefighter's Ball

Parents question safety at Sierra House Elementary after school reopens soon after fire

Had it not been for the quick response by Lake Valley Fire Protection District the discussion would be about replacing the 44-year-old South Lake Tahoe school rather than the processes involved to get it cleaned up and opened in just two days.

Outpouring of love by South Shore community for Camp Fire victims

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It takes a tragedy to bring people together, no matter their politics, their income or twitter handle.

Many in the South Lake Tahoe and Meyers community remember where they were at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, June 24, 2007 and what happened in the days that followed. The Angora Fire quickly tore through neighborhoods, destroying 251 homes and burning 3,100 acres. While it seems small in comparison with the monster fires of 2017 and 2018, it took everything from so many local families.

The community came together to help their friends and neighbors.

Sierra House Elementary fire caused by power cord overload

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A fire at Sierra House Elementary School on November 11, 2018 was caused by an electrical overload due to “daisy chain wiring” of two power cords in a classroom.

When firefighters from Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) arrived at the school at 9:35 p.m. they found smoke once the front doors were opened and flames observed as they turned the corner near the "upper pod" wing.

Dave Huber retires after 35 years of serving with Lake Valley Fire

Lake Valley Fire Protection District Director Dave Huber has retired after serving seven years as a volunteer firefighter and 28 years on their Board of Directors.

During his term as a director, Huber helped start the Cal Tahoe Emergency Services Operations Authority ambulance program where he also served as a board member.

Evacuation planning session for Golden Bear neighborhood

The Golden Bear neighborhood of South Lake Tahoe will be holding an evacuation planning meeting with the Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) on Wednesday, November 14 at 5:30 p.m. at Station 6.

Residents in the area have created a spread sheet of every home, information on the residents, how many pets and other specific issues with each home. The approached LVFPD in helping them to prepare evacuation information since there is only one entrance/exit to their area off Pioneer Trail.

Multiple agencies respond to fire at Sierra House Elementary

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif - An automatic fire alarm was triggered by a fire inside Sierra House Elementary school at 9:35 p.m. Sunday, November 11, bringing out a full response from fire fighters around the lake and law enforcement.

Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) was the first on the scene and saw smoke coming from the school which is located at Pioneer Trail and Remington Trail. Once inside they found fire in what is known as the upper pod at the school.

Names released in officer involved shooting in South Lake Tahoe

The names of the two South Lake Tahoe police detectives involved in last Monday's officer involved shooting have been released.

South Lake Tahoe house fire displaces two

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A home in South Lake Tahoe is most likely a total loss after a fire ripped through it Friday evening.

At 5:08 p.m. on November 2, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) was dispatched to a home in the 1800 block of Delta Street in the Y area of town. Upon arrival they found an 800-square-foot home fully engulfed with flames.

The two residents of the house were not at home when the fire broke out.

Home severely damaged in South Lake Tahoe fire

10.3.18 update: The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department has released their final report on the September 22 fire at a Sonora Avenue home.

According to their report, the exact cause of the fire could not be determined except that it started on the couch on the first floor.

Property loss is estimated at $200,000 with an additional $50,000 in contents loss. Smoke detectors were installed at the home and all went off when the fire started.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Emergency crews responded to two South Lake Tahoe fires on Saturday, one a house fire and another a brush fire.

Quick response keeps Echo Summit fire contained to small area

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An illegal and abandoned campfire near the Pacific Crest Trail ignited a fire on Wednesday evening.

Crews from USFS, Lake Valley Fire and Calfire were called to the 5:20 p.m. fire on September 19. They staged at the Echo Summit Caltrans maintenance yard on Highway 50, and when determined to be on Forest Service land, the Engine 42 crew from USFS hiked into the fire location and the others were on call in case needed.

Firefest returns to South Lake Tahoe

Fire Fest 2018 will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. outside the Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe. Admission is free and it's a great opportunity for families to have fun while learning about fire safety and conservation.

Helicopters will star again this year as they land just outside the venue at the Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe. What an incredible opportunity to get a close-up look at these amazing machines. Crews will be on hand to answer questions and explain how they help us when we need them most.

Lake Valley Fire Protection District seeking board member

There are two open seats for the Lake Valley Fire Protection District Board of Directors, and with only one candidate in the November 6 election, the Board is seeking nominees to fill the other vacancy.

Brian Hogan, an appointed incumbent, is the only person to file for the November 6 election. The current board is Chairperson Robert Bettencourt, Vice-Chairperson Dave Huber, Secretary John Rice and directors Leona Allen and Hogan. Huber is not seeking re-election.
