On November 8, voters in South Lake Tahoe are tasked with selecting not only local and national leadership, but they are also faced with raising taxes. Measure P is on the ballot, but it is very different than other taxes, and let me explain why.

I have lived, worked and been very involved in this community for 36 years and this is the first time I have been compelled to write a letter in support of a candidate. I am writing this letter in support of Jason Collin for City Council.

This November the right choice for South Lake Tahoe is Jason Collin! Jason is a thoughtful, collaborative and engaging leader with a responsible and positive vision for our community. It has been my pleasure to witness his leadership skills first hand working on volunteer boards and local events together! Jason is a top notch individual whose common sense, respectful communication style and energy are desperately needed on the City Council.

The Board of Trustees at Lake Tahoe Community College has fully thrown its support behind a $9 billion bond measure on the November 8 ballot, called Proposition 51: Public School Facility Bonds, which would provide funds for public school construction and repairs in California.

This letter is for anyone interested in seeing students in Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) get the best opportunities possible.

Dr. Annie Davidson should be the next LTUSD School Board member from Trustee Area #1. Since coming to Lake Tahoe, she has jumped into the community with great energy and commitment. For example, she is an adjunct faculty member of Lake Tahoe Community College and co-teacher at Tahoe Parents Nursery School with Aileen Yure and Jennifer David. She served as member of the Sierra House Elementary PTA Board as a co-grant coordinator, classroom volunteer, and also volunteers with the Coalition for the Homeless and Warm Room Advisory Council.

To the South Shore community: My name is Troy Matthews and I am thrilled to announce my candidacy for Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Education in Trustee Area 4. My wife Rae and I honeymooned in South Tahoe and decided not to leave. We have fallen in love with this community and have taken active roles in many different local organizations. I work for Tahoe Youth & Family Services, one of the oldest local non-profit organizations in the region serving at-risk and underprivileged youth in South Lake Tahoe.

I am lucky to have lived in South Lake Tahoe for 9 years and grateful to be raising my children in such a wonderful place. I received a Masters Degree in Land Use Planning from UNR and am currently a solution oriented AICP, Senior Planner at Midkiff & Associates. My commitment to community service led me to the Leadership Lake Tahoe program, board membership with the Tahoe Drug Free Coalition, the Chamber Government Affairs Committee and the fight against climate change.

My name is Tamara Wallace and I am a candidate for South Lake Tahoe City Council. To begin with, I have vowed to not accept the pay that comes from holding office.

In a letter to City Clerk Susie Alessi, it was officially stated that if elected I would not accept the recently doubled Council salary of almost $1,000 per month. Being a fiscal conservative, I feel being careful with taxpayer dollars should start with me.

South Lake Tahoe is opening doors for a new venture with TEDx, hosting the inaugural TEDxSouthLakeTahoe event on October 5, 2016 at The Loft in Heavenly Village from 4:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

A local, independently organized event, TEDxSouthLakeTahoe is striving to create an environment which inspires individuals to think and engage on both a community and global scale, much like what is expected from the popular phenomenon of TED.

Four local boys from Troop 468 recently received their Eagle Scout Awards; Hilton Atherton, III, Christopher Evans, Aubrey Felton and Quinn Kixmiller. All of them are recent George Whittell High School graduates who reached this lifetime goal with nearly 50 years of combined scouting experience.

Veteran community advocate Steve Teshara has accepted the position of Interim Chief Executive Officer of the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce. Chamber Board Chair Mike McLaughlin announced the Board’s appointment of Teshara in a statement released July 21.

“Our Board is extremely pleased Steve has agreed to step in to support the Chamber’s mission, membership, and community engagement while we seek a new CEO to move the organization into 2017 and beyond,” said McLaughlin. “Steve adds a unique blend of experiences and accomplishments to our dedicated Chamber staff.”

Engineer test. Check. Hire an Assistant Chief. Check. Negotiate new three year contract with union. Check. Retire ....Almost check.

The board on the wall in Tahoe Douglas Fire Chief Ben Sharit's office has a list of to-dos, things he had to accomplish before he could retire. On Thursday, June 30, he will be able to check them all off.

Ben Sharit, the Chief since 2011, will leave his post after being in the EMT, paramedic, firefighter business since 1980.

Now that school is out, the City of South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department is offering their summer program, South Tahoe Adventure Camp (STAR).

STAR Youth Camp is designed for children ages 6-12 years (entering grades 1st-6th), Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., June 20 – August 19. The camps’ slogan is..."NO CHILD LEFT INSIDE!” Their mission is to provide an active, healthy, and safe environment for youth to learn and play. We focus on inspiring a love for the outdoors through exposure to the natural playground in and around the Tahoe region.

Douglas County residents will have some new leadership in Minden next January after under 35 percent of the voters decided the County's future during elections Tuesday.

Dave Nelson earned the support of 3,626 voters, given him a 12.2 percent edge over incumbent Greg Lynn in the District 1 race. Larry Walsh got 58.41 percent of the vote for District 3 over planning commissioner Frank Godecke.

Bread & Broth would like to thank and acknowledge the South Tahoe Middle School Club Live. Club Live is a program for middle school students that promotes a healthy life style through leadership events, recreational trips and community service projects. Under the guidance of Larry Lambdin and Beth Aiton, the program’s co-advisors, five members of the club helped serve at the Club Live’s “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” on Monday, May 16.

Don Ashton, the El Dorado County Director of Health & Human Services, was appointed Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) during the Board of Supervisor's meeting in Placerville Tuesday.

When Sue Novasel, the South Shore representative on the Board of Supervisors was asked why Ashton was chosen, she said his 23 years of experience in the public sector is extensive, and he'll know how to take the county to the next level.

A year ago, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors signed a resolution to participate in the Stepping Up initiative. The initiative, signed by two hundred fifty counties, has one lofty goal: reduce the number of adults with mental illness in the criminal justice system.

What has changed in the last year?

Mya Rossi has been named Youth of the Year by the Boys and Girls club of Lake Tahoe because of her outstanding contributions to both the club and her community.

Along with this role she will also be receiving a Heavenly/Kirkwood/Northstar season pass next winter courtesy of the Vail Epic Promise Program.

Catherine "Cat" Fuller has been selected for the Community Health Nurse/Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) position at the Douglas County Community Health Clinic.

After a nationwide recruitment, Carson City Health and Human Services along with Douglas County selected Fuller which included an interview process which began in February, 2016 and included a panel of nursing, social services, and administrative leadership from the Carson City and Douglas County Community Health and Social Services agencies.

Tahoe Women’s Community Fund (TWCF) has announced their inaugural Grants Gala on Friday, June 3, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Tahoe Beach Retreat in South Lake Tahoe.

ALL community members are invited and encouraged to attend to learn more about what the 170 members of TWCF are contributing to the community. Tickets are $35 and may be purchased

Entrepreneurs who have already started a business or are dreaming of starting one are often seeking the freedom to define their quality of life. Tahoe is appealing as one assumes they can work and “live the life,” however, many aspiring entrepreneurs and new business owners find the reality is often stress over licensing, logistics, finances and marketing.

The 170 women that make up the Tahoe Women's Community Fund recently voted to give away $22,000 to four local groups that met the criteria in four different categories.
