Nine South Tahoe High students in national art contest

They all made it to the finals of the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Warhol and King went on the win the national top prize, along with author Joyce Carol Oates and designer Zac Posen.
Could one of these local students be the next emerging star?
Eleven LTCC soccer players sign letters of intent
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/03/2016 - 8:43pmWednesday was National Signing Day, and eleven players on the the Lake Tahoe Community College Coyote soccer team signed letters of intent and accepted scholarships to attend four-year colleges. LTCC is the only Junior College in the country to send 100 percent of its sophomore team members to a four-year university to play sports.
Another STHS graduate and LTCC soccer player, Andres Orozco, signed a letter of intent to attend University of Antelope Valley in Lancaster, Calif.
The Coyotes made it to the state's Final Four this year and were the Golden Valley Conference Champs.

The next cast for the Tahoe Arts Project's Dancing with the Tahoe Stars has been announced, and the list contains ten South Lake Tahoe business owners, educators, police sergeant, and other well known locals.
Professional dancers will be working with the "celebrities" to teach them each a dance they'll bring to the MontBleu stage on Saturday, March 5, 2016.
The Stars:
Dr. Kelly Shanahan will be teamed up with Rainer Herm to dance Disco.
Iris Kahm is teamed up with Jorge Favio Orozco to dance Salsa.

November 6, 2015 - 7:00pm The Tahoe Area Sierra Club will be bringing “Wrenched,” a documentary film about Edward Abbey, to South Lake Tahoe on November 6, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at Unity at the Lake.
Edward Abbey authored twenty-one books in his lifetime, including Desert Solitaire, The Brave Cowboy, and The Fool's Progress. His comic novels, The Monkey Wrench Gang and Hayduke Lives helped inspire a whole generation of environmental activism.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to the "Y" junction with State Route 28 in Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore that will upgrade storm water drainage and treatment systems, add curb and gutter, resurface and realign the road, add new left-turn pockets and widen shoulders on a 9-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2016.
Multi-agency drug seizure in Nevada nets 6,000 marijuana plants
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/11/2015 - 7:41pmA large illicit marijuana grow in the mountains of Lincoln County, NV was eradicated after law enforcement found 6,476 marijuana plants in the remote area. The plants had an estimated street value of $17 million.
It appears that individuals had operated the site for several years and was capable of producing large quantities of illegal marijuana intended for sales and distribution. In addition to the marijuana plants, law enforcement personnel recovered and removed nearly two miles of black irrigation piping, along with various chemicals, used during the growing process

Reno man sentenced to jail after using plane to transport marijuana out of state

New Court Commissioner appointed for South Lake Tahoe

Hoffman will be based in South Lake Tahoe but will serve in all of the branches in El Dorado County. He will hear all case types, but will specialize in cases involving family law, child support, domestic violence and civil harassment, juvenile dependency and delinquency, traffic, limited civil cases, as well as overflow matters as assigned by the Presiding Judge.

With the assistance of the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and a determined committee, an unnamed peak on the North Shore of the Lake Tahoe Basin has been renamed “Gold Star Peak” in honor of soldiers from the area that paid the ultimate price in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and the War on Terrorism. A ceremony to dedicate Gold Star Peak will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 6, 2013, at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe.

Rural Economic Activity Boosts Nevada Taxable Sales By 7.2 Percent In March
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 05/29/2012 - 9:15pmCARSON CITY — Nevada’s taxable sales jumped 7.2 percent in March over March 2011, but the state’s two largest urban counties showed more sluggish growth, the state Department of Taxation reported Tuesday.
Taxable sales totaled $3.9 billion in March, driven by Nevada’s rural counties where large energy and mining projects helped boost the numbers overall. For the fiscal year to date, statewide taxable sales are up 7.5 percent.
Nevada committee declares counties in various drought stages

The committee is organizing and activating three regional task forces to address the drought impacts in local and regional areas to begin gathering information about local plans, needs, vulnerabilities and available resources.
