If you’ve visited Sierra Athletic Club, located in the South Shore’s Tahoe Keys lately, you’ve probably been the recipient of a contagious smile from Phillips, the gym manager. Skibum column: Getting stuck in the traffic of life

If the TTD took the $70 Million that they say it will cost to build the loop road and fix up the area they would still have enough over to give us a free bus system like most of the other resort towns. They are not alleviating any traffic flows or amount of cars only diverting them faster to Nevada. How is diverting the traffic helping the traffic situation, we will still have the same amount of cars on the road. I have said this before about other things done to us by our Government agency’s doing what’s best for them and us(mostly them).

Message from the Mayor: On The Road to Rethinking Tahoe

What do you get when you jam twelve community leaders in a small van and send them on the road for three days? In addition to lots of laughs and too many unanswered texts, this merry van of road warriors got a collective awakening to the positive power of change. The road trip, sponsored by www.Tahoechamber.org, was an eye-opening view of how other communities solved what seemed insurmountable problems and, in doing so, prospered.

Watch it live: South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting

Update 6PM: City Council votes 4-1 not hire a firm to do a search for a new city manager. Instead leaders agreed to wait 90 days, until Oct. 1, to decide if interim City Manager Nancy Kerry should get the job. In the meantime, a firm was selected to do a background check on Kerry. Council members repeatedly noted and praised Kerry as being ethical and knows the city and its functions and is therefore trustworthy, is the most qualified for the job and that doing a search for anyone else is too costly and therefore unnecessary. Councilman Tom Davis, who voted no, said for public transparency and ethical reasons, there ought to be a search, even though Kerry is the general favorite among the council.

Best of Lake Tahoe snowsports season coming up now; storms line up for weekend skiing

OK, so it hasn't been the best snowsport season so far, but hold on, more snow is coming with storms over this weekend and we'll be able to ski off-piste without worrying about slightly hidden rock and logs. And on top of that, it's spring skiing, always the best of the year. Forget those crowds of December and January, don't recall those icy January days when the wind howled. It's spring skiing, lightly clad with plenty of sun for sitting on the lodge deck.

Movie Review: Action-scifi-adventure flick 'John Carter' a botch but sometimes fun

Make no mistake about it, "John Carter," a movie playing now at the Horizon Stadium Cinemas at Stateline, Lake Tahoe, is a multi-million-budgeted film that takes itself seriously, although audiences may not. It's ripped from the pages of a 1912 newspaper series by Edgar Rice Burroughs of "Tarzan fame" (newspapers ran fun things like that in better times).

MontBleu General Manager Jef Bauer abruptly resigns

MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa in Stateline, Nev., Lake Tahoe announced today that Jef Bauer, General Manager, resigned effective immediately.

Plenty of snow at Lake Tahoe for spring skiing, snowboarding

It's been a weird ski and riding season, for sure. One indication is that Heavenly Mountain Resort is only operating the Boulder base lodge and the Boulder and North Bowl lifts on weekends. In all the years I taught at Boulder never has had a shutdown like this. Too bad because lots of locals liked Boulder as out-of-towners didn't go there very often. Thus, parking was close and runs not crowded.

In-town public sled hills disappear

Though it is off the radar, sledding will always have its place as an all-ages family activity. And though there are plenty of places to sled and tube around the city limits of South Lake Tahoe, the last of the remaining free places in town have dried up.
And not for a lack of snow, either. Two sled and tube hill favorites have been removed from the public after recent projects leveled some of the property to make way for expansions.

Diamond Peak at Lake Tahoe is the little resort that can

Diamond Peak mountain resort doesn't get much national press coverage largely because it is a family resort. But it has some fine runs and great views of Lake Tahoe. And its Last Tracks windup to a day on the slopes is unmatched anywhere around Tahoe. I know, I've gone it several times.
