New art gallery opening in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe has a new gallery, the Benko Art Gallery, and they'll be celebrating their grand opening on Sunday, April 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. with a celebration that will include beverages, hors d’oeuvres and live music.

Benko is located in the new Highland Village, located where the Highland Inn was once located at 3979 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Local curling and skeleton bobsled athlete featured on Mountain Resort Television

Local curling and skeleton bobsled athlete, Larry Sidney, will be featured as a guest reporter for Mountain Resort Television and their Lake Tahoe News Line featured on South Tahoe Now and seen on KAME-TV, My21TV.

Larry, a South Shore resident, is a member of Lake Tahoe Epic Curling, competing internationally with the Israel Curling Federation, and a competitive skeleton bobsled athlete for the Israeli team.

Vacation home rentals and massage parlors tackled at next City Council meeting

The Tuesday, April 4 South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting may have a short agenda, but two hot topics will be sure to bring out interested locals.

In February, 2016, Council sent proposed changes to a sub-committee, and those results will be up for vote Tuesday.

Proposed changes to the Vacation Home Rental (VHR) Ordinance include:

- Application for a VHR permit will not trigger the need to comply to TRPA BMP and coverage compliance.

In honor of April Fools Day, here is a reprint of our 2016 story.

Mike Bradford knew the April Fool's Day ad campaign was a hit when people started calling him to complain about Lakeside Inn's plans to turn Rabe Meadow into Lakeside Ranch. People took their rants to social media as well.

The headline read, "Lakeside Inn and Casino returns cattle grazing to historic Lake Shore Meadow." The story that followed outlined the casino's plans to raise prime Angus beef so their restaurant, Latin Soul, could put new meaning to the term, Farm-to-Table.

TTD adds new buses and scheduling system in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe locals and visitors utilizing transit opportunities have seen some recent changes including new buses, lighting, signage and a new scheduling system for those with disabilities and over the age of 60.

The Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) responded to input from the public and added the changes.

Community invited to participate in planning new Recreation Complex

On Thursday, March 31, the second community workshop on ideas for the Recreation Swim Complex will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the complex, located at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd.

These state, county, and city lines work well on a map, but they do not define the day-to-day reality of the people who live and work in this community. For the past few weeks, "celebrities" from South Lake Tahoe have been practicing with their professional partners, all in a quest to win the coveted mirror ball trophy in the Tahoe Arts Project's 4th annual Dancing with the Tahoe Stars

All of the rehearsing, and nursing aches and pains, have come down to this, the final event which will be held at MontBleu Resort on Saturday, March 5 at 6:30 p.m.

South Tahoe Now caught up with a few of the couples in their secret rehearsals as they polished up their dance moves in preparation for the big night.

Rude Brothers looks for new home after building is sold

The building is old and worn out, but the coffee, bagels and treats inside have kept both locals and visitors happy for over two decades.

Rude Brother's Bagels is located on the bottom floor of a building located at 3117 Harrison Avenue in South Lake Tahoe. The current owners of the popular coffee and bagel shop, Jim and Lisa Gosh, have been in the same location since 2001 after buying the business from Steve Rude.

South Lake Tahoe locals graduate from STAT training program

South Lake Tahoe citizens who graduated from the most recent South Tahoe Action Team (STAT) training sessions were honored during Tuesday's city council meeting.

The STAT program is designed to incorporate trained citizens in the field with the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department and other first responders during times of crisis. This is the first program of its kind in the Tahoe Basin.

"Our disaster preparedness capability is much better because of this class," said Fire Chief Jeff Meston.

TRPA to survey locals and visitors about travel modes

'Dough' opens in the Chateau, bringing fast, casual pizza to South Lake Tahoe

A year after opening his successful Sno Frozen Yogurt Cafe in the Chateau at the Village, Theron Baker joined family member and opened "Dough" right next door.

"Fast casual pizza is picking up across the country," said Baker. "I thought it'd be a good idea here."

Dough just opened on Saturday, February 13 and they've been hopping sever ince.

"The best thing about our pizza is that you don't have to share," added Baker.

Tahoe Warm Room celebrates two months since doors opened

It started with a spark of energy provided by Diana Hankins in December of 2013, and Thursday night two years of constant work and determination were celebrated at the Tahoe Warm Room during an Open House.

The Tahoe Warm Room opened their doors on December 18, 2015, and since then they have served 74 different people who have come in from the cold to keep warm, get clothing and blankets, a hot cup of coffee and meet with a social worker, if desired.

Contestants for Dancing With the Tahoe Stars announced

The next cast for the Tahoe Arts Project's Dancing with the Tahoe Stars has been announced, and the list contains ten South Lake Tahoe business owners, educators, police sergeant, and other well known locals.

Professional dancers will be working with the "celebrities" to teach them each a dance they'll bring to the MontBleu stage on Saturday, March 5, 2016.

The Stars:

Dr. Kelly Shanahan will be teamed up with Rainer Herm to dance Disco.
Iris Kahm is teamed up with Jorge Favio Orozco to dance Salsa.

South Lake Tahoe City Council wrap-up; Plastic bag ban partially rescinded

The agenda for the South Lake Tahoe City Council was a light one this week.

The plastic bag ban ordinance was amended to only affect grocery stores and not retail outlets. Former Mayor Hal Cole asked for the issue to be brought back before the council in October. "I thought we were only voting to bring the ordinance back for review, not to pass it," Cole said about his vote on October 15, 2013.

Lake Tahoe native returns to open chiropractic clinic

Dr. Chris Pavich, who was born and raised in South Lake Tahoe, has returned to his hometown to open Kingsbury Chiropractic.

After attending the University of Nevada, Reno and earning his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life West Chiropractic College, Dr. Pavich opened his office located at 276 Kingsbury Grade #1050 in Stateline.

He will be celebrating the new office with a Tahoe Chamber ribbon cutting event on January 28, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. The Grand Opening is from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Pavich is the grandson of Sierra Ski Ranch founder Vern Sprock.

LTVA uses interactive tools to help visitors plan their Lake Tahoe vacations

With an estimated three million visitors to the Lake Tahoe Basin annually, there is a lot of vacation planning occurring, and the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority has made it easier for those traveling to the South Shore.

Six months ago they launched "Explore Your Trip," a itinerary planning tool on their website that helps travelers plan their trip based on what they like to do, what their budget, what they like to each and many other categories.

Tahoe, A Visual History may be gone, but memories to last a lifetime

Recently, I had the chance to visit the much-hyped Tahoe: A visual History at the Nevada Museum of Art. Located in the hip, CalAve District wedged between downtown and midtown Reno, the museum offers locals to the region a taste of world-class art collections. During events like Art Town (a marathon of a hundred-or-so art related events in Reno during the month of July), the museum offers innumerable pieces from local and global artists alike.

Can you live in a world without tailpipes and smokestacks?

That was the question asked a few times by Ken Caldeira, Climate Scientist at Carnegie Institution for Science, during Friday's session of "Operation Sierra Storm (OSS)" in South Lake Tahoe.

Man's fall at Heavenly turns into international bear attack story

A ski trip to South Lake Tahoe by a group of friends from the San Francisco Bay Area turned into a trip to the hospital after one of them fell while skiing on December 29, 2015.

Ski accidents do happens often, but the international attention the victim's accident got from a news source in Ireland gained attention from South Lake Tahoe locals following the photo and story on social media that the injury was from a bear attack.

New on the South Shore: Neighborhood Burgers opens on Kingsbury

A new burger place has opened on the South Shore, giving residents on the Nevada side of town a new option for eating out (or on the run).

Neighborhood Burgers was opened by locals Erik Watada and Matt Grime, and in less than a week of being open its already a hit.

Grime, owner of The Fox & Hound at the top of Kingsbury, joined Watada in providing an option for people to get a quick bite, especially those on the Nevada side where options are at a minimum.

"The Loft" opens in South Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Village

The Loft opened on December 16 in South Lake Tahoe, offering the area's first indoor year-round live theater which also includes a lounge and Italian dining room.

Designed by PR Entertainment, the $1 million complex features 107-seats, a separate dining area serving authentic Italian cuisine, bar and upscale lounge, all on the top floor of Heavenly Village above the movie theater.

Magic and illusion fans will appreciate "Magic Fusion," The Loft's show staring Tony Clark, winner of the coveted Magician of the Year award and numerous television appearances.

South Lake Tahoe Cancer League selling See's Candy for season

A sure sign of the holiday season is the opening of the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League's See's Candy Store. Their large selection of fine chocolates are the perfect gift for anyone on your list, and the best thing is that all proceeds go to help locals struggling with cancer.

The See's store is now open at the "Y" from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily until Christmas Eve, or as long as supplies last. It is occupying a vacant store near Starbucks and Beach Hut Deli in the Raley's center.

Man facing several charges after South Lake Tahoe robbery

South Lake Tahoe Police Department officers responded to a report of an armed robbery on Friday night at 7:10 p.m. in the area of the CVS Pharmacy and Tahoe Beach Retreat Hotel on Highway 50. Two adult males reported being robbed by a man brandishing a handgun and long-bladed knife.

As they arrived, officers received other reports of the suspect firing one round after robbing two other adult men at the rear of the hotel.

The Loft at Heavenly Village opening soon with magic, food and drinks

The Loft at Heavenly Village has been in the works for months, and now it's just a few weeks from opening day on December 15.

The new indoor, year-round live theater is in a newly created space above the current Heavenly Village Cinemas created by PR Entertainment. It will include a bar and lounge, 107 seat theater and Italian restaurant featuring Chef Lisa Devenchezi-Miller, who also owns of Capisce? in South Lake Tahoe.

Apple Hill, El Dorado wineries to fill up with Nevadans this weekend

While many may head into Carson City on October 31 to celebrate the state's birthday and parade, thousands of Northern Nevadans will be heading over the Sierra into El Dorado County to enjoy time at the county's winery and Apple Hill regions.

Why you ask?

Nobody really knows the answer, but the El Dorado Winery Association is embracing it.

"It took us several years to figure out why we were so busy on Halloween," said Paul Bush, the owner and winemaker of Madroña Vineyards.

For almost four decades, Halloween in South Lake Tahoe has been a party like no other with the Freakers Ball bringing people in from all over to demonstrate their creative talents in costume creations. South Lake Tahoe Mayor wants to revisit plastic bag ban for retail stores

On June 14, 2014, the South Lake Tahoe City Council voted to delay the implementation of the second phase of the plastic bag ban in the city. Originally slated to begin on October 15, 2014, the Council, by a vote of 3-2, moved the start date out one year to October 15, 2015.

Now that the second phase of the ban has started, Mayor Hal Cole wants to revisit that portion of the ban.

Cole said he wants to undo the ban on plastic bags for retail stores and asked for the topic to be on an upcoming agenda.

Community asked to give final input on Regan Beach redesign

The redesign of South Lake Tahoe's Regan Beach will affect visitors and locals for generations to come, yet very few have given input during the five month public meeting and planning process.

A final design was presented at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center on October 6, 2015 and approximately 25 people attended. In July there were 50 people at a public meeting where the top three designs for the beach were presented. In June, 24 people attended. An on ine survey was offered to the public for them to weigh in this summer, and the City received 320 responses.

Community comments combined into new Regan Beach plan

The City of South Lake Tahoe has been involving the community in several planning sessions, from the Tahoe Valley Area plan to the Recreation and Airport Master Plans. On Tuesday night, the latest plan for the Regan Beach area were unveiled to a group gathered at the South Lake Tahoe recreation center.

While attendance hasn't reflected a very large portion of the community, several dozen locals have played active roles at the meetings.

Tahoe WordWave: Inaugural literary festival gaining national attention

Get ready for Tahoe WordWave, a literary event the likes of which has never before been seen in South Lake Tahoe, and the rest of the country is taking note.

Modeled after San Francisco's LitQuake, organizers of Tahoe WordWave have gathered creative and inspiring writers, musicians, and performers from around the country to share their talents over a three day experience at Tallac Historic Site. The festival will be interactive, featuring readings, workshops, plays, open mics, guided hikes, and oral storytelling.

Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe breaks ground on South Shore

A ground breaking ceremony at Edgewood Tahoe brought out community and political leaders, all wanting the celebrate their new project, the Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe.

Rain brought the ceremony indoors, but spirits weren't dampened as people speaking at the ceremony highlighted the major impacts the new project on the state line will make on South Shore's economic and community revitalization, as well as important environmental and recreational enhancements in the area.

South Lake Tahoe community coming together for fire victims

The South Lake Tahoe community is doing what they do best, helping out others when needed.

With the Butte Fire forcing hundreds out of their homes while destroying over a hundred of them, and burning tens of thousands of acres, people in that community are in need of assistance.

Enter into the picture Monica Nichols and dozens of other locals as they spearheaded a donation drive and are now taking them into the burn area.

Pickleball enthusiasts want courts inside SLT recreation center

The rules are simple: Play singles or doubles on a 20 by 44 ft court. You use an underhand serve. Only serving team gets the points and the first team to 11 wins.

Community Outreach: During the month of August, we concluded our “Coffee with a Cop” program. Members of the public expressed support for the program but several asked for us to do the same thing at the Starbucks located at the “Y” to help give locals who frequent this location a chance to participate. This said, our plan is to do another session for a month during the winter at the “Y.” When we have specific dates and times, we will forward this information.

No matter how you slice it, Yelp reviewers dished up mountains of praise on South Lake Tahoe’s Base Camp Pizza Co., ranking the eatery fourth out of 50 “Daytime Hot Spots” nationwide in a user-generated survey of places to drink and dine.
