Earthquakes near Tahoe City, biggest measured 3.51

A series of small earthquakes have been centered around the Tahoe City, California area, the largest being measured at 3.51 early Thursday morning according to data from the Nevada Seismological Laboratory on the University of Nevada campus.

At 12:22 a.m. on July 26, the small trembler hit 5.8 miles NNE of Tahoe City at a depth of 5.7 miles.

Nine other, much smaller quakes have occurred in the last 12 hours, 17 total in the past 10 days. One year ago there was a little swarm in the same area, with 28 minor quakes ranging from a magnitude of 0.6. to 3.7.

South Lake Tahoe domestic violence offender sentenced to five years in prison

A 31-year-old South Shore resident Corey Anthony Denbae has been convicted of felony domestic violence and sentenced to five years in state prison.

On April 17, 2018, El Dorado Sheriff Deputies responded to a report of domestic violence on Grizzly Mountain Road, but Denbae had fled the scene.

South Lake Tahoe daycare staff member arrested on child sexual assault charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After an investigation into an allegation of ongoing child sexual assault at a South Lake Tahoe daycare center, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) have arrested the father of the operator of Pequeños Rascals Daycare.

On June 15, SLTPD first received information about the possible assault occurring at the center located at 3336 Sandy Way. Multiple victims came forward and reported a pattern of abuse dating back at least two years.

Auditions for Jesus Christ Superstar

Major damage prevented after bird nest catches fire on roof

A South Lake Tahoe home suffered minor damage Thursday night after a bird nest on a roof vent caught on fire.

At 6:34 p.m. a call was made to 911 about a fire in the 1100 block of Tata Lane. Two nearby residents spotted a fire on the eaves of the home, broke ,down a back door and were able to get much of the fire out with a fire extinguisher according to Battalion Chief Tim Spencer of the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department.

Amendments to VHR fines on horizon

South Lake Tahoe may not be known as the home of the $2,000 parking ticket after action taken by the City Council Tuesday.

National media attention spotlighted the fines ($1,000 to the renter and $1,000 to the homeowner) associated with violations of the vacation home rental (VHR) ordinance approved at the end of 2017 by the South Lake Tahoe City Council. This negative publicity has prompted some cancellations of tourist visits, or other changes to vacation plans, according to those in the industry.

Finally: 70s in the South Lake Tahoe forecast

A drying and warming trend begins today and lasts through Saturday with temperatures warming to well above average. A weak system is expected to bring an increase in clouds and minor breezes Sunday, with a few showers possible north of Susanville, but not down to Lake Tahoe. High pressure builds back in early next week with temperatures remaining well above average.

The forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight - Mostly clear, with a low around 30. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Thursday - Sunny, with a high near 64. Calm wind.

Conservancy grants funds to City for purchase of homes in Bijou Park Creek watershed

Two more properties in the Bijou Park Creek flood zone will be acquired by the City of South Lake Tahoe thanks to a $793,991 grant awarded by the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) this week.

This makes three properties that the City will purchase from willing property owners with grant funds provided through Proposition 1 and Proposition 50 funds authorized by the CTC. The two this week, oft-flooded and located at 3593 Shirley Avenue and 3590 Bill Avenue in South Lake Tahoe will join the parcel at 3747 Woodbine Road which was authorized to be purchased in September 2017.

Roundabout to be installed at deadly Carson Valley intersection

The intersection of State Route 88 at Centerville Lane will receive a compact traffic roundabout, and construction on it begins Monday, April 23.

From April 23 to 27, daytime lane closures from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. will take place with a pilot car leading traffic in alternating directions through the intersection. An approximately 10-day full closure of the SR 88 and Centerville Lane intersection will then begin Monday, April 30 at 10:00 a.m., with nearby detour available via Mottsville Lane and Foothill Road.

Man suffers life-threatening injuries after running into snow plow

A man from Reno, Nevada suffered life-threatening injuries on just after midnight on Saturday after his car hit the back of a snow plow on US-395 northbound near the Parr Boulevard

A preliminary investigation by the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) shows that a silver 2014 Nissan Sentra driven by a 44-year-old man was traveling northbound on US-395 in the second travel lane from the left. A yellow Mack Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) snow plow was traveling northbound on US-395 in the left-hand travel lane, ahead of the silver Nissan. The NDOT snow plow was performing

Men wanted in connection to El Dorado County homicide captured in Carson City

3/15/18 UPDATE: Two men arrested early Wednesday at a Carson City home have been identified and now face murder charges in El Dorado County, Calif.

Chase Bomar, 19, and Cody Bomar, 21, were taken into custody after Carson City Sheriff’s Office SWAT responded to assist El Dorado County authorities at a home in the 1200 block of Palo Verde Drive.

The men were wanted in connection to the fatal stabbing of Jeremy Fortuin, 42, of Pollock Pines. The stabbing happened on Pony Express Trail in Cedar Grove on the west slope of El Dorado County.

High speed pursuit ends in Carson City with suspect dead

A high speed pursuit on U.S. Highway 50 East through Lyon County ended when the suspect vehicle left the roadway near Flint and Highway 50 in Carson City. The suspect reportedly had a gunshot wound to the head when he was found by law enforcement officers and died at the scene.

The vehicle was a white Dodge Durango rental vehicle with California license plates. The vehicle pursuit, according to police scanner monitors, reportedly started at USA Parkway, then into Dayton and Mound House, exceeding speeds of 100 mph. No officers were injured.

Collision between snow plow and vehicle in South Lake Tahoe

There were no injuries in Sunday's collision between a Caltrans snow plow and a van in South Lake Tahoe.

At approximately 8:39 p.m. on March 4, 2018, a Caltrans snow plow assisting with the middle lane berm cleanup along Highway 50 in collided with a van.

SAR volunteers aid in search of Bay Area man missing in Yosemite

A weekend hike in Yosemite turned into a six-day long ordeal for a Bay Area man this week.

Oakland resident Alan Chow, 36, had his backpacking gear and wilderness permit when he set out on a solo hike Saturday, February 17 on the loop trail in Yosemite's northern wilderness area above Hetch Hetchy, about a mile from O'Shaughnessy Dam.

He became disoriented and lost his way.

Citizens assist Douglas County deputies after Walmart burglary

Two Reno residents have been arrested on multiple charges, and a warrant will be issued for a third after the Gardnerville Walmart shoplifting incident turned into a lot more.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. on February 17, 2018, deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) responded to the Walmart after three people were seen leaving the store with cameras and camera equipment inside a gray plastic tote. They were seen leaving in a gray KIA with Nevada plates driven by a female.

Nearly two dozen arrested in City multi-agency drug sweep

Nearly two dozen people were arrested during a monthlong Carson City area drug sweep that involved multiple agencies, the Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team announced Friday.

The Carson City SET, with the assistance from multiple agencies to include, the Department of Public Safety Tri Net Narcotics task force, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigation Unit and the Reno Police Department Street Enforcement Team conducted the narcotics suppression operation targeting those using and selling narcotics in the Carson City area.

Two Douglas County businesses cited for selling liquor to minors

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) went to 27 local businesses on February 1 to conduct an operation to make sure they were being compliant with state law with reference to alcohol sales to minors.

The following 25 businesses were checked and they successfully passed the alcohol compliance check and did not sell alcohol to a minor.

Domestic violence suspect apprehended after hours-long standoff

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - A violation of a restraining order in South Lake Tahoe Monday afternoon led to an hours-long standoff, closed off neighborhoods and subsequent arrest of a man with a long history of violence.

On Monday, January 22, at about 4:30 p.m., the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) received a call that Brandon Bannowski, 25, had violated a Restraining Order and allegedly entered the home of his ex-girlfriend, threatened her with a baseball bat and choked her.

Global warming continues: 2017 second warmest year on record

Earth’s global surface temperatures in 2017 ranked as the second warmest since 1880, according to an analysis released Thursday by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Earth's long term warming trend continued, with the average temperature last year was 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the 1951 to 1980 mean. Second only to the prior year, 2016, according to scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York.

Suspected illegal butane lab explodes in El Dorado County; 1 adult, 1 minor injured

On adult male and one juvenile were hospitalized after an explosion at a Camino, California home on January 1, 2018.

Initially, El Dorado County Fire responded to the 3:25 p.m. call of an explosion in a home in the 5100 block of Pony Express Trail. They then asked for El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office to respond to the scene for a possible butane extraction lab explosion.

Joshua Jamison, 39, was at the home when the explosion occurred and suffered burns to his face. He was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released.

14 arrested and one rescued during recent trafficking operation

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Department joined forces with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and El Dorado County District Attorney's Office in conducting "Victim Centered," to identify human trafficking victims and suspects.

They began the investigation by looking into escort/ dating sites on the internet and those ads coming from El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park and Placerville. The main purpose of the investigation was to identify the human trafficking victims who are being prostituted and to identify the suspects who are pimping and trafficking these victims in El Dorado County.

NDOT completes second season of SR 28 shared use path construction

The Nevada Department of Transportation this week completed the second construction season of the State Route 28 Shared Use Path, Water Quality and Safety Improvement Project near Incline Village. The entire project is anticipated to complete in late 2018 or early 2019, depending on weather.

Man arrested on felony DUI charges after crashing into two cars and light pole

A Fallbrook, California man was arrested in South Lake Tahoe Saturday after allegedly driving at a high rate of speed through Stateline while intoxicated before hitting two cars and a light pole.

Gardnerville man sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexual exploitation of a minor

Stephan L. DeGraffenreid will be spending the next 15 years in prison after being sentenced Wednesday by United States District Judge Howard D. McKibben.

DeGraffenreid plead guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a minor and two counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor in September. He was sentenced to the minimum number of years for those charges.

10:58 p.m. - Driving without a license - Stockton Ave - A TRAFFIC STOP WAS CONDUCTED ON A VEHICLE FOR AN INFRACTION. IT WAS LATER LEARNED THE DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE WAS UNLICENSED. THE 32-YEAR-OLD FEMALE DRIVER WAS LATER CITED AND RELEASED.

Fender bender sends one to hospital in South Lake Tahoe

A fender bender in front Stardust Lodge sent one to the hospital Monday evening. At approximately 5:21 p.m., the driver of a westbound Subaru was not paying attention and ran into the back of a pick-up truck.

Paramedics and a medic and fire crew from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded along with South Lake Tahoe Police.

The passenger in the truck was transported to Barton Hospital with minor injuries. Both drivers did not have injuries.

No one was cited and alcohol or drugs did not play a factor.

"Revenge Porn" gets man one year in prison

A man was found guilty of violating a domestic violence restraining order by a jury in El Dorado County on November 1, 2017.

Daniel Ramirez Rios, 43, violated a domestic violence restraining order and one count of intentionally distributing the images of the intimate body parts of another person – also known as “revenge porn.” Mr. Rios was remanded into custody after the jury’s verdict was announced.

Truckee men arrested on sex with minor charges

An ongoing investigation by the Placer County Sheriff's Office (PCSO), Tahoe Station and the PCSO Special Operations detectives has led two the arrest of two Truckee men on suspicious of having unlawful sexual relations with minors under the age of 16.

Christopher Anthony Renai, 23, was arrested on October 5 near his job in Truckee, and Skyler William Ford, 21, was arrested at his home October 16.

Both remain in custody at the Placer County Jail; Renai's bail is set at $100,000 and Ford's is set at $305,000.

Their next court dates are both set for November 8.

Three cited in underage alcohol sting in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Three local employees were cited by a recent decoy operation to catch people selling alcohol to minors.

On September 28, 2017, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, through a grant form the California Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC), conducted the minor decoy operation where minors under their supervision attempted to purchase alcohol from 19 different establishments.

One dead, others injured in motorcycle crashes on area highways

There was a fatal motorcycle crash on U.S. 50 about a mile east of Spooner Summit just before noon Saturday, September 30.

The east bound lane was closed for about three hours as emergency personnel responded to the scene and conducted an investigation. Their cars surrounded the victim, keeping passerby from seeing the scene.

The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) said it was a single vehicle crash and speed is believed to be a factor.

The accident happened about 11:54 a.m. No other details were available.

Single vehicle rollover in South Lake Tahoe

10:00 p.m. update: One man is behind bars on suspicion of driving drunk and causing bodily injury, a felony charge.

South Lake Tahoe resident Luis Lopez-Mora, 23, was arrested by the California Highway Patrol after he was released from Barton Hospital Friday evening.

As reported earlier, a call went into law enforcement about a person driving erratically on Pioneer Trail. Shortly after that call, the truck Lopez-Mora was driving failed to safely navigate a curve and his truck left the pavement and rolled down an embankment, landing on its wheels.

South Lake Tahoe woman dies in motorcycle crash

An afternoon motorcycle ride through Hope Valley turned fatal for a 64-year-old South Lake Tahoe woman on Sunday, September 17.

At approximately 4:48 p.m., the unidentified woman was riding her Harley Davidson westbound on SR-88 and slowing at the junction with SR-89. She was making a left turn onto southbound SR-89. At the same time, a 58-year-old woman from Gardnerville, Nevada was traveling eastbound on SR-88 in her Buick La Sabre. She was approaching the same intersection at approximately 50-55 mph.

LTCC holds State of the College address

Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is holding their State of the College address on Thursday, September 13 inside the Duke Theater starting at 8:00 a.m. with a breakfast reception.

LTCC President Jeff DeFranco will discuss where the college is today and where they are headed. A LTCC Alumni Panel will follow DeFranco, sharing their experiences on the South Lake Tahoe campus. Wrapping up the event will be Dr. Victor Rios, who will talk about how to change students' lives through meaningful contact.

El Dorado County man indicted for distributing drug that killed minor

Almost five years after a 15-year-old El Dorado High School student died after ingesting a designer drug, a Camino man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for his death.

Elijah Lee Richter, 26, is charged with knowingly and intentionally distributing 25i-nBOME, the drug that killed Alejandro Nunez Avila in a Pollock Pines home on on September 8, 2012.

Richter had been arrested at the time with Jesse Howard Roberts, then 21. Roberts has already convicted in the case and sentenced to six years. He currently is listed as being an inmate at Mule Creek State Prison in Ione, Calif.

Former Heavenly employee pleads guilty to child porn charges

Former Heavenly Mountain Resort employee Stephan DeGraffenreid pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of sexual exploitation of a minor and two counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor.

He faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison on each of the three counts.

South Lake Tahoe man sentenced to 56 months in prison

South Lake Tahoe resident Larry Martinez Guzman, aka Larry Guzman-Martinez, 33, was sentenced to 4 years and 8 months in state prison after pleading no contest to the charges of felony driving under the influence causing injury, felony assault, and hit and run.

Minor injuries in two separate Highway 50 crashes Sunday

Two separate minor crashes on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe Sunday caused some delays for drivers, but no major injuries were reported.

A driver near Glenbrook on Highway 50 was involved in a single-car rollover, causing damage to the SUV but only minor injuries.

In a second accident, not paying attention to the road ahead resulted in a collision at Marla Bay on Highway 50. Minor injuries in this crash as well.

Both crashes were cleared up fairly quickly.

No other information was made available by the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Lightning strikes tree as weather brings hail and heavy rain

A strong thunderstorm made its way through the South Shore Sunday at 2:10 p.m., leaving behind heavy rain, small hail, some minor flooding and a downed tree. The National Weather Service in Reno said wind gusts were up to 40 mph in some areas at the time.

On Oglala Street in Meyers, lightning struck the top of a tree and caused it to "explode" according to neighbors. Lake Valley Fire Department arrived almost immediately and there was no major damage, and no injuries.

Detwiler Fire cause released; Over 81k acres burned and now 97% contained

The discharge of firearms on public lands has been determined the cause of Mariposa County's Detwiler Fire which has destroyed 63 homes, 67 minor structures and 1 commercial building since starting July 16, 2017.

21 other homes and buildings were damaged.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) investigators said specifics are still under investigation.

The Detwiler Fire has burned 81,826 acres and was 97 percent contained as of 7:00 a.m. Saturday, August 5.
