High speed pursuit ends in Carson City with suspect dead

A high speed pursuit on U.S. Highway 50 East through Lyon County ended when the suspect vehicle left the roadway near Flint and Highway 50 in Carson City. The suspect reportedly had a gunshot wound to the head when he was found by law enforcement officers and died at the scene.

The vehicle was a white Dodge Durango rental vehicle with California license plates. The vehicle pursuit, according to police scanner monitors, reportedly started at USA Parkway, then into Dayton and Mound House, exceeding speeds of 100 mph. No officers were injured.

"At approximately 9:50 a.m., March 10, 2018, Storey County Sheriff's Office advised Lyon County they were in pursuit of a vehicle southbound on USA Parkway, and the driver was wanted out of California for parole violation," the Lyon County Sheriff's Office said Saturday. "Units of the Lyon County Sheriff's Office joined in the pursuit at USA Parkway and westbound Highway 50.

"The suspect vehicle failed to yield and led law enforcement through Dayton, where it ran the red light at Fortune and collided with another vehicle causing minor damage and no injures," LCSO continued. "The suspect vehicle did not stop and continued to flee from law enforcement.

"The suspect vehicle was finally stopped by the Carson City Sheriff's Office and NHP at Flint Road and Highway 50," the LCSO stated.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong released the following statement on the incident:

"Carson City Sheriff’s Office, along with other organizations, is investigating the pursuit of a vehicle from outside of Carson that ended in a crash just inside Carson City on Highway 50 at the Lyon County line," Furlong said. "It is reported that one officer (a) Carson City Deputy fired a single shotgun round after road spikes were deployed by another agency at the Carson Lyon County line.

"The suspect continued driving until he hit a road divider and spun off the highway," Furlong continued. "The suspect is deceased."

The deceased man's name and hometown has not been released.
