Over the past ten years, the South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge has donated 50 Christmas food boxes annually to local families, delivering the boxes in recent years to the South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center for distribution to families in need.

These boxes contained a complete Christmas Ham dinner for a family of four, plus enough extra food to last for several additional meals. But, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year the Lodge was unable to hold its normal fundraisers and food collections to put the boxes together.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Fire Foundation and Sysco joined forces to help communities impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, and South Lake Tahoe was recently a beneficiary.

The two groups gifted over $5,000 in relief efforts to the South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center for food for the families they serve.

This non-profit organization provides basic needs services, educational opportunities, family advocacy and bilingual counseling for children and adults in the South Lake Tahoe region.

Richard "Jay" Thoma of South Lake Tahoe will be presented a custom bike in Carson City on Saturday as part of the Combat Hero Bike Build giveaway.

Thoma, who has lived on the South Shore since 1989, lost his leg in an accident on an aircraft carrier in the Philippines in 1973 at the age of 18. Since then he has been walking with a prosthetic leg but never gave up the love of riding motorcycles.

For over 30 years, Bread & Broth has been providing meals at St. Theresa Church’s Grace Hall to all who come to our door. Over the years, the number of meals served weekly has changed, but currently, Bread & Broth (B&B) serves two meals, Monday Meal and Second Serving on Fridays, every week of the year. As an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, B&B relies on the generosity of time and monetary support from our local community to provide the wonderful and nutritious meals that are enjoyed by our dinner guests.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Lake Tahoe Community College Superintendent/President Jeff DeFranco has been selected for a prestigious honor from The Aspen Institute, an international non-profit organization focused on values-based leadership development in a variety of industries.

Between Horses and Humans (BHH) has been given another amazing gift by The Angel of Tahoe Lisa Maloff and her fierce protector Ricky Reich. We just wanted to say a big "THANK YOU" for the continued support of the children and horses at BHH. Between Horses and Humans is a non-profit organization teaching leadership through horsemanship to children dealing with difficult life situations and personal challenges.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tuesday's City Council meeting will include several items including a closed session at 8:00 a.m. that includes Liberty Utilities' claim that a City snowplow damaged a light pole, causing $56,883.41 in damage.

In 2007, just as the Angora fire was breaking, Amy Jackson hurriedly attempted to pack her belongings, not knowing what the outcome would be. As she did so, she remembered that she had promised a young 8th-grade boy that if he met her with his birth certificate verifying his age, that she would help cover his fee for AYSO soccer that year. She thought of what to do? I better go, she decided. As she approached their neighborhood in Bijou, she encountered not only the one boy she had promised to meet, but many other boys as well. She was in shock.

As an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, Bread & Broth is extremely grateful for the support we receive from many generous members of our community. From volunteering personal time to making donations, every means of support for B&B’s efforts in easing hunger brings relief to those who are food insecure.

“Tahoe/Douglas Rotary Club loves to support Bread & Broth and all its volunteers,” stated Rotarian Ashley Colvin while volunteering as an Adopt A Day of Nourishment sponsor crew member. “B&B is such a wonderful program that our community is lucky to have."

Fortunately for B&B, an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, we are the recipients of the very generous support of the Rotary club members which enables the program to provide meals and bags filled with food to those in need of food support in our community.

Bread & Broth was very fortunate to have the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club partner with us to help ease hunger at the September 3rd Monday Meal. The Rotary Club is dedicated to helping others and its members are involved in many community projects that improve the quality life for the disadvantaged. The club encourages its members to work side by side with the community in local serve projects and has signed up to host four additional Adopt A Days of Nourishment sponsorships over the next nine months.

The Last Response Memorial Fund invites the public to enjoy an evening of music by Grammy nominee Ty Herndon, Elvis Tribute Artist Clint Ingbretson, Mo'z Motley Blues, Canyon White, Wabuska Yachting Club, and Fate Awaits on August 25 at their inaugural Music Festival for Heroes.

This free event will be in the parking lot of Living the Good Life in Carson City at 1480 N Carson Street from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and the Master of Ceremonies will be KBUL 98.1's JJ Christy.

Speaker Glen Whorton of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society will speak on “The Prison in Nevada History” in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, July 7, at 10:00 am.

President of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society, Glen Whorton, will present a history of the Nevada State Prison from 1861 until its closing in 2012. The presentation will include its territorial origins, famous or infamous incidents, its wardens and inmates.

Author Nancy Raven will speak on her book A Postal Journey: Discovering Nevada Through Its Post Offices at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, June 2, at 10:00 am.

Upon Nancy Raven’s arrival in Nevada, a friend suggested Raven travel the state photographing each town, which she refined to Nevada’s post offices. Raven’s quest took her to every corner of Nevada, with her photographs, her art work and a song becoming the book A Postal Journey: Discovering Nevada Through Its Post Offices.

In honor of Month of the Young Child, Choices for Children held their 26th annual Provider Appreciation Breakfast on April 14 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course. Choices for Children would like to thank Pam West and her twin sister Katty for a fabulous presentation on Sing and Play the Sensory Way. Child care providers appreciated the access local professional development in a fun and engaging way.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Saint Joseph Community Land Trust (SJCLT) was awarded a Community Service Grant from the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe Foundation. The grant was in the amount of $1,800 and will be applied to our Motel to Housing Loan Program. SJCLT Board Members, Lyn Barnett and MaryAnne Brand attended the awards ceremony at a luncheon held in Harrah’s South Lake Tahoe.

STATELINE, NEV. - Whole Foods Market in Reno is donating 5 percent of their net sales on April 19 to the Tahoe Rim Trail Association. Funds raised at this event will be used to get mpre under-served youth out on the trail, make critical trail repairs, and help ensure the Tahoe Rim Trail System remains a world-class experience for all through simply grocery shopping. Stock up on all the essentials, build an epic trail mix in the bulk foods aisle, and enjoy a lunch or dinner buffet.

Many in South Lake Tahoe know native son Ryan Wallace, whether it's from his starting to wrestle at age 5, being a high school and middle school coach, or from when the community pulled together in 2014 to raise funds for his new prosthetic leg.

Entrepreneurs Assembly is holding their monthly workshop on Thursday, October 5 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Community College.

This non-profit organization is dedicated to the success of local entrepreneurs, including startups, existing businesses, and people working on a business idea. Each meeting centers on round tables in which entrepreneurs discuss their key challenges, facilitated by experienced mentors.

Entrepreneurs leave with their "marching orders" for the next 30 days. They meet the first Thursday of each month at LTCC.

Volunteers are needed for the 18th annual Markleeville Creek Day on Saturday, September 9. The Alpine Watershed Group is hosting the event which will focus on completing projects throughout the East and West Carson Watersheds in the following areas:

- Grover State Park - Native Garden and Weed Pull
- Bear Valley Trout Spawning Protection
- Markleeville Creek Heritage Park Enhancement
- Storm Drain Stenciling in Markleeville

Thirty kids from the Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club will get a special treat next week during the 28th annual American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe.

The South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center (FRC) is holding their 14th annual Cinco de Mayo Festival on Friday, May 5 starting at 5:00 p.m. at Heavenly Mountain Resort. The community is invited to join them for an "all you can eat" Mexican food buffet, dancing with live music and a fabulous raffle.

Tickets can be purchased at the center for $20 or at the door for $25. Children ages 6-12 are $10 and 5 and under are free. Raffle tickets for chances at prizes donated by local businesses are available for $5 each of 5/$20.

What does recreational cannabis mean for the Lake Tahoe community? A chance to discuss the passage of California's Proposition 64 and Nevada's Question 2 will be held on Wednesday, April 19 at the Tahoe Beach Retreat Conference Center from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This will be an installment of the Tahoe Regional Young Professionals (TRYP) Town Hall Series that focuses on bringing the community together for civic discussions.
