Tahoe Arts Project opens annual membership drive

The Tahoe Arts Project is holding their 2018-2019 online annual Membership Drive, and the community is invited to help the keep the arts aline in South Lake Tahoe. Their performances are an important part local children's education.

During this season they will be presenting four groups to the schools and community, two residencies with the Missoula Children’s Theater, and they have expanded their programming by adding:

- Trails and Vistas: Art and Nature hike at Sand Harbor for 3rd grade students
- ACT ONE: Theater program for Middle School students

Fire dangers prompt ban on target shooting in National Forest

Due to extremely dry vegetation and very high fire danger, recreational target shooting is prohibited in the Eldorado National Forest until at least October 9, 2018. In the Lake Tahoe Basin, it is not prohibited but they suggest those wishing to target shoot go to one of the legal ranges in Carson City or Gardnerville for safety reasons.

Janet Jackson brings high energy and endless hits to Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - Fans of pop star Janet Jackson have been waiting a long time to see her on tour, and after Friday night's concert at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys they can say it was worth the wait.

Jackson had to put a halt to her 2015 tour and have surgery, then her tour ended again in 2016 after she announced her pregnancy. Now she has hit the road with her long-awaited State of the World Tour.

Two months of concerts kick off August 1 at Vahalla Boathouse Theater

For the next two months, the Valhalla Boathouse Theater at the Tallac Historic Site in South Lake tahoe will be home to several concerts, starting August 1.

Will’s Kids for the Arts returns to South Lake Tahoe for 3rd year

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Now in its third year, Will’s Kids for the Arts is a FREE art fair for children on the South Shore, featuring arts and crafts booths and a performance by Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival’s D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program. Will’s Kids will take place on Friday, August 3rd W:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Valhalla Tahoe Estate. The performance begins at noon.

SLT Library hosting free outdoor concert with Jaguar World Music

Pitbull show at Harvey's outdoor arena a non-stop dance party

Entertainer Pitbull made his first visit to Lake Tahoe a memorable one for the thousands of fans who danced the night away as the rapper, singer, actor, producer performed hit and hit on Friday night at the Harveys Outdoor Arena for the latest of the Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series.

Pitbull, or "Mr. Worldwide" as he is also known, swaggered onto the stage in a way only he can and from the first beat everyone was out of their seat and they never sat again.

Bus service faces drastic change in South Lake Tahoe; Public meeting Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Public comment closes this week on plans released by the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) that address issues the agency is facing to be sustainable. Major changes are in store for riders.

Four plans were created as bus service cannot continue as it currently is due to several factors, including the cost of fleet replacement and improvement, funding availability and forecasted funds, regulatory compliance, and keeping and attracting drivers and staff.

Broadway in Blue: A Musical Revue opens July 5 at Boathouse Theater

Valhalla Tahoe is presenting Broadway in Blue starting July 5 and running two weekends. The show, a revue of contemporary and classic Broadway tunes performed by some of Lake Tahoe’s best singing and acting talent, was created by Gabriella Giocomo especially for Valhalla. Giocomo was one of three finalists in Valhalla’s WordWave One-Act play script competition in 2017. When she came for the stage reading hosted at the Boathouse Theatre she was inspired by the space and submitted the show in the winter of 2018 for review by Valhalla.

Jamie Anderson nominated for 7th ESPY award; Public invited to vote

Olympic Gold Medalist Jamie Anderson from South Lake Tahoe has been nominated for two more ESPY awards in a year dominated by snowboarders, at least in the Olympic and action sport categories. She is up against fellow Olympian Chloe Kim for Best Female Action Sports Athlete, an award Anderson won in 2012, 2014 and 2016, and nominated for in 2007.

Anderson is also nominated for Best U.S. Female Olympian, an award she previously won in 2014. She is up against Kim for this award as well.

ESPY stands for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly.

1,600 runners expected for 4th annual Rock Tahoe Half Marathon in Lake Tahoe

Young Colombian rider earns Leader Jersey by winning Amgen Stage 2

With just over 2k left to ride to the summit of Gibraltar Road, Team Sky’s 21-year-old Egan Bernal (COL) attacked and swiftly climbed away to a solo victory to close out Stage 2 of the 2018 Amgen Tour of California. Tao Geoghegan Hart and his Team Sky teammates set an unyielding pace all the way up the steep grade in support of lead rider Bernal to help launch him to his fourth victory of the 2018 season, shoring up the race lead as well as nearly all of the classification wins with today’s epic climb and overall performance.

It's showtime for South Tahoe Middle School and TAP

Young thespians at South Tahoe Middle School (STMS) have been working since March on Giants in the Sky, a musical and magical story about the world of giants who live in the clouds.

Tahoe Arts Project is presenting the play which is performed by ACT One, a new program for STMS South Tahoe Middle School students that helps fill a void for their hunger for creative expression, given the absence of drama and other arts programming available to students at a critical developmental age.

2018 Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre Festival schedule announced

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The coming months at the historic Valhalla Grand Hall, Grand Lawn and Boathouse Theater will be busy with a full slate of activities planned for the 2018 Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre Festival.

The festival is Valhalla Tahoe’s flagship event, a unique celebration of music, theatre and the visual arts. The festival is set against the magnificent backdrop of Lake Tahoe and the Tallac Historic Site. Looking forward to its 34th year, it is produced by Valhalla Tahoe.

The Festival begins in mid-June with events and activities that continue throughout August.

Amgen cyclists "racing" local celebrity Howie Nave

Lauren Hall and Lauretta Hanson with the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling team will be “racing” local radio host Howie Nave on the bike path at Kahle Meadow trailhead to Nevada Beach on Wednesday, May 9. They’ll meet for coffee at Clydes Coffee Roasting Co at 10:00 a.m. and will take off around 11:00 a.m. Public, media, cycling enthusiasts, community members, businesses are welcome to mingle for coffee as well as join them for a fun race/bike ride to the beach.

Tahoe Valley Thunderbird Choir shines at music competition

The Tahoe Valley Thunderbird Choir recently made their first trip to the Music in the Parks Choir Festival in Fairfield, Calif. Choir director Allyssa Little wanted the student singers to experience performing under pressure in the presence of top quality competitors.

It's showtime for the 35th consecutive year for Marcia Sarosik's Shining Stars

Over 200 dancers of all ages graced the stage at Harrah's Tahoe during each show of the Marcia Sarosik Dance Studio last weekend as the annual recitals opened up to full houses. The shows continued Saturday, April 28.

The opening night is still being talked about, especially the opening number, The Greatest Show on Earth, though details are being kept secret until all have seen the show. Other numbers include Put a Little Love in Your Heart, Catch a Falling Star, Sit Still Look Pretty, Bitter and Sweet Symphony, True Colors and Buenos Aires.

Opening night for Tahoe Valley production of The Jungle Book

This isn't your mother's school play. Tahoe Valley Elementary Performing Arts is presenting The Jungle Book to local schools, parents and the community this week, and the production shouldn't be missed.

Under the direction of Jack Suglian, a Tahoe Valley Elementary and South Tahoe High graduate and stage veteran, the 55 students have been in rehearsal since January, not only working on lines but also on 15 musical numbers.

The play is inside the schools "Thunderbird Theater."

Christening ceremony for Ms Lisa, the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue boat

In South Lake Tahoe, the name Lisa Maloff is synonymous with philanthropy. She has earned the name "Angel of Tahoe" through her large donations, including $10 million to Barton Memorial Hospital for their new Robert Maloff Center of Excellence (Wellness and Sports Performance Center) and $5.8 million to Lake Tahoe Community College for the Lisa Maloff University Center. To date, Mrs. Maloff has donated $35 million in the past four years.

Unity at the Lake guest to offer a Sound Blessing

Unity at the Lake welcomes back their long-time friend Rene Jenkins as he offers a “Sound Blessing” on Sunday, April 8 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at their new location at 870 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe.

This is a group sound healing ceremony which requires participants to simply sit or lie down and receive, using ancient indigenous instruments along with some sharing of their historic metaphysical attributes.

Review: Dinner theater in South Lake Tahoe a real treat

For a second year, the Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe has brought live theater to the Lake Tahoe Golf Course. This year, a production of Divorce Southern Style hits the stage created inside the clubhouse.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I received my tickets, but I was thoroughly impressed and the night was very enjoyable with a great three-course dinner and lots of laughs.

The golf course's brand new bar was unveiled on opening night of "Divorce," so it was the centerpiece before the food and entertainment. Beautifully done with copper and wood throughout.

Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 opens at South Tahoe High

The creative team responsible for a recent Broadway flop (in which three chorus girls were murdered by the mysterious "Stage Door Slasher") assemble for a backer's audition of their new show at the Westchester estate of a wealthy "Angel." The house is replete with sliding panels, secret passageways and a German maid who is apparently four different people -- all of which figure diabolically in the comic mayhem which follows when the infamous "Slasher" makes his reappearance and strikes again -- and again.

Conservancy approves funding for ED raise and several projects

During this week's California Tahoe Conservancy board meeting, funds were not only approved for the Greenway shared use trail in South Lake Tahoe, but also for grants to be used on the lake, a forest health project and a 10 percent raise for Executive Director Patrick Wright.

Former El Dorado County judge facing disciplinary charges

The Commission on Judicial Performance has initiated disciplinary proceedings against recently retired El Dorado County Judge Steve Bailey. Bailey is now seeking the GOP nomination for state attorney general.

Steven Bailey faces 11 counts of ethical wrongdoing dating to his time on the bench, including placing defendants in a private-sector alcohol monitoring program without disclosing that the provider employs his son, according to the judicial watchdog agency.

"No reportable action" in Monday's special SLT City Council meeting

The South Lake Tahoe City Council held a special closed session meeting on Monday to discuss matters surrounding City Manager Nancy Kerry.

The over two-hour meeting concluded with no reportable action, according to City Council.

"We will be providing no further comment," they said.

Letters: Modern day witch hunt in South Lake Tahoe

On February 8th, 2018 a South Lake news source, based on seven anonymous sources, destroyed City Manager Nancy Kerry’s reputation. As the former City Manager prior to Nancy Kerry, I know the challenges, rewards, and pitfalls of managing cities. Given the average tenure of a City Manager is 3-5 years, it is not uncommon for City Managers and City Councils to amicably part ways.

Special City Council meeting to decide Kerry's fate; Meston outlines plans

News spread through South Lake Tahoe this week that surprised and shocked many, the City Council's decision to put City Manager Nancy Kerry on indefinite leave. The council will be meeting in closed session on Monday, February 12, 2018 to discuss the situation. Their agenda item, "PUBLIC EMPLOYEE DISCIPLINE/DISMISSAL/RELEASE Pursuant to Government Code Section 54957(b)" starts at 9:00 a.m.

That section of code allows special and closed session meetings to consider the appointment, employment, evaluation of performance, discipline, or dismissal of a public employee.

Amgen Tour of California routes announced

The 2018 Amgen Tour of California has announced their race routes, giving cycling fans time to plot our their roadside viewing points.

The Women's Stage 2 and Men’s Stage 6 at South Lake Tahoe will both include iconic vistas, stunning lake views, highest summit in race history at Luther Pass, and the grueling Daggett Pass along Kingsbury Grade state Route 207 on May 18.

SLT City Manager on "indefinite leave." Fire chief steps in as acting manager

The South Lake Tahoe City Council announced today that City Manager Nancy Kerry is on indefinite leave. South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Chief Jeff Meston has been appointed as the acting City Manager.

Kerry has been with the City since 2008, working in various departments and moving into the City Manager position August 21, 2012

"City Council will not be making any additional comments to respect Ms. Kerry’s privacy," according to a press release issued Wednesday.

Grammy award winner Chris Stapleton headed to Lake Tahoe

On Sunday he won three Grammy's, and on Monday, Chris Stapleton announced the stops on his 2018 All-American Road Show and Lake Tahoe is on that list.

Stapleton, along with Brent Cobb and Marty Stuart, will be at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena on July 26, 2018. Tickets will go on sale Feb. 9.

Stapleton won the Grammies on January 28 for Best Country Album of the Year with his "From a Room, Vol. 1," "Broken Halos" as Best Country Song, and Best Country Solo Performance for "Either Way." He is also the Country Music Association Male Vocalist of the Year three years running.

Cascada de Flores brings the nostalgic song and traditions of Mexico and its neighbors into simple and beautiful arrangements that allow space for both improvisation and pure expression.

To the City, Snowglobe, and Community – As many of you know I am vocal critic of Snowglobe. Well after another year I feel like it’s kind of tradition for me to write my letter and vent about the event.
