Nearly two dozen arrested in City multi-agency drug sweep

The Carson City SET, with the assistance from multiple agencies to include, the Department of Public Safety Tri Net Narcotics task force, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigation Unit and the Reno Police Department Street Enforcement Team conducted the narcotics suppression operation targeting those using and selling narcotics in the Carson City area.
Pedestrian transported to hospital after being hit in Tahoe Keys intersection
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/15/2018 - 6:06pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - An early morning collision at the intersection of Venice Drive and Tahoe Keys Boulevard sent one to the hospital.
At 7:50 a.m. Thursday, February 15, a 16-year-old unlicensed driver hit a 94-year-old male pedestrian at the intersection of the two streets.
South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, JPA ambulance and South Lake Tahoe Police Department all responded.
The pedestrian was transported to Barton Hospital with a head injury.
According to SLTPD Lt. Shannon Laney, the driver is at fault.
Fatal fire in South Lake Tahoe

His former sister-in-law Mimi Bertrand told South Tahoe Now that it was Dean who died. His two adult children, Lori and Gregory, moved from South Lake Tahoe and now live in Grants Pass, Oregon.

8:00 p.m. update: The cause of the deadly fire in South Lake Tahoe today was the result of smoking materials on a couch. The deceased is a 58-year-old male. There is an ongoing investigation by the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Police departments. No name has been released.

Two injured in South Lake Tahoe collision
Submitted by paula on Sat, 02/10/2018 - 7:42pmSouth Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) had to use extrication equipment Friday after two vehicles collided at the intersection of 4th Street and South Avenue, sending two to the hospital.
At 4:35 p.m., both SLTFR and South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to the crash. A two-year-old had been sitting on the lap of the passenger in the red car show in the photos. While the driver and toddler were able to get out, the passenger had to be cut out, the safer of the options available according to SLTFR Battalion Chief Tim Spencer.

Man arrested after allegedly stealing car in Reno, leading officers to South Lake Tahoe

Raheem Ahmed Hanif, from Rodeo, California, was allegedly inside a 2017 Jeep Renegade when the Lithia Jeep dealer in Reno opened for business on January 31. Hanif then drove the car off the lot when the nighttime barriers were removed according to Officer Michael E. Brown of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in South Lake Tahoe.

Joining Forces is a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement program that promotes statewide enforcement in the areas of: DUI, distracted driving, seat belt, and speed and pedestrian safety. The goal of these enforcement campaigns is to save lives by increasing public awareness about the dangers of making poor choices while driving.

Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/30/2018 - 12:17pmA former motel maintenance worker at a South Lake Tahoe motel has been sentenced to 183 years to life for the brutal sexual assault of a 22-year-old Macedonian exchange student in 2015.
Manuel Ovidio Ramos-Munoz was found guilty in November, 2017 on seven felony counts, including kidnapping for the purpose of committing a sexual assault, as well as six additional counts and numerous special allegations relating to the subsequent sexual assault of the victim.
Transient arrested after man stabbed at South Lake Tahoe bus stop

At 5:33 p.m. Saturday, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a call of a stabbing at the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd and Emerald Bay Road.
Upon arrival they found Kiefer Chriss, 57, being held down on the ground by some Good Samaritans and a 27-year-old male stabbing victim.
LTUSD warns South Lake Tahoe residents of tutoring scam

The fake tutors are telling families that their child's school sent them. In return for the services they are asking for credit card numbers or cash.
According to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, a woman by the name of Marycarmen Estrada has contacted at least one local family to provide tutoring services.
Domestic violence suspect apprehended after hours-long standoff

On Monday, January 22, at about 4:30 p.m., the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) received a call that Brandon Bannowski, 25, had violated a Restraining Order and allegedly entered the home of his ex-girlfriend, threatened her with a baseball bat and choked her.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/07/2018 - 9:41pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - A man from Northern California is recovering after suffering from a medical condition that caused him to crash his Chevy Silverado pickup into a tree Sunday morning in South Lake Tahoe.
At 9:12 a.m. January 7, emergency crews responded to the crash site on Pioneer Trail near Needle Peak Road. South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue had to extricate the unidentified man from the truck.
The man, who is in his mid-40s, was alone in the truck when he had a seizure. Witnesses reported seeing the driver attempt to pull his truck off the roadway prior to the crash.
Suspected car thief leads police on chase from Carson City to South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/05/2018 - 10:07pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) attempted to pull over a vehicle in Carson City Thursday night, but the driver refused to stop and led officers on a chase until the car crashed in the El Dorado County portion of the South Shore, over 35 miles away.
NHP followed the car up Spooner Summit on Highway 50 to Stateline. Per protocol they won't engage in high speed chases so followed him until he approached Stateline. Troopers called ahead to South Lake Tahoe, advising police that the vehicle was headed in their direction.
"Smash and Grab" vehicle burglaries in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/02/2018 - 7:41pmIn a three-hour period on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, three vehicle burglaries occurred along Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe, one each at IHOP, Denny's and the Stateline Raley's.
All burglaries were a smash and grab where the perpetrator(s) broke the vehicle's windows and grabbed valuables from inside the cars.
The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) reminds everyone to not leave valuables in their vehicle, and to also keep eyes open and report suspicious activity. Also, keep homes and vehicles locked at all times.

The predominately under-30 crowd come from colleges and communities hundreds and even thousands of miles away to enjoy a specially gathered group of top artists in the electronic dance music (EDM) field.

Deadly holiday in Las Vegas: Two casino security guards shot to death

The killings at Arizona Charlie’s Decatur marked the fourth double homicide and the fifth multiple homicide investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department this month.
Since Dec. 22 alone, Metro has investigated 12 homicides, all but one resulting from gun violence. But over the same stretch, the valley has had 15 homicides, including the deaths of three people inside a North Las Vegas home Thursday.

On Thursday, South Lake Police Department (SLTPD) sent certified mail notices to permitted VHR owners who have had one or two upheld violations in the last 24 months.

They also located numerous items that may have been stolen, but were not previously reported. .
Retired South Lake Tahoe K9 Duke passes
Submitted by paula on Sun, 12/17/2017 - 9:48pmRetired South Lake Tahoe K9 Duke has passed away according to the South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association. During his years of service he was responsible for the seizure of almost half a million dollars cash and countless narcotics detection arrests. He had numerous street suspect apprehensions, none of which were ever challenged in criminal or civil court according to his handler, Tony Broadfoot.
Duke had been trained by the Dutch Police in Belgium prior to coming to South Lake Tahoe in December of 2005.

Callers are identifying themselves to potential victims as an employee of the IRS (Internal Revenue Service). These phony IRS Agents inform the victim they have a warrant for their arrest or owe taxes. This is a scam. Callers claiming to be from the IRS tell intended victims they must pay using a pre-paid debit card, credit cards or wire transfer. The scammers threaten those who refuse to pay with arrest, deportation or loss of a business or driver’s license.
Gardnerville man sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexual exploitation of a minor
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/29/2017 - 11:04pmStephan L. DeGraffenreid will be spending the next 15 years in prison after being sentenced Wednesday by United States District Judge Howard D. McKibben.
DeGraffenreid plead guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a minor and two counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor in September. He was sentenced to the minimum number of years for those charges.
Person of interest in Hard Rock Hotel murder arrested by UNR police
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/27/2017 - 2:44pmThe man identified as a person of interest in the October 3 murder of Kevin LeRoy Edwards at the Hard Rock Hotel Casino in Lake Tahoe was arrested in Sparks, Nevada on November 22, 2017.
Someone called in a suspicious person report to the University of Nevada (UNR) Police Department. They contacted Jose DeJesus Rodriguez-Quezada, 44, sleeping on the sidewalk near the UNR Agricultural Ranch area on East McCarran Boulevard.

South Tahoe Now has been warning people for years about renting both short-term and long-term homes through Craigslist, the online classified ad forum.
The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is warning potential vacation home renters that scams continue on Craigslist.

Champions Plaza “Spirit of Competition” unveiled
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/27/2017 - 8:15pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The long awaited 11 foot tall bronze sculpture "Spirit of Competition" perched on top of a 4.5 ton boulder was unveiled during a ceremony at Champions Plaza Friday.
Sculptor Gareth Curtiss transported his creation from his studio in Fortine, Montana just two days ago in the back of his van, early Thursday morning the bronze sculpture was picked up with a crane and placed on top of the boulder, bolted in and wrapped up for the ceremony.

The large bear got into the dumpster around 8:00 a.m. as staff was taking trash out on October 14, but once in he couldn't get out.
South Lake Tahoe man charged with burglarizing pizza restaurant

At 10:00 a.m., officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to an alarm at the popular restaurant located at 1168 Emerald Bay Road. Upon arrival they learned someone had gained entry through a window and left through a door, and that cash was missing.
Video surveillance showed them a suspect.

Witnesses reported that two Hispanic males in their 20’s with short dark colored hair were the occupants in the vehicle.
The gun used in the event appear to be a semi-automatic handgun.
South Lake Tahoe closer to new Vacation Rental Ordinance

"While tourism is the lifeblood in our town, the residents are the heart and soul," said SLT City Councilman Jason Collin.
Passionate testimony from all sides was presented at Tuesday's meeting as has been the case for the 20+ meetings on the subject of VHRs.

Three cited in underage alcohol sting in South Lake Tahoe

On September 28, 2017, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, through a grant form the California Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC), conducted the minor decoy operation where minors under their supervision attempted to purchase alcohol from 19 different establishments.
No injuries in two car collision in South Lake Tahoe

At 11:48 a.m. October 1, emergency personnel from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, Police Department and JPA ambulance responded to the area in between Motel 6 and Grocery Outlet.
The driver of a white Toyota Camry pulled out of Motel 6 into the path of a woman driving westbound in a tan Toytoa Avalon. The Camry driver was attempting to cross all westbound lanes to head east and did not see the Avalon.
