Aging and caregiver educational series in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Family Caregiver Support Program (FCSP) is bringing a free five-week-long Aging and Caregiver educational series to South Lake Tahoe from April 13 - May 11, 2020.

The series will provide instruction and support for people who care for, or plan to care for, a family member or friend aged 60 years or older.

The educational series will be held at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel, located at 4130 Lake Tahoe Blvd in South Lake Tahoe, on Mondays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the following dates:

Changes to how voters will vote in 2020: South Lake Tahoe vote center and drop box locations

With the March primaries just weeks away, voters will be considering not only their choices on the ballot but will also need to consider how they will cast their votes in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County.

With poor voter turnout, especially in South Lake Tahoe, and more registered voters choosing to vote by mail, the polling places set up on election days were not frequently used.

2nd annual Santa Fun Run on Ski Run to raise funds for SOS Outreach

Adulting 101 classes at South Lake Tahoe Library

The South Lake Tahoe Library will host a two-night Adulting 101 series in December for those ages 15 to 25-year-old.

Each night of classes will cover the basic skills of growing up and becoming adults. In order to create an environment appropriate for teens and young adults, age limits will be enforced. The classes will be from 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

On December 9, learn about and focus on financial planning. In this class, financial experts will teach the basics of budgeting, credit, and much more. Presented by Wells Fargo At Work.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Signs highlighting suicide awareness have been placed around the campus of Lake Tahoe Community College, all in preparation for the third annual Awareness Walk: Emily's Walk for Hope on Saturday.

Walk organizer Lisa Utzig Schafer of the Suicide Prevention Network got the signs up in time for the college's new student celebration. The group is inviting the community to participate in the walk that focuses on remembering those lost to suicide and to help end the stigma surrounding suicide.

Douglas County residents arrested after three-month-long narcotics investigation

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Four Minden residents were arrested after a three-month-long narcotics investigation into the trafficking of methamphetamine by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Street Enforcement Team (SET Team).

During the pre-dawn hours on Tuesday, September 10, SET was joined by members of the Sheriff’s Office Special Weapons and Tactics Team as well as the Tri-Net Narcotic Task Force as they served a search warrant at 1596 County Road in Minden, Nev.

Emily's Walk for Hope brings awareness to those lost to suicide

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The third annual Awareness Walk: Emily's Walk for Hope will take place on Saturday, September 21 at Lake Tahoe Community College. The Suicide Prevention Network invites the community to participate in a walk that focuses on remembering those lost to suicide and to help end the stigma surrounding suicide.

Emily’s Walk for Hope was founded in 2017 by longtime local, Susan Alessi. Susan is the mother of Emily Ann Alessi, born and raised in South Lake Tahoe who died by suicide in 2014.

Fatal DUI suspect makes Douglas County court appearance

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The man accused of causing the death of Carson City resident Hugo Parra-Solis was in Tahoe Township Court on Tuesday.

Dressed in his jail-issued jumpsuit and shoes, the chained Jerrad Dominguez appeared in front of visiting Judge Nancy Oesterle. He does not have an attorney and told the judge he was trying to secure a Nevada attorney. Due to a lack of counsel, Dominguez did not enter any pleas.

Zephyr Cove Tennis Club offers youth tennis class and camps

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. – Area youth are invited to participate in the Zephyr Cove Tennis Club's summer programs which include camps and a free tennis skill class.

On June 8, a free event at the courts will be designed as a refresher for those who have swung a racket before and a chance for newcomers to learn the basics. It is open to anyone ages 4-12. Voting centers coming to South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County, public input sought

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heading to the polls will soon have a different meaning to the voters of South Lake Tahoe and the rest of California as the one-day voting period ends and initiation of voting centers begin.

With the passage of SB450, the 2016 Voter's Choice Act, 11-day and 4-day voting centers are planned to begin in 2020 after being started in 2018 with pilot centers in five counties: Madera, Nevada, Napa, Sacramento and San Mateo. El Dorado County will start vote centers in the 2020 election pending approval from the Board of Supervisors.

Mooring permitting underway in Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif – New online permitting options are available for mooring permits at Lake Tahoe. The Lake Tahoe Shoreline Plan approved by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency in 2018 requires lakefront property owners, homeowners’ associations, and marinas to register all existing boat moorings, including buoys, boatlifts, and boat slips.

Area voters to decide new State Senator on Tuesday

On Tuesday, March 26, 2019, voters will be selecting their new District 1 State Senator, a vacancy created when Ted Gaines won a seat on the state Board of Equalization in November.

District 1 spans California’s northeastern corner from the Oregon border to Lake Tahoe, including some of the Sacramento area’s eastern suburbs. An eight-week course at Carson City's Western Nevada College campus will help participants develop more capacity to deal with short- and long-term stressors in life.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is starting March 26 and will meet weekly on Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with an all-day retreat from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on May 4. The cost is $365.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – With a critical increase in active shooter events across the country, the Tahoe Chamber is holding a Level UP Workshop on the subject Wednesday, March 20 from noon to 1:30 p.m. in their Stateline office.

Workplace violence affects about 2 million workers in the U. S. each year. With this violence continuing to pose a looming threat, active shooter training is essential for all businesses. Active shooter events most commonly occur in businesses - 45 percent, schools - 25 percent, and government facilities - 10 percent.
