SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra is asking the South Tahoe Community for help in gathering much-needed items for the Warm Room. With below-freezing temperatures ever night warm clothing and boots can help the local homeless population stay warm and dry and the Warm Room stocked with supplies.

The Kiwanians will be gathering donated items on Saturday, March 7 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the Tahoe Art League, 3062 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The month of February has been a fairly dry one but it may end with snow in the Lake Tahoe basin this coming weekend. After unseasonable warmth the past few days, expect a sharp change in the weather Saturday evening into Sunday as a powerful cold front sweeps across the Sierra and northern Nevada.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Thanks to the men and women of South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge #1632 and Bread & Broth Team #3 volunteers, a wonderful meal was served to all of the dinner guests who attended the Monday Meal at St. Theresa Grace Hall February 17. The Moose Lodge sponsored their annual Adopt A Day (AAD) of Nourishment by donating $300 to cover the costs of the food and associated expenses necessary to provide the hot, full-course meal served at the dinner.

This year, it's the hilarious new comedy by Matt Lyle, Barbecue Apocalypse. The talented South Lake Tahoe cast features Michelle Bennett, Brandon McCarthy, Thomas Lopez, Kevin Sommerfeld, Karen Fink, Kori Zwijacz and Jeff Whitt and it is directed by Dave Hamilton.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – On Tuesday, February 11, 2020, South Tahoe Public Utility District discovered food-grade oil in their Christmas Valley water tank during a routine inspection. Up to one gallon of food-grade oil leaked into the 200,000-gallon water tank due to a mechanical issue and the tank was immediately taken out of service. Results from the water samples collected from the top and
bottom of the water tank and two neighboring homes meet all drinking water standards.

There is no evidence that oil entered the water distribution system.

The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce (Tahoe Chamber) has announced its endorsement of Measure B and Measure M on the March 3rd Primary Election ballot. Both local measures address a well-documented need for investment in new equipment.

This letter is in response to Toni Hall and Tom Yant whose letters were printed on 2/14/20 (“Why I will be voting ‘No’ on Measure B” and “LVFPD needs to budget for equipment from its big lard pot”). I want to begin by saying YES on Measure B!

I have to wonder if either of them contacted Lake Valley Fire Protection District with their questions, as their information is misleading and incorrect. Our Fire District is available to talk with you about Measure B (530-577-3737), or you can go to their website (lakevalleyfire.org).

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A weak cold front moved over the Sierra early Sunday, making way for a dry front to move over Lake Tahoe. Expect cooler temperatures and drier conditions for much of this week. A new system is possible towards the end of next weekend.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno, current indicators point to a sharp frontal boundary associated with a tight pressure gradient. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The public is invited to an open house hosted by the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) on Thurdsay, February 20 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. They will be providing information and seeking public input on their annual California Department of Parks and Recreation Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) Division grant applications.

The OHMVR applications request funding for trail maintenance and operation of facilities for off-highway vehicle access in the Tahoe Basin.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As local residents and St. Theresa Church parishioners, Kevin and Jean Bauwens wanted to help those in need and decided that sponsoring a Bread & Broth (B&B) Adopt A Day of Nourishment would provide them with the opportunity to help feed those experiencing hunger in our community. So, on February 2, Kevin and Jean, along with their daughter, Carrie Bauwens, and granddaughter, Isabel Telles, hosted the Monday Meal at St. Theresa Grace Hall.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If the reading is verified, the wind gust of 209 mph recorded at Kirkwood just before 8:00 a.m. Sunday is potentially be a new California state record.

The winds throughout the Sierra have closed not only Kirkwood Mountain Resort operations for the day but also Sierra-at-Tahoe. Some lifts are on wind hold or closed at Heavenly Mountain Resort, Squaw Alpine, Northstar, Mt. Rose and others.

Exchanging their Heavenly Ski Patrol jackets for Bread & Broth (B&B) aprons, Patrick Chu, Colton Terry, Andi Bertolina, Abby Salter, Marissa Streck, and Mike Galgay joined the B&B volunteers serving a delicious hot meal to the dinner guests at the Monday Meal on January 27 at St. Theresa Grace Hall. It was a cold evening and the hot chicken noodle casserole, prepared by the talented B&B cooks and served by the Heavenly Ski Patrol Adopt A Day sponsor team members, was a hit with the dinner guests.

Members of the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT), which includes local, state and federal land management agencies, will continue prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks in the Tahoe Basin as conditions, staffing and weather allow. Smoke may be visible.

It is one thing to study history; it is another witness it. Visitors to the Nevada State Museum in Carson City this Tuesday, Feb. 4, will find themselves in history’s front row as the museum celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint. Just as it did 150 years earlier to the day, the Mint’s Coin Press No. 1 will be pressing silver coins, complete with the famous “CC” mint mark.

MEYERS, Calif. - The El Dorado County Department of Transportation (DOT) is asking voters in Meyers and the county areas of South Lake Tahoe for money to replace their aging snow removal fleet and equipment.

On March 3, voters will be deciding whether or not they want to pay $60 more a year via their property taxes to fund CSA3 (from Strawberry to Meeks Bay to South Lake Tahoe City Limits). Measure M, if passed, will supply an extra $540,000 annually for the sole purpose of buying and leasing snow removal equipment. The funds could not be used for salaries, pensions or any other purpose.

Bread & Broth’s Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) program provides community members the opportunity to partner with us in our efforts to serve a hot, nutritious meal to the less fortunate of our community. Providing a basic need is a way to not only ease hunger but also uplifts the lives and well-being of those who are struggling. STATELINE, Nev. - The public is invited to take part in one of several meetings over the next two weeks that will go over NV Energy's Natural Disaster Protection Plan (NDPP).

The public is invited to take part as the utility shares key elements of their draft NDPP and solicit feedback before it is filed with the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada by March 1, 2020.

Senate Bill 329 addresses how the utilities will mitigate and respond to wildfires, severe storms and other natural disaster risks in service territories.
