Two local Soroptimist clubs donate books to Camp Fire victims

The Soroptimist Club of South Lake Tahoe and Soroptimist Club of Tahoe Sierra joined together in gathering books to donate to young Camp Fire victims.

Club members donated dozens of books which were sent to the Colusa County Farm Bureau who held a children's book drive to benefit elementary schools and families in the Paradise area.

The Camp Fire in Butte County is the deadliest and most destructive fire in California history. Tens of thousands of people remain displaced after the November 8, 2018 fire destroyed 153,336 acres, 18,804 buildings and killed 86 civilians.

Soroptimists honor South Tahoe High and Whittell High girls

Ten senior girls at South Tahoe High School and Whittell High Schools were honored by the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe club on Wednesday for their service to the community and their leadership, athletic and academic achievements.

For over 30 years the club has honored local students via their "Women of Distinction" award program.

Soroptimist's Best of 2018 Restaurant, Brewery and Winery announced

Attendees at the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe's 48th annual Evening of Food, Wine and Beer Tasting voted for their favorite wineries, restaurants and breweries from the night at MontBleu on November 9, 2018.

Guests at the event had the opportunity to taste wines from over 30 different wineries, six breweries and 20 restaurants. Each guest voted for their favorite winery, restaurant and brewery.

Through generous contributions made to the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) club during their annual wine tasting events, the club has been able to give back to the local community over $1,040,822 in scholarships, awards and grants.

The Tahoe Women’s Community Fund (TWCF) will be celebrating two local women during their annual Membership Celebration Dinner on Tuesday, October 30, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Tahoe Beach Retreat. Soroptimists of Tahoe Sierra deliver 60 backpacks full of school supplies

Sixty South Lake Tahoe students will be going to school in style this month after receiving a fully stocked backpack from the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club.

This week, club members dropped off 20 backpacks at each Live Violence Free, Boys and Girls Club, and Tahoe Youth and Family Services.

Jansport donates the backpacks each year and SITS members purchase the school supplies to go inside.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe has 60th Installation of Officers luncheon

The 60th installation of Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe Foundation officers combined a patriotic 4th of July theme and America’s signature game, baseball, in a lighthearted ceremony at Harvey’s convention center on June 27, 2018. It began with photographs of the Club’s 1964 fundraising baseball game between Soroptimist and Rotary of South Lake Tahoe, followed by clips from the legendary Abbott and Costello film “Who’s on First.” The tables were decorated with cups of peanuts and Cracker Jacks; the officers to be installed in baseball shirts and hats.

SLT Soroptimist members teach local youth 'A Fighting Chance '

Members of the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) spent the month of May teaching the program, A Fighting Chance, to students at Bijou Elementary, Sierra House Elementary and Tahoe Valley Elementary.

Soroptimists of Tahoe Sierra give away 3,200 books to local students

The Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra club members got together this week to give away 3.200 books to K-8 students in Lake Tahoe Unified School District, and at Zephyr Cove Elementary and Whittell High School.

This is an annual project for the club, spearheaded by long time member Cookie Rork. Literacy is a key goal of the club, and a book bag and book to take home for the summer encourages reading for fun.

Teachers provide the club with individual reading levels of their students and the orders are filled.

Mt. Tallac High thanks many for their 2017-18 successes

It is with much gratitude that we give a shout out to our many guardians and community partners at Mt. Tallac High School.

John Marchini and South Tahoe Refuse never fail to keep us fed and jump in when we have an unfulfilled need.

John McDougall is an amazing example of what it means to pay it forward. He provides us with not only Pay it Forward grants and scholarships but he is also on the constant lookout for opportunities and benefits to our students.

Harrah’s /Harveys provides job training, support and meals to create contributing citizens for our community.

Four vying for El Dorado County Supervisor, District 5

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – On behalf of Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH), I would like to thank our community for its support during the third winter season of the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room project. Our organization received donations from over 150 different individuals and businesses and benefited from 64 volunteers who provided over 675 volunteer hours in the Warm Room.

Grant awardees to be celebrated at Tahoe Women's Community Fund Gala

The Tahoe Women’s Community Fund has invited the community to join them at their annual Grants Gala to celebrate the 2018 grant recipients as $68,000 is distributed to 13 non-profit organizations in the South Shore community.

The evening will also feature short presentations from the 2017 grantees on how they spent the collective funding this past year.

The community of South Lake Tahoe lost a beloved member when Jean Gurney passed away on April 24, 2018. Like Lake Tahoe, Jean made people feel relaxed, elevated, and happy.

Jean was born on May 31, 1945 in Longview, Texas, to Viola and Frank Gurney. She spent her formative years in Massachusetts with her parents and sister Ann, and graduated from Minnechaug Regional High School in 1963.

Mother's Day Diaper Drive for month of May

Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra fundraiser Saturday: Find out where donations go

Many people donate both money and auction items to the Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra club for their annual Elegant Evening which occurs on Saturday, April 21. What many don't know is where those donations go. There was question recently in the community about donations, so the club wanted to clear up any misunderstandings.

The club recently created a diagram to better explain where each penny goes as they don't have must left over funds after they issue scholarships, grants and other forms of financial support.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Saint Joseph Community Land Trust (SJCLT) was awarded a Community Service Grant from the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe Foundation. The grant was in the amount of $1,800 and will be applied to our Motel to Housing Loan Program. SJCLT Board Members, Lyn Barnett and MaryAnne Brand attended the awards ceremony at a luncheon held in Harrah’s South Lake Tahoe.

SITS throwing the party of the year: 2018 Elegant Evening

The evening's festivities start with a 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. cocktail party and social time, moving to a seated dinner from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and dancing all night with Trey Stone until 10:30 p.m.

Kudos: Drug Store Project successful due to community partnerships

If you had walked onto the LTCC campus on Tuesday, April 3, you would have never guessed that there were 325 6th grade youth and 220 agency and volunteer workers throughout the corridors, all learning information on how and why to keep themselves safe from drugs. “Choices, what are yours?” was the theme of our efforts in keeping our youth drug free. With the country’s attitudes and norms about drug use changing, times are even more difficult for our kids.

Tahoe Women's Community Fund announces winners of $68,000 in grants

The Tahoe Women's Community Fund (TWCF) has announced the non-profit organizations on the South Shore who have been selected to receive grants in the amount of $68,000.

During their 2018 grant cycle, over 25 organizations applied for grants and 13 of them are being supported by TWCF and will be honored during their Grants Gala
on Wednesday, May 16 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Tahoe Beach Retreat in South Lake Tahoe.

Energy reignited for 'A Fighting Chance' child safety program in Lake Tahoe schools

Jaycee Lee Dugard was just 11 years old as she walked to the bus stop on the morning of June 10 in 1991 when she was abducted by two people. The Meyers and South Lake Tahoe community joined law enforcement in searching for the missing girls. As days turned into weeks, and then eventually years, parents searched for ways to teach their own children about safety and abduction.

South Shore non-profits receive $51,000 from American Century Championship

American Century Championship continues to impact the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, even months after the annual tournament is over. Since its inception in 1990, the tournament has donated more than $4.5 million to local and national non-profits.

On Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Investments gave 30 local organizations checks in the amount of $500 to $5,000 to help them serve the community.

Wendy Shehadi 1941-2017

Former South Lake Tahoe resident Wendy Shehadi passed away on October 19 2017 at the age of 76 in Las Vegas. Wendy is survived by her husband Dick; sons Mark and Scott; guardian son Mike Cokeron; grandsons Michael and Ryan Shehadi; brother Dr. Richard Rupp; sister in law Louise Rupp; brother in law Michael Shehadi; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Lake Tahoe non-profits invited to apply for $51,000 in grants from American Century Golf

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority has opened the 2017 American Century Championship grant period, encouraging South Lake Tahoe non-profits to apply for a portion of $51,000 to be given to the community.

To the community:

I am so proud to have been part of the Bi-State Women's March on Saturday. And I am proud that Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe sanctioned the opportunity for 500 women, men and children to march, not as a protest, but in unison to affirm that "women's rights are human rights".

Snow doesn't stop supporters as South Lake Tahoe march draws 500

"This is incredible," said Heddy Kaufer of South Lake Tahoe as she joined an estimated crowd of 500 men, women and children for the Bi-State Women's March on Washington Lake Tahoe.

Like millions of others who marched around the world on January 21, the festive South Lake Tahoe group walked a three mile route from the Hard Rock Lake Tahoe to the Senior Center in support of not only women's rights, but all human rights.

As the long line of walkers were greeted by honks from cars, they chanted "Love, Not Hate, Makes America Great!"
