South Lake Tahoe Library: Book sales canceled

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - To our South Lake Tahoe Library Friends and Community, Thank you for your patience as the Friends of the Library have been working with Library staff and the El Dorado County Public Health Services to continue our book sale events at the Library. Unfortunately, due to weather and grounds concerns and also increasing Covid-19 virus cases in the area, we are canceling our Saturday, November 21 sale and suspending book sale events until the weather warms or we can go back inside. As conditions change, we will let you know and welcome your participation.

SLT Outdoors Friends' Book Sale

The South Lake Tahoe Library is holding a parking lot/sidewalk book sale on Saturday, November 14th from 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tables will be set up with a great selection of books to choose from.

Prices are only $5 a bag and $1 per large, coffee table books. Great selection for fireside reading this winter.

For the health and safety of all, masks will be worn, entry will be monitored to one person (or family group) per table and hand sanitizer will be available. At check-out, correct change is appreciated.

Self-guided tour of 56-acre project available Monday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In an effort to get more members of the public involved in the process a walking tour map of the 56-acre project area in the middle of South Lake Tahoe has been created.

South Lake Tahoe Library hosts virtual author talk with Kathryn Reed

South Lake Tahoe Library thanks all for successful summer program

The South Lake Tahoe Library just wrapped up our Summer Reading Challenge, which encouraged children, teens, and adults to read all summer long. As with most things, this year looked different than past years with the entire program being moved online.

Although we had fewer participants, El Dorado County patrons still logged almost 20,000 books and earned a total of 872 prizes!

Kudos: Community thanked for participation in drive-thru Grab Bag Book Sale

Dear South Lake Tahoe Community, I write this letter of gratitude on behalf of the Friends of the South Lake Tahoe Library. On August 15th, we hosted our very first ever Drive-thru Grab Bag Book Sale. The traditional book sales are our biggest fundraisers and due to CDC restrictions, they are just not possible.

This new format was uncertain but you rose to the challenge. You generously donated books to be sold and you embraced this unique event making it a huge success. Thank you sincerely for being there for the Friends and for your library.

South Lake Tahoe Library "Drive-Thru Book Sale"

The Friends of the Library's first ever "Drive-Thru Book Sale" will be held on Saturday, August 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Library. Come to the library's parking lot, drive through to the back parking lot and pick up bags of books, $5 a bag, packed with at least eight (but probably more) books of a certain category. A masked worker will deliver the appropriate bag to you or your trunk. Hand sanitizer will be used after each transaction.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Library is continuing their summer events even though they cannot present them in person. On Friday, July 17 at 2:00 p.m., join he Fratello Marionettes on the library's Facebook page to see the performance of the classic fairy tale, The Frog Prince.

Outdoor performances have always been part of the Summer Reading Challenge but due to current circumstances, all performances have been moved online.

Library presents virtual magic show as part of Summer Reading Challenge

The South Lake Tahoe Library will host Magician Brian Scott online via Zoom and Facebook Live on Friday, July 10 at 2:00 p.m. Participants will enjoy fun, silly magic on the other side of the screen, as well as learn how to perform a few tricks of their own!

Grab a deck of cards, a dollar bill and a quarter and you will be ready to perform magic too. Perfect for all ages.

South Lake Tahoe Library reopens with reduced hours

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Library has reopened. On Thursday, June 25, the library opened its doors to the public for the first time since March closures due to the coronavirus.

They have temporarily reduced hours and implemented new protocols to keep staff and the public safe.

Hours:
Monday - 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Tuesday/Wednesday - 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Thursday - Saturday - 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Closed Sunday/Monday

Barton Foundation to give away $100,000 in local grants

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Barton Foundation began accepting applications on June 15 from local nonprofit organizations for this year’s $100,000 Community Health Grant program. Area service groups and organizations that share Barton Health’s commitment to improving community health and well-being are encouraged to apply online at bartonhealth.org/foundation.

Applications will be accepted through June 30, 2020.

Wild Things, Inc. performance hosted by South Lake Tahoe Library moved online

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though they have been offering online services during the COVID-19 spurred closure, the South Lake Tahoe Library knows how much people enjoy a good book and turning the pages of excitement, knowledge, passion, and interest.

South Lake Tahoe 8th grader makes bands on his 3D printer for nurses and other essential workers

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Besides at-home school and getting some outside exercise, an 8th grader from South Tahoe Middles School (STMS) has been making plastic bands on his 3D printer to help ease elastic band pressure on facemasks for healthcare staff and other essential workers.

South Lake Tahoe library offering story time and other digital services while closed

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though the El Dorado County library in South Lake Tahoe is closed to the public to comply with social distancing requirements, many services including storytime are offered online.

Library cards that are due to expire have been extended. All books due during their closed times will be accepted after reopening with no late fees. Their drop box is closed so no books can be dropped off.

All due dates have been extended to May 29, 2020.

Census letters to be mailed out this week in South Lake Tahoe and around the country

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Starting Thursday, residents will begin to receive an initial invitation to respond to the 2020 Census.

Depending on how likely the area is to respond online, households will receive either an invitation encouraging them to respond online, by phone or on a paper questionnaire.

Strong early voting in El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County voters have historically been a mail-in ballot voter, with about 80 percent of those registered putting their ballot in the mail.

So far, over 34,000 ballots have been received by the El Dorado County Elections Office and tabulated. This is about 35 percent of the 124,353 registered and eligible to cast their vote in this primary election.

Election update: Some El Dorado County ballots can still be changed

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - With three candidates dropping out of the presidential race just before Super Tuesday, many wonder what happens to their vote if it were for Styer, Buttigieg or Klobuchar.

If a ballot was mailed in and counted, whomever one voted for must remain the same.

DAR hosting Meet and Greet in South Lake Tahoe - Canceled

THIS EVENT IS CANCELED. Lake Tahoe Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is hosting a Meet & Greet on Saturday, March 28, 2020, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This will be held at the South Lake Tahoe Library. Women interested in DAR membership are invited to come meet DAR members and to learn about what is happening in today's DAR.

Founded in 1890, the Daughters of the American Revolution is a non-profit, non-political women's service organization for women ages 18 and over who descend from American Revolutionary War ancestors.

Changes to how voters will vote in 2020: South Lake Tahoe vote center and drop box locations

With the March primaries just weeks away, voters will be considering not only their choices on the ballot but will also need to consider how they will cast their votes in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County.

With poor voter turnout, especially in South Lake Tahoe, and more registered voters choosing to vote by mail, the polling places set up on election days were not frequently used.

Badges and Books: Holiday Edition at SLT Library

It's time once again for Badges & Books, and on Saturday, December 21, the theme is "Holiday Style," complete with Officer Santa Claus!

Kids will read with officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department at the library starting at 10:30 a.m. They will read a special story with local law enforcement and learn what they do in the community.

Adulting 101 classes at South Lake Tahoe Library

The South Lake Tahoe Library will host a two-night Adulting 101 series in December for those ages 15 to 25-year-old.

Each night of classes will cover the basic skills of growing up and becoming adults. In order to create an environment appropriate for teens and young adults, age limits will be enforced. The classes will be from 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

On December 9, learn about and focus on financial planning. In this class, financial experts will teach the basics of budgeting, credit, and much more. Presented by Wells Fargo At Work.

South Lake Tahoe Library display celebrates 100 years of the American Legion

The South Lake Tahoe Branch of the El Dorado County Library will feature a display celebrating and honoring 100 years of the American Legion through November and December 2019.

The centennial display includes memorabilia from local American Legion Post 795, Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary.

The display can be viewed during open library hours Monday through Saturday. The library is located at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe.

Barton Foundation awards $50,000 to groups focused on community's health needs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Fifteen local health programs offered by nonprofits and agencies in the South Lake Tahoe area have been awarded grants by the Barton Foundation. A total of $50,000 was distributed among the groups to aid in their efforts to address the community’s most pressing health issues.

During the 2018 Barton Community Health Needs Assessment, the top health issues identified in the South Lake Tahoe community were access to care, mental health, and substance abuse.

South Lake Tahoe Library thanks the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition

The South Lake Tahoe Library would like to give a huge “Thank you!” to the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition for facilitating the installation of a new bike repair station out front of the library. It’s an awesome addition and has already been getting a lot of use. Next time your ride needs a little TLC, stop by the library and check it out!

National Night Out celebrated in South Lake Tahoe

National Night Out is held across the country on the first Tuesday of August and is a time for the public to come together to learn how to be safer as a community. This year in South Lake Tahoe it was held at Bijou Elementary and had multiple agencies interacting with youth and adults with hands-on exhibits and activities.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The University of California Master Food Preserver Program is returning to the South Shore with their Vegetables: Preserve & Serve class on Tuesday, June 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Library.

UC Master Food Preservers will explain each step of canning, dehydrating and freezing as methods of preserving vegetables to use throughout the year. This follows up their June 3 class on preserving fruit.

Free Parenting Class by HUB5 in South Lake Tahoe in June

Learn how to preserve fruits and vegetables in South Lake Tahoe classes

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The UC Master Food Preservers are presenting two classes at the local library this June in food preservation. Teachers will be explaining each step of canning, dehydrating and freezing as methods of preserving fruit and vegetables to use throughout the year in your family’s meals.

The first of the fruit and vegetable preservation classes will be Fruit: Preserve It; Serve It class on Monday, June 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and the second will be their Vegetables: Preserve & Serve class on Tuesday, June 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Digital summer resources for students (and their grown-ups)

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Reading can be enjoyed by all South Lake Tahoe students this summer, even without stepping into the library. Summer is a great time to keep Reading and learning and be prepared for fall.

Library cards can be used online for ebooks and downloadable audiobooks whether you're in town, at grandma's house or on vacation somewhere across the globe.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Tahoe Women’s Community Fund, the South Lake Tahoe Library was able to purchase over 130 new Spanish and English ebooks and downloadable audiobooks to support students.

Reno Now & Then at the SLT Library

El Dorado County Sheriff D'Agostini to speak in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The public is invited to join El Dorado County Sheriff John D'Agostini as he presents "Criminal Activity: Awareness, Reporting & Prevention" on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Library.

He will discuss topics the South Shore community is interested in including homelessness, crime trends and the most common financial scams targeting our communities and ways to avoid falling victim to scammers.

In addition, the Sheriff encourages questions from the audience on any other subjects that are of concern.

Businesses closed Monday in South Lake Tahoe due to weather

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe-area El Dorado County government offices will be closed Monday, February 4 due to weather. This includes the South Lake Tahoe Library.

Schools in South Lake Tahoe, Truckee Tahoe, Incline Village, Zephyr Cove will also be closed. Lake Tahoe Community College is closed.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort is closed.

Due to weather and road conditions, TTD transit routes 19x and 22 are canceled for the day, February 4, 2019.

Dance Classes at the Marcia Sarosik Dance Studio are closed today.

Office and business closures in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All El Dorado County facilities in South Lake Tahoe are closed for Thursday, January 17 due to inclement weather. This includes the South Lake Tahoe Library.

Due to a blizzard warning and high winds, both Snowmobile Tours and MS Dixie II Sightseeing Cruise has been cancelled for today.

Tahoe Toys & Treasures is closed.

El Dorado County office of Education is closed, which is a county office, but most know it as Head Start and Early Head Start.

Volunteers for Bread & Broth 4 Kids: Food bags will be packed on Friday morning at 8:45 instead of Thursday.

Community invited to provide input on Mental Health Services Act annual update

The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Behavioral Health Division invites the public to provide input on the Fiscal Year 2019-20 Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) Annual Update. Community members can provide input by attending an upcoming community meeting or by submitting an online survey or an email.

South Lake Tahoe Library now open six days; Celebrating with party

On Monday, December 3 at 3:00 p.m. the community is invited to the library to celebrate with refreshments and a Monday Maker activity.

The celebration will continue all week:

- Tuesday will feature their Spanish language early literacy program for infants, Mama Gansa Anda Suelta, as well as their community-led Chess Club.
