We all have regrets. Well, most of us anyway. Maybe (just maybe) there is someone out there that has walked on this planet and felt good about all of the choices they made from birth to death (but it is hard to imagine). And I’m quite aware that there are some that make loads of bad choices but don’t know how to take responsibility for them and instead blame others for why their life isn’t working. (This is an issue worthy of later discussion).

It’s that time of the year to pick up your copy of a widely-distributed and widely-read annual publication known as “Fishing The California Alps.”
That outdoor newspaper is your personal guide to the fishing, camping, sightseeing and vacationing world in our general area and it has many, many pages of in-depth information provided by lots of experts in their specific areas of knowledge and experience.
Be sure to use this 2012 edition as your handy and ready-to-use guide on what, when, where and how to enjoy the Great Outdoors.

For the past few weeks I have started and stopped writing this column. I've had some real inspiration, awoken with “brilliant” ideas in the middle of the night only to sit down, start writing and get absolutely nowhere. My virtual trashcan seemed to be getting full while the ideas seemed empty.

With Saturday's opening day of fishing on California waters, you'll need to possess the proper 2012 license to be legal. You can purchase the license and any applicable stamp(s) at a number of South Lake Tahoe area outlets or on the Web. With the ski and board season winding down, it’s almost time to catch some fish in the High Sierra once again.
On Saturday, April 28 the 2012 fishing season will open for all applicable lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers in California. The season will then remain open until Thursday, Nov. 15.
If you’re new to the Lake Tahoe and Sierra, here’s some information that can be useful if you would like to fish on that Opening Day or the entire opening weekend:

So here it is. Valentine’s Day. A day of love and romance for some. A dreaded day of heartache and bitterness for others. Some of you may receive cards, flowers, a phone call from a friend, a nice romantic dinner or even a marriage proposal. Some of you will spend the day alone, avoiding the satin heart mayhem and gooey sentimental couples that inevitably come with the traditions of February 14th.

With the arrival of winter weather in this area, we certainly have plenty of water frozen on our creeks, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs.
And, that ice covering effectively inhibits your opportunity to catch fish…unless you are an ice fisherman.

As I look forward to the year of 2012 with high expectations, hopes and dreams, this is a good time to reflect back on some selected personal memories from the rapidly ending year of 2011. Here are my top memories:

On Wednesday morning Oct. 19, Elaine and I went fishing at Lake Tahoe for Mackinaw lake trout with our longtime good friend and sport fishing guide, Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters outfitted South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
“Gino” has fished Tahoe for some thirty years (the last 13 years as a fishing guide) and is one of the top, if not the top, guides at that lake.

UPDATE:(October 18, 12:30pm) The vote on the Tentative Agreement between General & Public Works and the City of South Lake Tahoe has been postponed to give both parties more time for review. The employee group will meet and vote on Friday, October 21. City council will then vote on the agreement at the next meeting which has not yet been scheduled.
"It was just too fast," said City of South Lake Tahoe Human Resource Director Janet Emmett. "It was obvious that they needed more time to educate their members and then we would need more time to review the agreement as well."
Meanwhile, the city council meets at 2pm today for the special budget meeting, and is expected to approve the layoff of 19 employees. This number is lower than the original proposed cuts in staff, and will spare the Streets Department from losing more than half of its workers.

With winter weather creeping around the corner, and with many California waters scheduled to close for the year on Nov. 15, this is my annual reminder for those fishermen who plan to hang it up for the year after a few more fall casts.
Many of you prefer not to fish during the winter months or have absolutely no interest in ice fishing, so this article is specifically written for you. (Hmmm, come to think of it, this article is also worth reading by those of you who plan to continue fishing until the weather warms back up, again).
