LTCC women's soccer team win playoff game; Host round two Tuesday in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's on to the second round of playoffs for the Lake Tahoe Community College women's soccer team. They took care of 18th seed West Valley College at the South Lake Tahoe campus on Saturday, winning the game 4-0.

The top-seeded Coyotes will host the City College of San Francisco Rams (No. 8 seed) on Tuesday, November 26.

Game time is 12:00 p.m.

Tickets for LTCC students, staff, faculty, and all senior citizens are $8. Everyone else is $12. Cash only, please.

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

It was an eventful week for students and staff at South Tahoe High School. With unfortunate news, fundraisers, and the end to successful “fall sports” seasons. STHS is getting ready for Thanksgiving break.

On Campus

Thursday morning, woodshop teacher, Nathan Crnich was arrested at the STHS campus on sexual misconduct charges. While news was shocking to many, students said they feel safer.

LTCC Coyotes host the first round of playoffs in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) women's soccer team will be hosting the first round of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) NorCal playoffs on Saturday, November 23.

The LTCC Coyotes ended the regular season as the #1 Junior College Division III team in the country with their record of 18-0-2, a spot they held for weeks. This has been the second consecutive year they went undefeated and haven't lost a game since September 2017.

On Saturday they will be hosting the winner of the West Hills-West Valley game being held Nov. 21.

Another South Lake Tahoe Babe Ruth team advances toward World Series

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Earlier this week the South Tahoe Babe Ruth 13-year-old all-star team became the Nevada State champs and are now headed to the regional finals in Utah.

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

This week at South Tahoe High School, the cold weather continued while students dressed up for “Versus Week,” seniors visited Lake Tahoe Community College day, and athletes brought home gold from the state championships.

On Campus
The spirit week theme was “Versus.” Students dressed up as nerds versus athletes, tourists vs. locals, rappers vs. country musicians, and more. A spirit rally is being held Friday to support the school’s canned food drive.

At South Tahoe High School, students faced a surprisingly cold week with snowfall. Advanced placement testing finished, spirit week is about to begin, and sports teams reached the state championships.

On Campus
Advanced placement tests ended this week with AP Language and Composition on Wednesday. Stress is relieved, as there are only finals left on June 17 and 18.

Next week is spirit week. With events, such as dodgeball, “manly volleyball” and dress up days, students get to show their school spirit as the school year wraps up.

South Lake Tahoe teen killed in San Luis Obispo crash

A South Tahoe High graduate has been identified as the victim in a single car crash on Highway 1 just after 3:00 p.m. Monday, December 3, 2018.

According to a press release from the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff-Coroner, the sole occupant of the vehicle was 18-year-old Zachary Andrew Harris of South Lake Tahoe.

Sheriff's deputies and officers from the California Highway Patrol responded to a single vehicle versus tree collision at Highway 1 and Stenner Creek Road, in-between Cuesta College and San Luis Obispo.

He was declared dead at the scene.

South Tahoe High runner headed to St. Mary's College

It all started when she joined her mom on Saturday runs while in elementary school. By third grade she was hooked and by fifth grade she found she loved to compete in track meets. In middle school she loved the "Pumpkin Runs" and through high school she consistently made it regional and state meets.

Today, South Tahoe High Senior Ally Sullivan signed a letter of intent to attend St. Mary's College to run on their Division 1 track team. Joined by parents Dan and Deni Sullivan, and brothers Josh and Matt, Ally signed in front of coaches and friends.

$475,000 awarded to 118 South Tahoe High seniors

During a series of recent awards ceremonies, South Tahoe High(STHS) students were recognized for academic success, attendance and bilingual immersion.

The annual Senior Awards Night saw 118 students recognized with $475,000 in scholarships. During the evening, 64 individual presentations honored one or more students for achievements.

History is made with two Lake Tahoe Grizzlies teams taking state titles

Two South Lake Tahoe hockey teams went to San Jose to compete in the 2017 California Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) State Championships, and both came home with a division title.

The Lake Tahoe Grizzlies Pee Wee A and Bantam B hockey teams won their respective divisions during the tournament at Sharks Ice March 31 to April 2.

This is the first time in CAHA history where two teams from one hockey club took home the gold in the same year.

Former Truckee High football coach dies in head-on collision

Former Truckee High School head football coach Robert Shaffer was killed in a head-on collision outside of Sierraville at Saturday night according to the California Highway Patrol in Truckee.

Shaffer, his wife Lisa and 22-year-old son Patrick were in their Toyota Corolla on SR-89 in Sierra County just before 9:30 p.m. when a Ford F250 driven by 54-year-old David Slaughter of Sacramento drifted into Shaffer's lane.

South Tahoe Grizzlies win Norcal title, now headed to state championships

The South Tahoe Grizzlies Bantam B team defeated Stockton 3-1 in Oakland earlier this month to win the NorCal Bantam B Division title, giving them entry into the California Amateur Hockey Association State Championship in San Jose March 31 and April 2.

The South Lake Tahoe team attracts top players from around the area, all playing under Coach Ken Wood and Assistant Coach Gary Grampie.

South Tahoe High skiers among tops in state; Whittell's Norton takes 2nd

Just as it had during most of the 2017 high school ski season, the Tahoe Basin State Championships held in South Lake Tahoe happened in the midst of a major snow storm.

Both days of events were switched to Sierra-at-Tahoe who kept the lifts running long enough for the student athletes to finish the slalom (SL) and grand slalom (GS) races.

South Tahoe High's girls team came in first in the slalom and third in the grand slalom, and the boys team took third in both races.

South Tahoe High Alpine Ski Teams 2nd and 3rd in League, State Championships start Monday

The 2017 Tahoe Basin Ski League State Championships (State) gets underway on Monday at Sierra-at-Tahoe, with several south shore skiers taking the gates for their schools. Tuesday's competition will move to Heavenly Mountain Resort.

Too much snow actually got in the way of a full season of competition for the South Tahoe High Alpine Ski Team.

STHS girls fall short on bid for consecutive state championship

8:00 p.m. update: The Lady Vikings have fallen short in their bid to be the back-to-back state champions in Nevada 3A Girls Soccer. It took two overtimes in their Friday night semi-final game for the Southern Nevada number one seed, Western High, to win by a score of 2-1.

The first round of the Nevada State Soccer Championships start Friday night in Las Vegas, and South Tahoe High's Lady Vikings are there to defend their title.

South Tahoe High, the defending state champs, meet Western, the number one seed from Southern Nevada at 6:00 p.m. November 11.

Whittell High's basketball team wins Northern Nevada Division IV title

Whittell High School is heading to the Nevada state championships next week as the #1 seed from the north after taking care of Mineral County, winning 60-44.

The Warriors trip to the Northern Nevada Division IV title began with a 14-0 regular season record. In round one of the tournament they beat Jackpot 69-36, followed by a semifinal Whittell victory over Pyramid Lake 60-49.

South Tahoe and Whittell High boys basketball teams head to playoffs Thursday

The boys varsity basketball teams from both high schools on the South Shore are playing in the Northern Nevada playoffs starting Thursday.

South Tahoe High boys, who are the number three seed in Northern Nevada NIAA Division 1-A, are headed to North Valleys High in Reno Thursday afternoon for their quarterfinal game against Spring Creek at 4:40 p.m. The STHS Vikings are split on the season against the Spartans with one loss, and one win.

South Tahoe's Kaitlynn Watson signs letter of intent with Loyola

South Tahoe High senior Kaitlynn Watson signed a letter of intent Friday to play volleyball of Loyola of New Orleans.

Watson takes with her a long list of accolades including All Team Academics, 1st Team All League and is currently ranked #2 in the state with digs at 360.

"The moment I stepped on the campus, I knew that is where I wanted to be," Kaitlynn said of Loyola. "They made me feel so at home, they're like a family and not a team." Watson will major in Biology with an emphasis in nutrition.

South Tahoe High's Boys Cross Country team takes 3rd in State meet

Sophomore Ally Sullivan of South Tahoe High wrapped up her second straight trip to the Nevada Division 1-A Cross Country State Championships with a fifth place finish. Sullivan hit the finish line in 21:05. Teammate Riley Rettig, a senior, finished 29th with a time of 20:14.

The south Tahoe boys cross country team took third place in the State meet, finishing just behind Elko and Spring Creek.

Jeremy Evans hired as new LTCC women’s head soccer coach

After taking the South Tahoe High Varsity Girls Soccer team to back-to-back NIAA state championships, coach Jeremy Evans has left the program to become the new Lake Tahoe Community College women's head soccer coach.

LTCC found themselves without a women's coach after first year Coyote coach Christian DeLeon recently left the program to become the new women's head coach at Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village.

South Tahoe Viking wrestlers earn trip to state championships

The South Tahoe Viking wrestling team made their trip to the 2015 NIAA Division 1A Northern League Wrestling Championships count on saturday, with five wrestlers qualifying for State next weekend.

Wrestling at 126 pounds, Junior Michael Valney beat Fernley's Dillon Maguin to bring home third place.

At the next weight class, 132 pounds, Senior James Sorenson also had a third place finish with his win over Lowry's Quint Bell.

South Tahoe Viking Girls win State Soccer Championship

For the fourth time in five years the South Tahoe High School girls soccer team has brought home top honors from the Nevada State Championships.

The Lady Vikings and the Sierra Vista High team were tied 2-2 after the Division 1-A regulation match after South Tahoe's Ashlee Schouten and Maia Bickert each scored goals, one in each half. Freshman Annie Brejc shot in the winning goal in overtime, resulting in a 3-2 victory over the team from Southern Nevada.

On the boys side, Truckee and Chapparal were tied in their match as well. Truckee went on to win the State Championship.

South Tahoe High's Cross Country teams at Nevada State Championships

The South Tahoe High Cross Country team is in Clark County this weekend for the Nevada High School Cross Country Championships. The boys will compete on Saturday at 1:20 p.m. and the girls run at 10:45 a.m.

South Tahoe's Dillon Lemmons led the Viking runners during the regional championship on Halloween with an 8th place finish. Teammates Orion Maxwell (12th), Paul Mutz (16th), Mario Mangiaracina (17th), George Freeman (26th), Paul Hoefer (35th), David Holmes (39th) and joined Lemmons to give South Tahoe a third place finish with an average time of 18:49.

Soccer fever has hit the campus at Lake Tahoe Community College as both the men's and women's intercollegiate teams prepare for the 2014 fall season.

The Whittell High School girls took first place in Giant Slalom and Duals in the Tahoe Basin Ski League Finals held in Squaw Valley this week while the South Tahoe High girls ski team took first in Slalom, second in Giant Slalom and Duals. The South Tahoe Girls took first overall.

Soccer Coaches Hired for Lake Tahoe Community College

Benjamin Wade and Christian DeLeon were hired as the new LTCC soccer coaches at Tuesday night's Lake Tahoe Community College Board meeting. Both coaches will head up the newly established intercollegiate soccer program at the college. Wade will be the men's head coach and DeLeon the women's.

In Friday's first round action the Lady Vikings beat Faith Luthern by a score of 2-1 which brought them to today's championship round against Pahrump Valley.
