It's Marathon Week in Lake Tahoe; Expect road closure October 14

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual Lake Tahoe Marathon is October 12-14, 2018 with 1,800 athletes headed to town for the race. Over 20 events will take place around Lake Tahoe during the three days of fun and festivities this year, the 23rd year of the Marathon. LTVA to distribute almost $79K to local nonprofits; Applications accepted until Oct. 15

STATELINE, Nev. - The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) will distribute $78,974 raised during the 29th annual American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament to local non-profits.

Humane Society ex-director pleads guilty to embezzlement charges

Reef's Run for Hydrocephalus Awareness in Lake Tahoe Sunday

A 2.5-mile fun run (and stroll) will be held on the South Shore Sunday, September 9 to raise awareness of Hydrocephalus, a condition most have never heard of yet it affects over one million people in the United States.

Runners (and walkers) will start at Shoreline of Tahoe on Kahle Drive in Stateline and end at Round Hill Pines Beach Resort. The cost is $40 for those 15 and older, $20 for kids 14 and under. Those running the course will start at 8:30 a.m., and walkers/strollers start at 8:45 a.m.

Costumes and tutus are encouraged, as well as the wearing of "Hydrocephalus Blue."

Motorhome leads law enforcement on chase from South Lake Tahoe to Gardnerville

A motorhome being driven recklessly through South Lake Tahoe and Stateline led law enforcement on a high-speed ride along Highway 50, over Spooner Summit and into the Carson Valley before it crashed into a building in Gardnerville, Nev.

At 10:30 p.m. Sunday, August 26, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) was alerted about the 1997 Airstream motorhome speeding through South Lake Tahoe, running red lights and traveling without headlamps on. They saw it as it crossed into Nevada traveling 55 mph in a 35-mph zone when an enforcement stop was initiated.

NHP and CHP participate in "I-80 Challenge" to target reckless and distracted drivers

The California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Valley Division and Golden Gate Divisions, having jurisdiction over the Sacramento regions and San Francisco Bay Area, are partnering with the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) to participate in an “I-80 Challenge.”

This effort aims to reduce distracted and reckless driving along the 615 miles of Interstate 80 from San Francisco, Calif. to the Nevada/Utah Stateline from Monday, August 27 – Labor Day, September 3, 2018, by enhancing traffic safety, enforcement, and education along this section of the National Highway System.

Ski and west shore buses on the transit hit list; service added to Meyers

With a goal of being sustainable, Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) is changing the way they provide transit in Lake Tahoe starting November 1, 2018.

"This is a reboot, not an end," said Carl Hasty, TTD District Manager at the District's board meeting Friday. "We'll all feel some pain but it's not the end."

There will be some cut routes, reduced hours, elimination of winter shuttles along with an addition of service to Meyers. Buses will now operate 14 hours a day instead of the current 20 hours.

Janet Jackson brings high energy and endless hits to Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - Fans of pop star Janet Jackson have been waiting a long time to see her on tour, and after Friday night's concert at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys they can say it was worth the wait.

Jackson had to put a halt to her 2015 tour and have surgery, then her tour ended again in 2016 after she announced her pregnancy. Now she has hit the road with her long-awaited State of the World Tour.

22nd annual Lake Tahoe Summit to bring together senators, the public and agencies

Steve Teshara named president of California Association of Councils of Governments

Steve Teshara, CEO of the Tahoe Chamber and chairperson of the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) Board of Directors, now has another leadership duty for the upcoming year.

Teshara will serve as the president of the California Association of Councils of Governments (CALCOG), a group whose membership includes 47 regional governments involved in the planning, funding, and development of the state’s transportation infrastructure.

He has been representing TTD on the CALCOG Board.

USFS holds grand opening of the new Round Hill Pines Beach Resort

The U.S. Forest Service held a grand opening ceremony at the newly remodeled and reconfigured Round Hill Pines Resort on Monday, officially welcoming the public to their new beachside facilities.

South Lake Tahoe Police busy with Phish concert goers and trash

South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) had their hands full on Tuesday before, during and after the first of two Phish concerts at the outdoor arena at Harveys Lake Tahoe.

Trash including empty alcohol bottles and beer boxes littered much of the open space surrounding Stateline and Cedar Avenues where hundreds of fans lined the streets. In addition to the trash, pop-up tents with vendors starting selling clothing and other items illegally.

The owner of the corner property, chateau at the Village, sent out crews to help clean, according to SLTPD Lt. David Stevenson.

Steph Curry loses bet, jumps into Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. – For the second consecutive year a Curry lost a bet and went swimming in Lake Tahoe after the American Century Championship.

But this time is wasn't Dell Curry.

Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry enjoyed it in 2017 when his dad, former NBA player Dell Curry, jumped into Lake Tahoe after losing a head-to-head bet in the tournament.

This year, it was dad Dell who got the last laugh.

Tony Romo wins the 29th annual American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - It was a come from behind victory for Tony Romo Sunday, something he was familiar with during his career with the Dallas Cowboys. He was four points back during the final round, jumping ahead of the defending champ, three-time winner Mark Mulder and the leader from the first two rounds, Joe Pavelski.

“It’s a special win,” said Romo, who had finished second three times in seven previous trips to the annual celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. “It feels like you’re playing a tournament back home here. The day felt good for a lot of reasons.”

Joe Pavelski holds onto lead at American Century Championship

STATELINE, Nev. - San Jose Shark star Joe Pavelski kept his lead during round two of the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe Saturday, finishing his round one point ahead of three-time champion and former MLB pitcher Mark Mulder.

Mulder shot a 5-under-par 67 Saturday to close the gap with Pavelski who shot par.

Former Dallas Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo, who was at 4:1 odds to win, is sitting at third as they prepare for the final round at Edgewood Tahoe on Saturday.

Bus service faces drastic change in South Lake Tahoe; Public meeting Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Public comment closes this week on plans released by the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) that address issues the agency is facing to be sustainable. Major changes are in store for riders.

Four plans were created as bus service cannot continue as it currently is due to several factors, including the cost of fleet replacement and improvement, funding availability and forecasted funds, regulatory compliance, and keeping and attracting drivers and staff.

Chariot microtransit system arrives in South lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Your chariot has arrived!

The League to Save Lake Tahoe has teamed with Chariot to bring a new microtransit service to the South Shore starting on Monday, July 9. They will use the busy summer traffic-congested tourist area to test a solution for transportation issues around the lake.

Fireworks barge catches fire in Lake Tahoe

Two hours after the Lights on the Lake fireworks show ended on July 4, one of three barges used in the show caught on fire.

The fireworks crews on board attempted to put out the fire with fire extinguishers but were unable to suppress the flames. Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) monitors the show each year and weren't far away. At 12:27 a.m. July 5, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District responded with their new fire boat, Marine 24, and doused the fire within six minutes.

There were no injuries.

Your Chariot awaits ....new micro-transit system headed to South Lake Tahoe

In an effort to keep cars off the road, a key to increasing the clarity of Lake Tahoe, a new micro-transit system is heading to South Lake Tahoe.

Chariot, a shuttle company based in San Francisco, is coming to town for a three month trial run starting in just a few weeks.

"Chariot will be more responsive than traditional transportation," Jesse Patterson, Deputy Director of the League to Save Lake Tahoe, told South Tahoe Now. "We'll get Chariot here and get people on board, then see if it works."

Harrahs Tahoe and Harvey's to start paid parking program Saturday

Harrah’s and Harveys Lake Tahoe announced today that they once again have a paid valet and self-parking program this year, beginning on the first concert date of the summer, Saturday, June 16.

Parking rates will run $20 for self-parking and $25 for valet parking with both cash and credit cards accepted for payment, and will run this summer on days and nights during major special events and peak holiday periods at both Stateline, Nevada properties.

NHP to hold Tip-a-Cop fundraiser at Hard Rock to raise funds for Special Olympics

Nevada Highway Patrol finds driver responsible for Incline Village hit-and-run

A suspect has been identified in the May 23 hit-and-run collision between a vehicle and bicyclist on State Route 28 near Stateline Road in Crystal Bay.

Nevada Highway Patrol(NHP) troopers in the Tahoe area received a tip about a possible suspect and vehicle at a residence in Crystal Bay. Troopers made contact at the residence during the afternoon of Wednesday, May 30, and located the involved vehicle. The resident admitted to his involvement as the driver in the crash.

National Trails Day community cleanup in South Lake Tahoe

The Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) and partners, the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association and US Forest Service, are organizing a morning community trailhead cleanup on Saturday, June 2 at 9:00 a.m.

Celebrate National Trails Day, the nation’s largest gathering of trails by volunteering cleaning up the South Shore. Volunteers are needed to help remove graffiti off of massive granite boulders and remove garbage on a trail connector into Van Sickle Bi-State Park.

Man arrested in South Lake Tahoe after allegedly stabbing roommate

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One man is behind bars and another at Renown Medical Center with life threatening injuries after an altercation Monday between roommates at a Stateline area motel.

At 12:30 p.m. on May 28, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a report of a stabbing at the Mark Twain Motel at 947 Park Avenue. Upon arrival they found a 23-year-old man who had recently moved to South Lake Tahoe with numerous life threatening wounds to his head and leg.

The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) is looking for the driver of a car involved in a hit-and-run crash involving a bicyclists on State Route 28 in Crystal Bay.

Weather delays NV Energy repair work on Highway 50

Inclement weather has delayed the completion of work on the damaged NV Energy underground electrical vault on Highway 50 at Stateline to Friday, June 1. They had originally planned for work to be completed on May 17.

The road has been paved with a temporary patch and both westbound lanes will remain open to traffic until permanent paving begins on Wednesday, May 30. Eastbound lanes will remain open during the course of work.

Volunteers collect 2,465 pounds of litter at “Spring Cleanup” event

On Saturday May 12th, 294 volunteers scoured South Tahoe neighborhoods to help clean up litter and kick off the summer with a sparkling clean town. The groups of volunteers covered nineteen different locations and gathered an estimated 2,465 pounds of trash and debris from our environment.

Volunteers took to the streets along Lake Tahoe Blvd and around Stateline, Ski Run, Bijou, Al Tahoe, Rufus Allen, Tahoe Sierra/Sierra Tract, Tahoe Island, Gardner Mountain, and the “Y”. Some neighborhoods had multiple groups fanning out to cover more ground.

Tahoe Shoreline Plan released; Decade-long moratoriums could be lifted

LAKE TAHOE, CA/NV – The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) today released a draft environmental impact statement for a proposed Shoreline Plan for Lake Tahoe. The draft report is available for two months of public review and comment that will conclude Monday, July 9.

Celebration of Life for Jean Gurney

The community of South Lake Tahoe lost a beloved member when Jean Gurney passed away on April 24, 2018. Like Lake Tahoe, Jean made people feel relaxed, elevated, and happy.

Jean was born on May 31, 1945 in Longview, Texas, to Viola and Frank Gurney. She spent her formative years in Massachusetts with her parents and sister Ann, and graduated from Minnechaug Regional High School in 1963.

Lanes closures and power outages over next two weeks as work wraps up in Stateline

NV Energy is in the final stages of work on the underground electrical vault damaged in an April 1 explosion on Highway 50 at Stateline. They expect work will be completed by May 17.

Both westbound lanes will have to be closed starting Monday, May 7 as work continues underground. One of those lanes will reopen on Friday, May 11.Detours will be marked.

Eastbound lanes will remain open throughout the course of work. During this time, NV Energy will be installing equipment specific to the site.
