The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT), which includes local, state and federal agencies, may continue prescribed fire operations this week in multiple locations around Lake Tahoe, weather permitting. Smoke may be present.

Meeks Bay Fire is holding their 49th annual Pancake Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, July 1 and 2 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at their fire station on SR-89. This year the Sierra States Parks Foundations have come on board to help with the popular event that provides not only pancakes but also the famous Meeks Bay Fire jumbo sausages, applesauce, milk, coffee, orange juice, and plenty of butter and maple syrup to make the meal complete!

This popular fundraising event has been called "the best of its kind" on the West Shore.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks, and the U.S. Forest Service may continue prescribed fire operations next week beginning May 22.

If conditions are favorable, operations are scheduled to take place near Sugar Pine Point, Glenbrook, Lower Kingsbury Grade, Ski Run Boulevard, Fallen Leaf Lake and Meyers. Operations may continue over the next several weeks, weather permitting.

A) Lower Kingsbury Grade Area - 5 acres
B) Sugar Pine Point State Park - 5 acres
C) Hwy 50/Logan Creek Dr - 50 acres
D) SR-89/Grass Lake Rd - 30 acres

There are two opportunities for people to help prepare Lake Tahoe campgrounds for the upcoming busy summer season. The California State Parks work days will be on May 20 at Ed Z'Berg Sugar Pine and on May 21 at D.L. Bliss .

People may volunteer for one or both days. Tools, training, lunch (and high fives) are included. As a special treat, volunteers are also invited to tent camp too.

If conditions are favorable next week, the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service are scheduled to continue prescribed fire operations starting Monday, April 17. If favorable, operations are scheduled near Meeks Bay, Tahoe City, Glenbrook, Round Hill, Lower Kingsbury Grade, South Lake Tahoe, and Meyers. Weather permitting, operations may continue over the next several weeks.

The following areas are scheduled:

A) 30 acres in the Glenbrook Area - Tahoe Douglas Fire District

With several state parks around the Lake Tahoe Basin and surrounding Sierra Nevada, budding Van Goghs have a lot of local experience to draw upon as they enter the California State Park Foundation's art contest, "Discover State Parks."

Since the parks offer endless opportunities for inspiration, the Youth Art Contest is a way for young people to draw on those experiences to create art featuring their encounters with wildlife and nature, learning about history and culture or enjoying recreation.

Pope House Tour at the Tallac Historic Site - The Pope House Tour is the perfect way to see how the rich and famous lived while at Lake Tahoe, from the separate kitchen to the elegantly restored formal dining room. Prescribed fire operations are scheduled to continue around the Lake Tahoe Basin on Monday, March 21, weather permitting.

The areas on the map scheduled to be burned, weather permitting:

A) Burton Creek State Park between North Tahoe High School and Rocky Ridge Properties, 35 acres of hand piles to be burned by California State Parks starting 3/21/16.
B) Sugar Pine Point State Park - Hwy 89 across from General Creek Campground, 12 acres to be burned by California State Parks starting 3/21/16.

The California Transportation Commission announced this week that it will award nearly $9 million in Active Transportation Program (ATP) grant funding to help complete three major bike and pedestrian projects in the City of South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe City.

Members of the Lake Tahoe Bikeway Partnership applied for the grants. The partnership formed several years ago to secure funding for critical trail segments to improve bicyclist and pedestrian safety and complete the Lake Tahoe Bikeway, a comprehensive multi-use trail network for the Lake Tahoe Region.

Fall is here early and the pine seeds are ripening. The Sugar Pine Foundation has set some upcoming cone collection days so they can gather those seeds for future plantings.

This year, there are not many new sugar pines cones, but the western white pine cone crop is abundant. They will be collecting cones from the newly identified resistant western white pine at Heavenly near Maggie's Run on Tuesday, September 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is the first known resistant western white pine in our seed zone 772, so they are very excited!

California State Parks introduced their 2015 lineup of season passes this week and included this year are a Tahoe Regional pass and the return of the popular "Golden Poppy" pass.

The new Tahoe Regional Vehicle Day Use Annual Pass will cost $75.00 per year and gets you admission to our Lake Tahoe favorites, D.L. Bliss State Park, Ed Z’Berg Sugar Pine Point State Park, Emerald Bay State Park, Kings Beach State Recreation Area and Donner Memorial State Park.

The Lake Valley Fire Protection District, California State Parks, Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations near Sugar Pine Point State Park, Pioneer Trail and Washoan Boulevard, Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly, Luther Pass, Spooner Summit, and Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park in Slaughterhouse Canyon. Operations will last through the next several weeks as conditions allow.

The following is a list of burn areas and how many acres are being burned.

Project Sunset at Washoan and Pioneer Trail - 12 acres

The Sugar Pine Foundation needs the public's help to collect seed for restoration. They are starting their annual cone harvest this fall and invite everyone to come join in the fun.

All that's needed is a pair of gloves and a helmet to volunteer as a member of the ground crew. Spectators are also invited.

The collection dates on the South, East and West Shore:

Wednesday, Sept. 10th @ 10:00am - Meyers, near the gun tower
Friday, Sept. 12th @ 9:30am - Van Sickle State Park, near the CA Parking lot

During the winter of 1960, athletes from around the world came to Lake Tahoe to participate in the Winter Olympic Games. The biathlon and cross country events were held in what is now Sugar Pine Point State Park. A celebration of the area's snow heritage begins Saturday with a series of events to showcase makes the region so special.

The South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic, a Vintage Boat Show for Charity is the Antique and Classic Boat Society, Inc., Northern California/Lake Tahoe Chapter's only ACBS-judged boat show. The 5th annual 2012 boat show is featured July 27-28 at the Tahoe Keys Marina & Yacht Club will display 70 antique and classic boats and gift $12,250 to local charities.

The family that built a century-old Lake Tahoe mansion now owned by the state has donated $100,000 for its upkeep. The state Department of Parks and Recreation has accepted the donation from the Hellman family of San Francisco to support restoration efforts at the Hellman-Ehrman estate in Lake Tahoe. The mansion is along the west shores of Lake Tahoe in the Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point State Park.
