Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

Students at South Tahoe High School returned from a week-long Spring Break tanned and ready for the final two months before summer. This week was quiet as students prepared for the Black Light Dance, prom, AP testing, and the baseball team played at Reno Ace’s stadium.

The Black Light Dance will be held on April 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the Student Union. Students dress up and paint themselves to match the theme. A surprise student DJ will be featured, so bring your glow sticks, Vikings.

TRPA: What's new for the 2019 Lake Tahoe boating season

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – New boating safety programs are coming online at Lake Tahoe this summer, according to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA).

Additional enforcement of no-wake zones and excessive boat noise under TRPA’s Shoreline Program are two measures being taken to protect the lake and non-motorized watercraft and swimmers. Boat inspections fees are also being adjusted for the first time in seven years to better safeguard the lake from aquatic invasive species, and sticker fees now include a $12 fee as part of the Shoreline Program.

New camping ordinance approved by South Lake Tahoe City Council

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On the heels of a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ recent decision that stated cities cannot criminalize sleeping on public property where there is no alternative shelter space available, the City Council Tuesday updated South Lake Tahoe's camping code.

Prior to Tuesday, the City Code prohibited camping on all public property, except in areas specifically designated for camping, but that was not enforceable since there is no permanent shelter in South Lake Tahoe at this time, just seasonal.

Lime scooters return to South Lake Tahoe with contract, new fees

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lime is returning to South Lake Tahoe this summer, but with some changes both visibly and financially during a new one-year trial period for 2019.

After much discussion on Tuesday night, the City Council unanimously approved a new contract with Lime that will bring up to 550 scooters to town this season, but, as reported before, the bikes are not returning.

The Council wanted to make sure not all 550 will appear on opening day at the beginning of May and will work with Lime to start slow.

Caltrans to hold public meeting on Meyers and South Lake Tahoe projects

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Long has been the joke that there are two seasons in Lake Tahoe, winter and roadwork. Both are holding up true for 2019 as we leave a long and heavy winter and prepare for several road construction projects.

On Wednesday, April 24, CalTrans is inviting the public to come out and learn about their three projects scheduled to begin on US 50 in the Lake Tahoe Basin this summer. The public meeting will be in the South Tahoe High School Student Union from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Cabin west of Lake Tahoe suffers total loss in fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A home at the intersection of Highway 50 and Sierra-at-Tahoe Road in the historic community of Phillips is a total loss after a fire ripped through it Friday night.

At 11:15 p.m. on April 12, Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) crews were called out to the scene along with several other agencies. Upon arrival, they found the home fully engulfed. Inside the home had been two women, one male, two dogs and two cats.

The male was transported to Barton Hospital with smoke inhalation and one cat was lost to the fire.

SLT City Council meeting to include construction allocations, camping regulations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tuesday's evening meeting of the South Lake Tahoe City Council will have a full agenda that includes replacement of aging snow removal equipment, a Lime License Agreement, and temporary suspension of the City's Residential Allocation Procedures.

Work resumes on shared use path in Incline Village along SR28

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The final stage of the three-plus mile shared-use path from the southern end of Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park along SR28 will begin on April 22, ending a four-year, multi-agency water quality and traffic safety improvement project.

South Lake Tahoe street rehabilitation plan presented to City Council

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Road rehabilitation has long been a concern of City Council, but there hasn't always been money in the budget to do anything more than patching, pothole filling and some resurfacing. With almost 130 miles of roads (260 lane miles) maintained by the City of South Lake Tahoe, with many of them past their prime, it would take millions of dollars to get all of them to a top rating.

Sierra snowpack at 200% of average

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Under a misty rain, the fourth, and perhaps final, measurement of the snowpack in Philips, California for 2019 is complete, and it's good news from the Department of Water Resources (DWR).

Their manual survey recorded 106.5 inches of snow depth and a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 51 inches, which is 200 percent of average for the Phillips location outside Sierra-at-Tahoe.

Statewide, the Sierra Nevada snowpack is 162 percent of average.

Paid parking to be added to Bellamy Court near Stateline

SLT Parks & Recreation job fair on April 3

The City of South Lake Tahoe is looking for summer staff and their Parks and Recreation Department is holding a job fair on Wednesday, April 3 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Last year's job fair was very successful and many positions were filled and they plan again to fill many positions at the fair.

The job fair is held at the Recreation Center located at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

Teachers fill LTUSD board room to ask for pay increases

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dozens of school teachers in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) filled the board room in South Lake Tahoe last Tuesday to show trustees they want a cost of living increase to their pay.

Jodi Dayberry, President of the South Tahoe Educators Association, led the teachers in their presentation to the LTUSD Board of Trustees, telling the five elected members teachers are struggling due to the high cost of living and many have second jobs and summer jobs to fill their financial void.

State Route 89 recreation plan to address traffic, experiences and parking

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Giving people a positive experience as they travel along the west shore of Lake Tahoe will require removing congestion from the roadway is one of the goals of the State Route 89 Recreation Corridor Management Plan.

A collaboration of 17 agencies and organizations have been working on the plan which covers the stretch from 15th street in South Lake Tahoe to the Placer County line at Sugar Pine Point State Park. Along the plan area are popular areas to view scenery, hike, bike and visit beaches along a 12 mile stretch of undeveloped shoreline.

Jackson Browne returns to Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena

South Tahoe High's Kody Griffis signs to play football in South Dakota

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - "We are super proud of you," South Tahoe High Football Coach Louis Franklin told Kody Griffis on Thursday as he signed his letter to play next year for the Presentation College Saints.

Surrounded by family, friends and teammates, Kody said he is looking forward to heading to South Dakota this summer to start college and playing at the next level.

Updates on South Lake Tahoe's Bijou Marketplace

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Bijou Marketplace in South Lake Tahoe is starting to take shape with the first business, Chase Bank, open and serving the public. Panda Express will most likely be the next to open.

Also confirmed for spaces with plans submitted and approved are Whole Foods and Hub Coffee, with a nail salon and Five Guys currently in plan review.

Other possible sources of PCE contamination identified in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With a 400 acre plume of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) in some of the South Lake Tahoe groundwater, agencies tasked with protecting the local drinking supply updated the community on cleanup efforts and the status of the plume Wednesday evening.

Authorities originally identified the chemical entered the groundwater at the site of the old Lake Tahoe Laundry Works which was located at the South Y Center that is now home to Raley's and KMart.

Planned Meyers roundabout project to get underway in April

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) plans to start work in April on their $4.1M project to convert the existing T-intersection at US50 and SR89 in Meyers into a three-leg roundabout.

Federal funds will be used to create what transportation officials say is a safety project by reducing the number and/or severity of collisions at the intersection. At this intersection there were 16 accidents on the Highway 50 side, and four accidents on the Highway 89 side from 2008 to 2013. There were no fatalities in those accidents.

Country star Miranda Lambert heading to Lake Tahoe outdoor concert

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Caesars Entertainment has announced country star Miranda Lambert is the sixth act to book for the Summer of 2019 Summer Concert Series in Lake Tahoe.

Lambert will be at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys Tahoe on Thursday, July 18 at 7:30 p.m. Presale tickets start March 6, with general public sales on March 8. Ticket prices are from $69.50 to $149.50 plus service charges and can be found HERE.

Sierra snowpack at 153% of average after snowy February

PHILLIPS, Calif. - The numbers weren't much of a surprise Thursday as the Department of Water Resources (DWR) conducted the third Phillips Station snow survey of 2019.

What they found in the spot they've been using to measure since 1941 was good news.

The manual measurement recorded 113 inches of snow depth and a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 43.5 inches, which is more than double what was recorded last month at this location.

Statewide, the Sierra Nevada snowpack is 153 percent of average for this date, thanks to several atmospheric rivers during February.

Sierra snowpack at healthy 98% of average, easing concerns of water shortage this summer

PHILLIPS, Calif. - Under blue skies Thursday, January 31,the monthly snowpack measurement was conducted in Phillips, southwest of Lake Tahoe at the base of Sierra-at-Tahoe, and its good news.

The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) snow survey team measured 50 inches of snow with a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 18 inches, almost double from a month ago.

Luke Bryan returns to Lake Tahoe for summer outdoor concert

Country superstar Luke Bryan is the second act confirmed to play in Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys Tahoe this summer. The four-time Entertainer of the Year brings his “Sunset Repeat Tour” to the scenic outdoor stage on August 25, 2019. Dave Matthews Band returns to Lake Tahoe outdoor arena in 2019

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Dave Matthews Band announced their 2019 North American summer tour dates today and the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys Tahoe is once again on that list.

They will make their fourth appearance at the popular outdoor arena on September 6, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. The previous three shows were all sell outs and fans can expect the same this time.

This is the first 2019 concert to be announced at the Lake Tahoe arena.

Road conditions changing on day that has brought snow, rain, thunder snow to Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Chain controls have been lifted on several Lake Tahoe area roads, but that doesn't mean the snow storm is over. January 20 has been a day full of weather, from rain and thunder snow, to white-outs at the ski resorts and breezy conditions.

Both Kirkwood and Heavenly Ski Resort had to close some ski lifts earlier today after lightning was striking in the area and Sierra-at-Tahoe closed early due to high lightning potential.

Soroptimists honor South Tahoe High and Whittell High girls

Ten senior girls at South Tahoe High School and Whittell High Schools were honored by the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe club on Wednesday for their service to the community and their leadership, athletic and academic achievements.

For over 30 years the club has honored local students via their "Women of Distinction" award program.

Lake Tahoe residents on Western Nevada College Dean's List

Western Nevada College has released the names of their Fall 2018 Dean's List, one of its largest dean’s lists in years. On the list are 373 students, accounting for 31.1 percent of the college’s full-time students.

Also on the list are residents of South Lake Tahoe, Marla Bay, Zephyr Cove and Stateline. To earn the distinction of making WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

SR28 south of Incline Village to close overnight Dec. 11-13

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - There will be full road closures on State Route 28 south of Incline Village for two nights this week so the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) can install bridges on the new shared used path.

Both directions of SR 28 will be closed between Lakeshore Boulevard in southern Incline Village near Tunnel Creek Café and Sand Harbor State Park from 8:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. nightly Dec. 11 to Dec. 13. The road closures are scheduled for overnight hours to reduce impact on heavy daytime traffic. The closures are weather dependent and subject to change.

South Lake Tahoe Olympians head to Breckenridge for Dew Tour

South Lake Tahoe Olympians Jamie Anderson, Hannah Teter and Maddie Bowman are headed for the mountains of Colorado as they take center stage at the annual winter Dew Tour ski and snowboard competition and festival in Breckenridge, Colo. December 13-16, 2018.

After last year's Dew Tour serving as an Olympic Qualifying event, fans and athletes will see the upcoming event creatively showcase its unique and progressive competitions, including the Modified Superpipe Presented by Toyota, Slopestyle, Adaptive Banked Slalom Presented by Toyota, Streetstyle and Team Challenge events.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A mama bear and her two cubs in the Gardner Mountain area of South Lake Tahoe have been popular neighbors over the past summer. The family roams from the Upper Truckee Marsh to the Tahoe Keys and sometimes into Camp Richardson.

The cubs are what is known as "Cubs of the Year," meaning they were born in January 2018. They'll hang out with their mother over the winter and then will part ways around May or June 2019.

South Tahoe High girls soccer team headed to state playoffs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High girls varsity soccer team took care of their opponents all season long and look for more of the same this weekend as they head to the 2018 NIAA 3A State Girls Soccer playoffs.

Sporting an overall 23-2 record and a league record of 17-1, the Vikings beat Truckee 2-1 Saturday in the 3A Northern Championship to take their #1 seed from the north down to Las Vegas.

Winterfest concert at Valhalla Boathouse features Oakland Jazz Choir

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual Valhalla Winterfest and Holiday Faire returns to the South Shore November 16-18 with shopping Friday through Sunday and a special Saturday concert in the historic Boathouse Theater.

The Winterfest concert with the Oakland Jazz Choir will be on November 17 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and will feature holiday music and other popular selections.

NDOT finishes ahead of schedule, no more Lake Tahoe road closures this week

The Nevada Department of Transportation has wrapped up the first in a series of overnight full road closures on State Route 28 ahead of schedule.
