SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are three open seats on the South Tahoe Public Utility Board of Directors this election season, two for a four-year term and one for a two-year term.

South Tahoe Now reached out to the candidates and below are their answers to a set of questions. For the two four-year terms, incumbent Kelly Sheehan is running for reelection, Duane Wallace is running after being appointed to fill Jim Jones's spot on the board until this election, and they are joined by David Peterson.

COVID-19 case update for Lake Tahoe area counties

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There have been two new cases of COVID-19 in El Dorado County today, one in the Greater Placerville area and the other in the Lake Tahoe region. Both are male, one aged 18-49 and the other in the 50-64 age range.

There have now been 80 cases of COVID-19 in the county. Currently there is one in the ICU and another hospitalized (from which region is not shared). There are currently 23 active cases.

To date, there have been 5,672 tests conducted, 174 of them Tuesday. There were no reported new recoveries.

South Lake Tahoe mobile vending ordinance modified to ease food truck rules

Live at Lakeview returns for 8th season in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe City Council on a delayed start Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to the current blizzard, the South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 5 will start two hours late at 11:00 a.m. The closed session portion of the meeting will start at 10:30 a.m.

City officials said this delayed start will allow attendees to get to the meeting safely.

There are 15 items on the agenda including the final vote on a cannabis use ordinance and first reading on a mobile vending ordinance.

New mobile vending ordinance for South Lake Tahoe before City Council Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Food trucks will soon be a part of the South Lake Tahoe culture if a new ordinance is approved during the City Council meeting on Tuesday, January 15, 2019.

After many public meetings and the recent approval by the Planning Commission, the new ordinance would streamline the existing mobile vendor permitting procedures and
allow limited mobile vending at up to six private commercial locations in the city.

The new year brings new laws in California

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are new laws in California in 2019 that will affect those on the road, bike paths, eating at restaurants, paying bail and receiving minimum wage. In 2018, 1,217 bills made it to Governor Brown's desk and he signed 1,016 of them which are now new laws.

Here is a highlight of some of those laws which will soon be in effect:

New interim manager hired for Town of Genoa

After losing their town manager to the Douglas County Public Works Department, the Town of Genoa has approved an interlocal agreement to appoint Melissa Blosser in their top spot.

Blosser is also Douglas County's community relations manager and public information officer and will be splitting her duties between the two roles through an interlocal agreement.

The $4,500 month-to-month contract was approved by the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners on October 18, 2018. Former Town Manager Phil Ritger accepted a position as the County's new public works director.

24th annual Oktoberfest returns to Camp Richardson Resort

A fall tradition in Lake Tahoe, Camp Richardson Historic Resort and Marina’s Oktoberfest returns for its 24th year Oct. 6-7, and it's back with more of everything. Southern Rock and Blues at Live at Lakeview Thursday

It's time for week two of the summer-long music series on the beach in South Lake Tahoe, Live at Lakeview.

On Thursday, June 28 from 4:30 p.m. 8:30 p.m., music will fill the shores at Lakeview Commons as two Tennessee artists perform.

Jack Berry, an artist with “a voice that could scare the venom out of a rattlesnake,” as Consequence of Sound describes it, makes his Live at Lakeview debut this Thursday. This Nashville-based alt/blues rocker happens to
originally be from Reno, Nevada so his headlining show is both a homecoming and a debut.

EBT card system down for 24 hours next weekend

Those who use Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards, including CalFresh and CalWORKS issued cards, will be unable to use them for a 24-hour period so the State of California can transition to a new EBT vendor.

THe statewide 24-hour EBT outage and black-out period is scheduled from Saturday, June 23, 2018, beginning at 11:00 p.m. and going until Sunday, June 24, 2018 at 11:00 p.m. During this 24-hour period, those using the EBT cards will be unable to access benefits, nor will they be able to access the program's website at www.ebt.ca.gov.

Live at Lakeview returns for 7th season in South Lake Tahoe

Sierra-at-Tahoe, the City of South Lake Tahoe and On Course Events have teamed up to present the 7th Annual Live at Lakeview Summer Music Series, which returns to Lakeview Commons on the first day of summer, Thursday, June 21.

Polystyrene ban in South Lake Tahoe takes effect October 1

South Lake Tahoe joins at least 114 other entities in California in banning polystyrene, a type of plastic manufactured from non-renewable fossil fuels and synthetic chemicals that is not biodegradable and becoming a concern across the country.

Starting October 1, 2018, certain single use expanded polystyrene and plastic products will be banned in the City limits "in order to reduce and prevent the presence of this type of litter in the environment and to promote environmentally sustainable practices."

Snow Bike Championships at Hard Rock Tahoe

The final round of the AMA National Championship Series is coming to Lake Tahoe on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the Hard Rock Casino Resort in their back parking lot.

Gates open at 1:00 p.m., practice starts at 2:00 p.m. and the race starts at 3:00 p.m. The race will end before 7:00 p.m. The awards ceremony will be held in Vinyl at Hard Rock from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Viewing ticket prices are free for kids under 5, $10 for ages 6-12 and $15 for adults.

it's time again for See's candy sales in South Lake Tahoe

The South Lake Tahoe Cancer League got their candy in early and while the store isn't open until November 27, it is now available at local locations before Thanksgiving, just in time for a holiday treat.

4th annual Winter Bazaar in South Lake Tahoe

Bids being accepted for Lakeview Commons food concession

Those interested in operating the food and beverage concession services at Lakeview Commons at El Dorado Beach Recreation Area in South Lake Tahoe may now submit a proposal.

This process was initiated in 2012 when Lakeview Commons first opened. The City of South Lake Tahoe said they would seek bids by concessionaires for the location every few years.

Group asks City Council to consider allowing food trucks in South Lake Tahoe

A planned food truck event in South Lake Tahoe had to be cancelled this summer due to the prohibitive costs and processes involved in putting on such an event.

"We are so hungry to get a food truck culture going in Lake Tahoe,” said Rob Giustina of On Course Events, the company who had planned the "Tahoe Truck Stop" food truck weekend event.

Scam targeting businesses with fake NDOT computer purchases

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is warning of a potential scam in which scammers attempt to purchase computer equipment under NDOT’s name.

Using a fake @nevadaddot.com e-mail address, scammers have attempted to purchase computer equipment without an official state purchase request or vendor solicitation. The scammers then attempt to get the equipment delivered to an out-of-state location.

Will’s Kids event brings art to 300 South Shore youth

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a beautiful day for the arts as the second annual “Will’s Kids” art fair took place at Valhalla Tahoe on Friday, August 4th. The event drew three hundred local youth and their families to see a free performance of the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival’s D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program. The Young Shakespeare Program takes the mainstage Shakespeare performance from the annual Sand Harbor festival and condenses it to a one hour version accessible for children. This year was the slapstick romantic comedy, Love’s Labour’s Lost.

Boys Scouts host 4th annual Car and Truck Show in Carson City

In their 77th year of providing scouting opportunities to boys in the Carson City and Carson Valley area, Boy Scout Troop 33 is hosting their 4th annual Send A Scout to Camp Car and Truck Show on Saturday, August 12 at Fuji Park in Carson City from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Participants can either pre-register or sign up the day of the event. Cost is $40. Each participant will get a T-shirt, one lunch meal ticket, and a dash plaque.

Live at Lakeview returns for sixth season in South Lake Tahoe

Summer is almost here and its time to start planning your Thursday evenings in South Lake Tahoe with a stop at Live at Lakeview, the summer concert series on the beach.

6th annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show

The sixth annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show will be held April 28-29, 2017 in the South Tahoe Middle School multipurpose room.

Space is being increased to allow more vendors from the region to participate in the only event of its type on the South Shore. A free children's planting area is also being added to the two day show that runs from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m on Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m on Saturday.

National Pet Day celebrated in South Lake Tahoe

The GO Local: Business EXPO returned to the South Shore with huge success thanks to attendees, vendors, volunteers, and sponsors! Over 1,300 locals and visitors gathered inside the Harvey’s convention center, Friday, March 31, as Tahoe Chamber Member businesses showcased their latest programs, products, and services.

El Dorado County and Arizona residents indicted for embezzling more than $200K

Placerville resident Jeffrey Scott Davis, 59 has been charged on six counts of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and mail fraud along with Glen Michael Martinka, 67, of Phoenix, Arizona.

A federal grand jury returned the indictment after Davis and Martinka allegedly conspired to embezzle approximately $218,000 from an organic food company by submitting false invoices between December 2008 and April 2012.

City approves redesigned fire inspection procedures and fees

Not all changes to the City of South Lake Tahoe's master fee schedule results in higher fees for residents and business owners.

During Tuesday' City Council meeting, Kevin Fabino, Director of the Development Services Department, presented the new Fire/Life Safety Inspection Program, something all South Lake Tahoe businesses must participate in annually for the safety of their customers and staff. The SLT Fire Department conducted the inspections until 2011, but they were suspended due to staffing shortages until 2015 when a fire inspector was hired for Fabino's department.

Bill Cottrill promoted to General Manager of Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel

Not quite two years after his last promotion to chief managing officer of Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel, Bill Cottrill needs another business card. Cottrill, who has been with the property for 18 years, was promoted to general manager effective June 1 by the hotel’s ownership group Premier Hotel Collection.

Cottrill’s long tenure is not unusual for the hotel that enjoys a continuously low turnover rate year after year.
