19th annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe Celebration

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - John Albert Thompson, a Norwegian immigrant nicknamed Snowshoe Thompson, was the legendary 'Mailman of the Sierras' and a man many consider to be the father of California skiing.

His life will be celebrated in South Lake Tahoe on March 2, 2019, during the 19th annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe Celebration at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The cost for the day is a $10 donation for adults and kids under 12 are free.

Another day and another wave of snowfall in Lake Tahoe and Western Nevada

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many are asking, when will this end? After a week of heavy snow, the National Weather Service has extended the Winter Snow Warning for Lake Tahoe until 7:00 p.m. Sunday night. There is also a Winter Weather Advisory for Sierra Front valleys including Reno/Sparks, Carson City, and Carson Valley through this evening.

“We still want people to stay off the roads but if you have to get out and about today be careful,” said Chris Fiore, Communications Manager for the City of South Lake Tahoe, “Plows are out and working around the clock and have been for some time.”

CHP advises motorists to not travel to Lake Tahoe this weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The stories of 10-15 hours to get to Lake Tahoe from the Bay Area on Friday were not isolated, and many of the repeat reports are occurring on Saturday.

Epic ski conditions have beckoned visitors to the mountains over the three-day holiday weekend, but what created those ski conditions has also caused local roads that aren't passable and clogged highways with frequent closures.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The predicted winter storm is in full swing around Lake Tahoe, with feet of snow in the forecast through Sunday.

Moving about is not an easy task with snow plows attempting to keep up with the falling snow.

Here is a look at road conditions as of 9:00 a.m. Friday:

Chains or Snow Tires Required - on US-50 from mile post 14.0 in Carson City County to mile post 29.4 in Lyon County in Nevada.

South Lake Tahoe schools, including college, are closed Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District get to start their winter break a day early as they will have a Snow Day on Friday, February 15.

In an announcement Thursday, Christy Blach, the LTUSD transportation supervisor said the extreme weather this afternoon and in the forecast for tomorrow led them to the decision for the safety of our students and staff.

All LTUSD schools will be closed next week for Presidents Holiday Break. Schools will resume a regular schedule on Monday, February 25th.

Winter Storm Warning through Sunday in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Lake Tahoe from Valentine's Day through Sunday, February 17 at noon.

After a day that saw mostly rain at lake level, the National Weather Service updated the warning, extending the length of the warning that originally issued and lowering snow levels through the three-day period.

With a big winter snow storm hitting the Tahoe area on Monday, February 2, there was no better crew to have sponsor the Adopt A Day of Nourishment meal than Heavenly’s Ski Patrol members. This crew braved the snowy roads and whiteout conditions to come to St. Theresa Church Grace Hall and help provide a hot and filling beef stroganoff dinner to the hungry folks who faced difficult conditions to attend B&B’s Monday Meal.

Lake Tahoe seeing rain, snow and wind; Winter Storm Warning in place

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A powerful “atmospheric river” storm is starting to make its presence known with heavy rain, high winds and snow throughout much of California and into the Sierra.

Initial forecasts had just rain at lake level Wednesday, but it is snowing as of 8:30 a.m.

Wednesday and Thursday: Heavy high elevation snow and damaging winds are expected. Rainfall amounts are expected to be between one and two inches in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday. Expect chain controls on mountain passes. Winter Storm Warning in place until 10:00 p.m. Thursday.

Drivers on closed Mt. Rose Highway a concern to Nevada Highway Patrol

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - During the storm that hit Lake Tahoe on Saturday, February 9, several drivers decided to ignore closure signs on the Mt. Rose Highway and proceed without complying to chain requirements on the open portions. These vehicles became stuck in the heavy snowfall or stopped due to zero visibility white-out conditions, leading rescuers into what they call "life-threatening conditions."

USFS to hold open house for OHV trails in Tahoe National Forest

The U.S. Forest Service is preparing an annual application to the California Department of Parks and Recreation, Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division, to request funding for trail maintenance, restoration, law enforcement, education and safety, and potentially development of facilities, and planning for off-highway vehicle (OHV) access.

On Wednesday, February 13, 2019, the Forest Service will host an open house from 3:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. in Nevada City for individuals and organizations to provide input and review proposals for the application.

Survey finds 18 Million trees died in California in 2018

While the rate at which trees died in California has slowed, an additional 18 million trees (mostly conifers) have died in the state, bringing a commitment from both the USDA Forest Service and CALFIRE to make forest health their top priority.

The USDA Forest Service announced today over 147 million trees have died across 9.7 million acres of federal, state, local and private lands in California since the drought began in 2010. Since 2016, federal, state, and local partners have felled 1.5 million dead trees, primarily those posing the highest hazards to life and property.

More snow in the Lake Tahoe forecast

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As residents and businesses finish shoveling out from the snow dropped over the region this week another storm series lurks in the seven-day forecast.

Roads a mess through the Sierra tonight, I80 closed

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tonight is an excellent time to stay off the roads around Lake Tahoe. As of 7:20 p.m. I80 remains closed from the CA/NV state line and Applegate. US 50 over Echo Summit was closed at 7:00 p.m. for avalanche control and SR 88 is closed from Peddler Vista to Red Lake Creek/the Carson Pass. SR 267 at Northstar is closed as is the Mt. Rose Highway, SR 431.

SR 89 around Emerald Bay has not opened since the storms last week and remains closed.

On the roads that are open, vehicles stuck in snow and accidents have been reported.

Chain controls in place around the Sierra as first phase of storm hits Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Road controls are up around the Sierra roadways as the first phase of weekend storms comes through Lake Tahoe. A Winter Storm Watch is in place until 10:00 p.m. Sunday, February 10.

There will be a break in the snow this morning with activity forecast to start again at 1:00 p.m.

Weekend travel around Lake Tahoe to be impacted by two storms

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Another round of storms is headed to Lake Tahoe, but not quite as potent as last week's storms that dumped several feet over the Sierra.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Lake Tahoe from 4:00 p.m. Friday to 10:00 p.m. Sunday. Heavy snow is expected. Total lake level snow accumulations of 17 to 29 inches with the highest totals west of Highway 89, except 2 to 4 feet above 7000 feet expected. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph with ridge winds gusting as high as 95 mph.

More snow headed to Lake Tahoe this weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Are you shoveled out yet from this week's snowstorm? Get ready for another weekend storm that is expected to dump up to three feet of snow at upper elevations.

There are two weather systems moving into the region, the first Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon, and the second later on Saturday into Sunday with lingering snow possible on Monday.

The first system is much weaker than the winter storms that just passed but there will still be snow accumulations and impacts to the region Friday afternoon

Sunday update: Controls on all mountain roads; blizzard conditions possible through Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's the middle of a four-day storm in the Sierra with all mountain roads impacted by the snow. There is a Winter Storm Warning in effect until 4:00 p.m. Tuesday with the next wave of it expected to hit Lake Tahoe by 4:00 p.m. Sunday.

Major storm headed for Lake Tahoe; Mountain travel discouraged

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a Winter Storm Warning in place for Lake Tahoe, one that starts on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. and lasts until Monday night at 10:00 p.m. as two major storms take aim for Lake Tahoe.

The incoming storms have prompted travel officials to warn travelers to get to Lake Tahoe by 4:00 p.m. Friday night and to stay off mountain roads from then until early Monday morning.

The warnings are calling for heavy snow at lake level anywhere from 19" to 33" and up to five feet of snow above 7000 feet over the four-day period.

The school's Alpine Ski Team is showing the film as their annual movie night fundraiser. Tickets are $15 and available from any ski team member, Coach Ms. Bedwell, or at the door. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. There will be a silent auction, door prizes, and snacks available for purchase. All profits raised go to purchase uniforms and equipment for the ski team.

Prescribed burning around Lake Tahoe set to resume

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – California State Parks and the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District will continue prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks in multiple locations around Lake Tahoe, weather, staffing, and conditions permitting.

Six areas are currently scheduled for burning -

Ski for free on Olympic trails at Sugar Pine Point State Park

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Ski on the trails made famous in the 1960 Winter Olympics during a free ski day at Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park on Saturday, February 2 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

California State Parks and the Sierra State Parks Foundation are bringing back groomed Nordic skiing at the park and have invited the public to enjoy the sport in the same spot the biathlon and cross-country events of the Olympics were held.

The latest round of winter storms has brought in plenty of fresh snow for the park to offer this popular pastime.

Tahoe Warm Room open house for the community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless is hosting an open house at the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room on February 7, 2019 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The event will begin with tours of the Warm Room from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Warm Room is the overnight emergency shelter we operate each winter to give our homeless neighbors respite from the worst of the winter weather. This year the Warm Room is located at 1201 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe, next door to Ernie’s Coffee Shop.

Road controls going up around Lake Tahoe as storm hits Sierra

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Chain controls are up on Sierra highways as what is the first stage of what is being called a "major winter storm." A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for South Lake Tahoe by the National Weather Service in Reno for Tuesday with a Winter Storm Watch going into effect Wednesday.

It’s already snowing in South Lake Tahoe with moderate to heavy snowfall anticipated tonight through Thursday. For up to the minute few of all highways through the Sierra, visit http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ for California roads and https://nvroads.com/ for Nevada roads.
