Work on new parking lot at Zephyr Cove Stables begins next week

Work on a new driveway and parking lot at Zephyr Cove Stables begins the week of May 1, 2016 when the first stage of the Zephyr Cove Stables Upgrade Project begins. Crews will be upgrading existing facilities, trails and utilities to meet current building code and accessibility standards and install Best Management Practices (BMPs) to improve water quality.

This is a joint project between the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU), Zephyr Cove Resort and Douglas County.

New parking lot, pathways and corral on tap for Zephyr Cove Resort this summer

Construction is scheduled to begin May 1 in South Lake Tahoe at what is being called the "Zephyr Cove Resort Corral and Bike Path Construction Project." When completed, there will be 1,500 feet of new pathways between the stop light at Zephyr Cove Resort and Warrior Way, new paved parking areas and improved erosion control and water quality areas due to a collaborative effort between the U.S. Forest Service, Zephyr Cove Resort and Douglas County.

66th Annual Wagon Train heads through South Lake Tahoe

A glimpse of times gone by will be moving along roads Sunday morning as the 66th Annual Wagon Train ride begins their week long trek from Zephyr Cove, NV to Placerville, CA.

In the early 1850's, pioneers crossed the Sierra Nevada into California, traversing what we now know as Echo Summit and the Highway 50 corridor. This route became known as the "Roaring Road" where travel was so heavy, oftentimes wagon trains were forced to wait for days to have their turn on the road.

Over 1,500 people attended the Tahoe Chamber's annual Business Expo at Harrah's Tahoe on Friday. Hundreds of businesses and dozens of volunteers created an evening that won't soon be forgotten.

The most innovative South Shore businesses will exhibit at the 2015 Business EXPO: Innovation in the Basin on Friday, March 27. The largest business and networking event of the year, Tahoe Chamber’s Business EXPO includes 100 local businesses ranging from restaurants and resorts to recreation providers to retailers. Tahoe Chamber thanks the community for supporting local food banks at the Annual BAHM! for Charity at Riva Grill on Thursday, January 15. Over 100 people attended and together we raised $3,650 for charities Christmas Cheer All Year and Bread and Broth. We couldn’t have been more pleased with the turnout and the amount of donations we received. We’d like to thank Riva Grill for hosting the event and providing the generous spread.

South Lake Tahoe's Lighthouse Community helps out SnowGlobers

The death of 19-year old Alyssa Byrne during the 2013 SnowGlobe event in South Lake Tahoe is still on people's minds, especially now that the temperatures have dropped into single digits with wind chills expected to take them down into negative figures.

Nick and Kadi Alfield wanted to do something this year in Byrne's memory, so they had a booth at SnowGlobe that not only charged cell phones but also gave away gloves, scarves and hats to attendees who were cold.

Agencies and public work together to keep Lake Tahoe beaches clean

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority would like to thank all of our community members, visitors, businesses and agencies who have helped keep our Lake Tahoe beaches clean throughout a busy summer season. Debris on Lake Tahoe’s beaches affects everyone’s enjoyment of the lake, and trash and debris on the beaches and streets can easily find its way to the lake and adversely impact lake clarity, water quality and wildlife.

Over 1,200 people attend Sample the Sierra in South Lake Tahoe

With blue skies and warm temperatures, many people were out enjoying everything there is to do in South Lake Tahoe this holiday weekend. Many events from a carnival to fireworks were held, giving people plenty to choose from.

One of these events was the 5th Annual Sample the Sierra Farm to Fork Festival. The main event was held at Bijou Community park on Sunday, with over 1,200 people enjoying food and drink from the region. There were 16 booths of local food, wine, beer and spirits as well as an artisan marketplace, live music and a cooking contest with a mystery box of ingredients.

The booth with the most votes will be awarded the Best Tasting Experience of 2014.

Thank you to all of those who joined us to kick start the summer season. A big thank you to Zephyr Cove Resort for hosting the Music on the Beach BAHM! this past Tuesday evening. As always, we had a great time at the resort. Offering picturesque lakefront entertainment, food and lodging, Zephyr Cove has something for everyone. We’d like to also thank local band Ike and Martin for providing the exceptional entertainment. The busy 4th of July holiday is just a week away, and with Lake Tahoe's increased crowds, excess traffic, fireworks and dry conditions, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) are asking everyone to use caution.

65th Annual Wagon Train Hits the Trail in South Lake Tahoe

It was well before the the cry of "gold" was heard throughout the country that wagon trains full of families and adventurers were making their way west.

In the early 1850's, one of the major land routes to California, traversing what we now know as Echo Summit and the Highway 50 corridor, became known as the "Roaring Road". Travel was so heavy, oftentimes wagon trains were forced to wait for days to have their turn on the road.

Success at 4th Annual Sample the Sierra

Despite smoky skies, South Lake Tahoe was still a hot spot this Labor Day Weekend. The 4th Annual Sample the Sierra festival brought in masses of people to taste the unique flavors of the Sierra Nevada. The kickoff Winemakers Dinner at Bumgarner Winery spoiled attendees with a five course meal prepared in the wood fired oven with each course appropriately paired with one of Bumgarner’s fine wines. Saturday’s Sip & Shop at Après Wine Company drew more than 20 people to taste C.G. Di Arie wines and gourmet cheeses.

U.S. Forest Service: Be mindful of safety, environment and fire when at Lake Tahoe for the July 4 holiday

Headed to Lake Tahoe for the Independence Day holiday? The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit asks residents and visitors to help protect public safety and the environment, and keep wildfire prevention in mind while celebrating.

Possession of fireworks of any kind, including sparklers, is illegal in the Lake Tahoe Basin and campfires are not permitted on National Forest beaches or in the general forest. For those planning to barbecue on the beach, the Forest Service requires the use of portable gas stoves.

Expedition Man Endurance Festival comes to Northern Nevada

Coming from as far as Australia and as near as North Lake Tahoe, more than 200 men and women athletes are gearing up for a race to remember at Northern Nevada’s inaugural Expedition Man Endurance Festival and Ultra-Distance-Triathlon, taking place Saturday, August 25. Athletes will begin with a swim at Zephyr Cove Resort at Lake Tahoe, then onto a more than 100-mile-bike-ride through Carson City and a long-run along the Truckee River, ending at the Legends at Sparks Marina.

Beach benefit for South Shore Lake Tahoe local Sean Riley set for August 15

In May, local community member Sean Riley suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of a succession of blackouts and falls. A Beach Bash Benefit is being held to help offset Sean’s medical expenses on Wednesday, August 15, 5-8 p.m., at Zephyr Cove Resort.
Sean is an off-road tour guide for Lake Tahoe Adventures and his wife, Georgette, works for the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and Tahoe Chamber. Sean has been hospitalized since May and came home this week and is now under 24-hour care. He is doing better, but does have some issues with comprehension and memory as a result of the injury, and has a long road to recovery requiring extensive therapy, home supervision and care.

For Wednesday, July 4, 2012, only, personal barbecues are allowed at Nevada, Pope and Baldwin beaches but are not permitted on any other Forest Service beaches or in the general forest.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management is working with permit-holder ARAMARK Parks and Destinations to pull three underground fuel storage tanks and remove contaminated soil at Zephyr Cove Resort. Zephyr Cove Resort is open for business as usual. The work will be visible to the highway and to resort visitors.
