Forest Service comment period opens on e-bike policy changes for Lake Tahoe trails
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/09/2023 - 12:20pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - With the popularity of electric bikes, or e-bikes, growing around Lake Tahoe, the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit of the USFS (LTBMU) has proposed an update to its current regulations on trails around the lake. This planned move is to offer increased potential for recreational experiences on National Forest lands. They have opened a 30-day public comment period for the newly released Basin Wide Trail Analysis, which includes constructing 25 miles of new multi-use trail and opening 106 miles of existing trail around the basin to class-1 e-bikes.

During their budgeting process for the 23/24 budget, 3,551 students had been projected by the District and they now have 3,621.

Born on December 17, 1939, in Hot Springs, South Dakota, Carol will be remembered for her joyful, caring, and generous heart and will be missed by all who knew her.
Carol was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, John Gillespie on December 15, 2022, her daughter, Anita Goodnow-Cabral in 1985, and her son, Bruce

Veterans TOT grant cycle open for round two of funding

The funds are from the County's Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT).
Grant requests of up to $10,000 will be considered by organizations that did NOT receive funding during the first cycle of this grant in August 2023.
South Lake Tahoe Police Department receives over $98K TO reduce alcohol-related harm

The grant is one of nearly fifty awarded in California to local law enforcement agencies through ABC’s Alcohol Policing Partnership (APP) program.
These grants strengthen local law enforcement efforts by combining theirs with ABC agents who have expertise in alcoholic beverage laws to help reduce alcohol-related harm within their community.

The awarded $15,000 grant will support two of the organization’s programs, the B&B 4 Kids Weekend Food Bag program and the “Green Goal” project. Since Bread & Broth is an all-volunteer organization, all grant monies will be used to purchase food for program recipients.

First came the Civic, setting the stage for a new design direction, followed by the Accord, HR-V, CR-V, and now the big Pilot, Honda’s flagship vehicle for the brand (unless you count the NSX, badged as a Honda in other countries). I loved the new Civic and Accord, so I had big hopes for the Pilot, and what I found subverted expectations in both good and bad ways.

Trustee Doug Englekirk from the Tahoe Township, who is the board vice-president, broke away from the three newer board members Susan Jansen, David Burns, and Kathrine Dickerson, and voted on the side of the more seasoned board members, Linda Gilkerson, Carey Kangas, and Tony Magnotta.
Woman killed in El Dorado County homicide was South Lake Tahoe native, STHS grad

When deputies arrived, they located a female who was deceased in a residence.
At a neighboring residence, a male was located suffering from traumatic wounds. The male was transported to an area hospital.

If you are planning on attending the shows this weekend you are encouraged to take advantage of the free, expanded service. The bus will start at the Y at the times below, and make normal stops along US50/Lake Tahoe Boulevard including the event center and Kingsbury Transit Center.

Most districts will be operating under the same fall and winter rules, though the City of South Lake Tahoe will continue its ban on open burning.
South Lake Tahoe will allow Solo stoves and charcoal fires starting Monday, but no fires or fire pits with wood or other solid fuel due to City Ordinance.
Expect delays along US50 and SR28 as Caltrans continues roadwork

Electrical work related to the recent repaving of U.S. 50 in South Lake Tahoe will lead to several lane closures starting Monday, October 9.
Monday, October 9 from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. - One eastbound lane will be closed between Trout Creek and Fairway Avenue.

The Adjuvanted Flu Vaccine (which is recommended for 65 years and older per the CDC) and the Updated COVID-19 Vaccine will be offered at these clinics when the vaccines are available.
Insurance or appointment is not required for any of the clinics.

Seasonal closures apply to many recreation areas and sites including beaches, campgrounds, forest roads, parking lots, and picnic areas.
Basic Vehicle Maintenance 101 taught at LTCC this month

The class is being taught by John Gomez of Tahoe Driving Academy and will provide students with the ability to learn on their own cars, something unique to vehicle maintenance classes. Gomez plans on taking participants to the parking lot during the workshop so they can learn on the spot on their own vehicle.

Seven teams visited South Lake Tahoe to compete in the 13U baseball tournament at the South Tahoe Middle School fields. The Nevada Bandits hoisted the inaugural 'Chill Out' championship belt after a hotly contested, extra-innings win over the South Tahoe Chill Gold.

TRPA seeks feedback on transit around Lake Tahoe

TRPA, in its role as the Regional Transportation Planning Agency, performs an annual evaluation of unmet transit needs around the lake.
Pursuant to the California Transportation Development Act (TDA), the process seeks to identify any unmet transit needs and ensure those that are reasonable to meet, are met before TDA funds are expended for non-transit uses, such as streets and roads. Currently, all TDA funds are allocated to transit uses.

Liberty Utilities postpones planned power outage in South Lake Tahoe

Businesses and residents near Rufus Allen Blvd would have been affected by the power outage.
Liberty Utilities had originally planned to message those in the area and leave door notices.
The planned outage will occur at a future date.

"Sometimes the least meaningful things in life can occupy all of our attention and rob us of the joy from that which matters most," said Kauffman.
The two-month-long show opens with a reception on October 5 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. The show runs through December 8.

On Tuesday, the Department of Water Resources (DWR) highlighted how the State and its federal and local partners are preparing for the new water year that started on October 1. DWR said they are also preparing for the possibility of another wet season under strong El Niño conditions.

Bob Baunhauser Unsung Heroes recognized at celebration

The award is named the Bob Baunhauser Excellence in Service Award in recognition of the longtime local man who exemplified service. He selflessly gave his time and resources to others, especially the children of the community, without any expectation of publicity or recognition.

Douglas County Community Health and Quad County Public Health are both holding flu vaccination clinics at Kahle Community Center on Wednesday, October 4.
Even though they are Nevada agencies, they will be accepting South Lake Tahoe residents as well as Nevada residents.
High-dose vaccines are available for those 65 and older in limited quantities at both events. If you do not have insurance, you will not be turned away.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - — South Lake Tahoe’s indoor mini golf course, Flatstick Pub, also known as Tipsy Putt, will be teaming up with the ALS Association to give back to the South Lake Tahoe community. Each Sunday in October, Flatstick Pub will donate $1 for every beer and $1 for every round of mini golf purchased.
Lake Tahoe prescribed fire operations continue, conditions and weather permitting

If conditions and weather are favorable, California State Parks may continue understory burning over the next two weeks in Burton Creek and Sugar Pine Point state parks, and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit may continue burning piles on Angora Ridge near Fallen Leaf Lake. Smoke will be present.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Learning Haven is holding its next forum, Adulting 101, on Wednesday, October 11 from 6:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe.
This forum will focus on the responsibilities "adults" have, focusing on giving teens tips and tricks. Learn about the responsibilities that come with turning 18 and explore the different options there are post-high school, including college, trade school, careers, and armed forces.
Three vying for Tahoe Township Justice of the Peace to replace retiring Judge Glasson

The Honorable Richard Glasson will officially retire on October 5, leaving the remainder of his term to be filled.
During the meeting, the commissioners will be recognizing Judge Glasson for 23 years of service to the State and County.
