TAHOE CITY, Calif. - The Alta Alpina Composite (AAC) cross country mountain bike team raced to a 3rd place overall finish at the North Tahoe Challenge in Tahoe City.
The top finishers for the team were:

Liberty Utilities held their second of four Bread & Broth Adopt A Day (AAD) of Nourishment sponsorships of 2022 on August 22. They sent five very happy and hardworking Liberty Utilities AAD crew members to help the Bread & Broth (B&B) volunteer team. 5:00PM Update: The Consolidated Bomb Squad and other agencies respond to explosives found near Lake Tahoe
At approximately 9:36 a.m. on August 29, 2022, a citizen made a call to Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch stating they had discovered what appeared to be an explosive along State Route 28 near Mile Marker 1.
WCSO Deputies searched the area on foot and located the explosive among pine straw, rocks, and trees about 150 feet to the west of the highway.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was the late-night knock on the door nobody wants - an officer standing there telling you to be prepared to evacuate your home due to fire.
Everyone living in the southern portion of the Lake Tahoe Basin had been watching the red and yellow maps showing which areas were under mandatory evacuation orders as well as those in the warning phase since the Caldor Fire exploded and headed east after starting in Grizzly Flats on August 14, 2021.
Warm week ahead for Lake Tahoe as high-pressure strengthens

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - High pressure strengthens this week with a build-back over the high desert areas of the west coast. This will initiate a period of anomalous above-average heating over much of the Great Basin region that extends west into the Sierra, but most of Lake Tahoe will be spared. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said a prolonged stretch of heat is possible through the Labor Day Weekend. Some areas will experience a 15-20 percent chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms Monday afternoon and evening.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The three-year-long Control Methods Test (CMT) began this summer in the Tahoe Keys. The projected mid-July reopening date of closed waterways has come and gone and it may be several more weeks until boaters, paddlers, swimmers, and pets can access those closed areas.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - School starts in South Lake Tahoe Monday and there will be changes in bus schedules and start times in the 2022/23 school year.
Meyers - Grades K-5, school starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 2:20 p.m. On minimum days school ends at 12 p.m., and every Wednesday until June 7 is collaboration day, and school ends at 1:20 p.m.
Sierra House Elementary - Grades K-5, school starts at 8:05 a.m. and ends at 2:25 p.m. On minimum days, school ends at 12:05 p.m., and every Wednesday until June 7 is collaboration day, and school ends at 1:25 p.m.

The Tahoe Prosperity Center (TPC) welcomes Crystal Sawyer-White as its new senior housing program manager. She is replacing Chase Janvrin who left to work with Landing Locals, the housing incentive programs in Lake Tahoe, Truckee, and Colorado.
Crystal brings a diverse background of experience to this role and is passionate about ensuring Tahoe residents have access to locally based housing options.

Platinum might be one of the most valuable precious metals in the world, but the Platinum Tundra is now mid-grade when it comes to pricing in Toyota's new Tundra lineup. This is the second Toyota Tundra I've tested (after the range-topping Capstone) and easily the better of the bunch. It has all the luxury you could want from a truck, and on par with the Capstone, but it costs $10,000 less. There are a few features (that you don't need) that it forgoes, but it's overall the best new Tundra you can buy. If you want a Tundra, that is; competition is fierce.

Olympic Valley resident killed in head-on collision on SR-89

TRUCKEE, Calif. - SR-89 has reopened after being closed Friday afternoon following a fatal collision involving one International box truck and three other vehicles.
On August 26 at approximately 1:20 p.m., the truck, driven by a 43-year-old male from Vallejo, Calif. was heading north on SR-89 when for unknown reasons he allowed the truck to cross over the solid double yellow lines and into the southbound traffic lanes.
Power outage affecting 3,703 customers

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty Utilities is reporting an outage that has affected 3,703 of its customers in Meyers, and along North Upper Truckee and South Upper Truckee roads.
The outage occurred at 10:22 a.m. Friday and crews are on their way. It is estimated to be restored by 1:25 p.m.

They have enjoyed a "normal" practice season - no smoke, no bad air days, no evacuation, and no mandated vaccine policies.

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - Ken Burkhart has been hired as the new superintendent of schools for Alpine County and the new principal of Bear Valley Elementary School.
Burkhart arrives in Alpine County with many years of experience working in small school districts and rural communities. He comes from Pope Valley in Napa County where he served as the superintendent, principal, and teacher at Pope Valley Elementary for the past 7.5 years. Prior to that, he held the same role in the town of Flournoy in Tehama County.

Alpine County Schools is hosting a Bingo Night at Diamond Valley Elementary School on Friday, September 23 starting at 5:00 p.m. There are cash prizes for the adults and toy prizes for the kids.
The cost is $20 for 10 games for those 15 or older, and $1 for 10 games for kids (4-14). Food will be available for purchase.
All funds raised during Bingo Night will go to support a Harvest Festival and haunted house on October 21, 2022.
Volunteers are needed to help with Bingo Night or to donate prizes for bingo or the silent auction. Contact the school for more information.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue provides water safety training for over 100 children

MINDEN, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (DCSAR) Team completed another successful summer water safety training series this past Saturday with the Carson Valley Swim Center (CVSC) and its staff. Over 100 children and their parents learned the basics of water safety in and around lakes and rivers. Those trained included junior lifeguards swim lesson attendees, cub scouts, and girl scouts.

TRUCKEE, Calif. – Caltrans is reminding Interstate 80 (I-80) motorists in Truckee of continued overnight off- and on-ramp closures due to construction work.
Grinding and paving work continues to require overnight interstate ramp closures at various locations. Motorists may encounter off- and on-ramp closures between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. Sunday, August 28 through Friday, September 2. Two consecutive off- or on-ramps will not be closed at the same time. Ramps subject to closure include:

Last call for SB930, California bill aimed at allowing bars to stay open until 4 a.m. fails to pass

It was last call on Senate Bill 930 "the late night bar bill" in California Wednesday. The state assembly rejected the bill that was a pilot program to allow bars in West Hollywood, San Francisco, and Palm Springs to extend the final call for alcohol at bars, clubs, and restaurants to 4 a.m. on weekends, and 3 a.m. on weekdays.
El Dorado County supervisors fail to approve new navigation center and homeless shelter

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - During their meeting Tuesday, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors failed to pass a planned navigation center and emergency shelter for the west slope's unhoused population. Construction was slated to begin on September 8.

Attempted carjacking in South Lake Tahoe lands man in jail on multiple charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe man was arrested Sunday on charges stemming from an alleged attempted carjacking on Julie Lane.
According to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), Jason Jacobsen, 40, approached a person sitting in his vehicle. The two men did not know each other and SLTPD says Jacobsen started kicking the victim's vehicle, resulting in several dents. Jacobsen opened the car door, and allegedly assaulted the victim sitting in the driver's seat.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - California’s climate is getting hotter and drier, and the consequences are taking a toll on the state’s ecosystem. If you've been at the beaches of Lake Tahoe recently, you'll notice something that isn't normal - algae, and lots of it. Experts are warning residents and visitors to be on the lookout for harmful algal blooms (HABs) in bodies of water in the greater Tahoe area.
No area is in the danger zone at this time, but people and dogs using the following areas should take caution:

Soaring Ranch is partnering with the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe to find loving homes for every pet in the shelter. Adoption fees will be covered by Soaring Ranch starting Thursday, August 25 at 1:00 p.m. and going through Saturday, August 27 at 6:00 p.m. All potential adopters need to complete an application first.

California collects $257M in second quarter cannabis tax revenues

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - This week, the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) reported that $275.2 million was collected in cannabis tax revenue for the second quarter of 2022. This includes California’s cannabis excise tax, which generated $141.3 million; the cultivation tax, which generated $25.8 million; and $108.1 million in sales tax revenue from cannabis businesses. This figure does not include locally imposed taxes collected by the cities and counties of the state, nor does it include outstanding returns.

UPDATE: With the current threat and uncertainty of the Mosquito Fire, organizers have had to move the concert. It was either cancel, or move the UB40/Wailers/Maxi Priest/Big Mountain concert set for Sept. 22.
Fortunately, the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno has allowed them to move this event to their Grand Theater on the same day to save the show.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As tens of thousands of people start their trek to the Black Rock Desert, a South Lake Tahoe artist and her friends are finishing up an art piece that will be featured at 2022 Burning Man.
Kelly Smith Cassidy is no stranger to being a featured artist at Burning Man. This is the fourth time she has had her art on display at the annual event, and the third time with a lead piece.

Autopsy confirms the body found in Prosser Creek Reservoir was that of Kiely Rodni

It has been confirmed that the deceased individual found in the Prosser Creek Reservoir on Sunday, August 21 was 16-year-old Kiely Rodni of Truckee.
An autopsy was conducted Monday and the Nevada County Sheriff-Coroner identified the decedent as Kiely Rodni. She had been missing for over two weeks after attending a party with 200-300 teens and young adults at a nearby campground.
Woman sitting on curb hit by vehicle at Lake Tahoe - driver arrested, victim airlifted

STATELINE, Nev. - One woman was airlifted to Reno after being struck by a vehicle on Lake Parkway on Saturday evening.
At approximately 9:43 p.m., multiple calls to the 9-1-1 system were received. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) responded to the report of a person being struck by a truck near the road's intersection with Stateline Avenue behind Harvey's Lake Tahoe during the Robert Plant-Alison Kraus concert. Several bystanders had rushed to assist after the collision.

The Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra chartered and held the first Aktion Club of Lake Tahoe meeting in August 2012. This is a community service group open to all adults living with disabilities. More than anything, people living with disabilities want to be treated like everyone else. They want to show they have value, to get out and give back. Aktion Club inspires its members to take on leadership roles, play a part, and do things that really make a difference.

Our goal is to eliminate Douglas County VHRs in our residential zoned neighborhoods. We are gathering names on a petition titled “OPPOSITION TO VHRS IN RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS We the undersigned residents of Douglas Township want to eliminate vacation home rentals (VHRs) in residential neighborhoods. We find this commercial use of residential homes incompatible with the residential zoning and character of our neighborhoods.”

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Most of Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting will be a budget workshop, but first there is discussion and vote in their role as South Tahoe Redevelopment Successor Agency on a letter of intent to sell two surplus lots, 3900 and 3908 Lake Tahoe Boulevard. Between 7-11 and the National 9 Motel, these lots were part of the Loop Road route plans from the current highway to behind Raley's.

Tahoe Brewfest this weekend to raise funds for Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe is holding its 5th annual Tahoe Brewfest to the heart of South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, August 27 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Ski Run Boulevard will be closed for the event as people celebrate the mountain culture, beer, and community along the roadway.
Ticket holders will delight in endless beer samples from some of the top breweries in the region, including:

Vail Resorts today announced the opening dates of its 37 North American resorts. Heavenly and Northstar will be opening on November 18, followed by Kirkwood on December 2.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The lineup for this fall's Dancing With The Tahoe Stars has been released, and it is once again full of high-energy locals ready to raise funds for the Tahoe Arts Project. The event will be held on October 15 at Bally's Tahoe at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25-$75 and go on sale to the public on Sept. 15 at tahoeartsproject.tix.com.

DCSO investigating third-party report that there would be a shooting at Douglas High Monday

Monday morning update: Douglas High School is opening today and there will be extra DCSO patrols around campus.
In a message to parents, DCSD Superintendent Keith Lewis said said the school's resource officers and DCSO Sheriff Dan Coverly are investigating a third-party report that an individual was told not to attend the first day of school due to a planned school shooting.
If students choose not to attend school due to this situation, their attendance will be excused.
"Highly likely" the body pulled from a submerged car is that of missing 16-year-old Kiely Rodni

MONDAY Update: During a joint press conference in Truckee Monday, law enforcement said it is likely the body found in Prosser Creek Reservoir is that of missing 16-year-old Kiely Rodni. An autopsy is being conducted on Tuesday.
The non-profit dive recovery team, Adventures With Purpose, said they found Rodni's submerged vehicle in 14 feet of water on Sunday, April 21.
Nevada County Sheriff Shannon Moon said they believe the body is that of Kiely, but they will wait for the autopsy to confirm identity.
