SR-28 reopens after dynamite found along road between Sand Harbor and US-50

5:00PM Update: The Consolidated Bomb Squad and other agencies respond to explosives found near Lake Tahoe

At approximately 9:36 a.m. on August 29, 2022, a citizen made a call to Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch stating they had discovered what appeared to be an explosive along State Route 28 near Mile Marker 1.

WCSO Deputies searched the area on foot and located the explosive among pine straw, rocks, and trees about 150 feet to the west of the highway.

The Consolidated Bomb Squad was contacted and responded to the scene located between Thunderbird and Sand Harbor to assess the situation and possibly attempt to render the explosive safe.

At 11:20 a.m., SR 28 was shut down to traffic for safety precautions.

The Consolidated Bomb Squad then used a robot to retrieve the explosive. The explosive was detonated and rendered safe. Nothing else was discovered on scene in the investigation and SR 28 was reopened to traffic at around 3:30 p.m. The explosive appeared to be dynamite that was very old.

This was a multi-agency effort by the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Nevada Highway Patrol, FBI-Reno, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, North Tahoe Fire Protection District, Tahoe-Douglas Fire Protection District and Park Rangers.

Remember if you see something, say something. The attentive actions of this citizen may have prevented a future accident.

3:20PM Update: The highway has reopened.

2:50PM Update: The road closure is due to activity by the Consolidated Bomb Squad and other agencies.

WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. - SR-28 is closed in both directions due to "police activity."

At 11:22 a.m., the Nevada State Police, Highway Division, closed the road near Thunderbird Lodge, between Sand Harbor and Spooner Summit/US-50 in both directions per the request of the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.

According to the Nevada State Police, it is estimated the road will be reopened between 3:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

At this time there are no other details.
