INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – The Tahoe Big Year, an event which is held every three years by the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS), welcomes birders of all abilities to head outside to find as many different species of birds as they can during the calendar year. While many treat the event as a competition (with some great prizes available thanks to sponsors like Patagonia), it’s also simply a great way to get started in birding, or get more serious birding, and it’s a fun, free, family-friendly activity either way.
Report on projected impact of possible vacancy tax in South Lake Tahoe called flawed, rushed, and full of assumptions

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The company HdL hired by the City of South Lake Tahoe to create a Section 9212 report, analyzing the financial and other impacts of the vacancy tax should it pass. The report shows the financial impact could be $27 million in annual local business spending, a number that is being called out by many in the community. They also state the City could gain an additional 1,543 residents.
During the June 16 City Council meeting, the HdL report was discussed, with Mayor Cody Bass saying, "Too much of the report is assumptions."

South Tahoe Futbol Club boys end season with success

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Six South Tahoe Futbol Club (STFC) boys teams advanced to championship games at the 28th annual Come Up for Air (CUFA) soccer tournament last weekend in South Lake Tahoe, with two teams claiming first-place finishes.
The U-13 STFC Coyotes, coached by Jose Del Rio, captured the Tallac Division championship with a 3-2 win over Reno Apex. The middle school-aged team went undefeated in its four tournament games and outscored opponents 15-7.

A Tahoe City resident and business owner has pleaded guilty to a charge of smuggling goods into the United States. Andrew Laughlin, 47, acted as a middleman in an international amphibian smuggling ring and will be sentenced on Oct. 7, 2024.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A high-pressure area continues to affect Nevada, the Sierra, and northeast California. Sunny skies and hot temperatures prevail though there is a 10%-15% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mostly south of Tahoe. Overnight lows will drop into a more normal range of 40 degrees mid-week. Winds will pick up in intensity on Wednesday and Thursday - they will be from the west on Wednesday, but then veer to the northwest. The dry weather and stronger winds bring near-critical fire weather conditions in the region.
Douglas County approves permit for Beer Garden over 4th of July weekend at Zephyr Cove

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Commissioners approved a special use permit for a Beer Garden at Zephyr Cove Resort over the 4th of July weekend. There has been a lot of concern about the event after the 2023 party at the adjacent Zephyr Shoals that left behind 8,000 pounds of trash, and videos of a massive party scene with drinking, including underage drinking.
Aramark, the operator of the resort, was given a new 20-year concessionaire permit in November, and a difference in the new permit was the operation of Zephyr Shoals, something not included in the past.
Update for North Lake Tahoe's Gas Line Replacement Project on SR28

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Caltrans is advising motorists of traffic-interfering work continuing on State Route 28 (SR-8) along the north shore of Lake Tahoe next week.
Southwest Gas and its contractor, Q&D Construction, continue work on a gas line replacement project on SR-28 between Tahoe City and Kings Beach.
One-way traffic control is scheduled between Ridgewood Road and Jeffrey Lane from Sunday, June 23 at 7 p.m. until Friday, June 28 at noon.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Road rehabilitation projects for the City of South Lake Tahoe are underway. Paving will begin on Monday, June 24, starting on Sherman Way. It will then proceed down to Keller and Saddle roads.
Upcoming work will also be done on 10th St. The City will provide updates during the paving season to keep the public informed.

While this event may be a bit smaller than those of past years, a selection of 25 ornamental species of both native and adaptive plants will be available including Blue Flax, Elderberry, Mock Orange, Twinberry, and Western Spiraea. These plants will flourish in the Tahoe Basin’s high-elevation environment.

TRPA to review fuels reduction at Homewood Resort at next board meeting

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - last month, The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) received a formal application from Homewood Mountain Resort for amendments to the resort master plan approved by TRPA in 2011. The agency is currently reviewing the application and supporting documents to determine if the application is complete.
As part of the review process, planners will draft a timeline for TRPA review including a schedule of public input opportunities.
Lake Tahoe to receive $3.4 million for Aquatic Invasive Species protection

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently announced an additional $3.4 million in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to prevent and combat the spread of aquatic invasive species in Lake Tahoe. The funds come from the President’s Investing in America agenda to support existing cooperative agreements with The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) to prevent and combat the spread of aquatic invasive species in Lake Tahoe.
Pony Express ReRide comes through South Lake Tahoe Wednesday

Even though the Pony Express was in operation for only 18 months between April 1860 and October 1861, it is synonymous with the Old West. In the era before easy mass communication, the Pony Express was the thread that tied East to West.
That bit of history is still reenacted each year during the Pony Express ReRide which takes riders and their horses almost 2,000 miles between St. Joseph, Missouri and Sacramento, Calif.

Our rogue council member, politician, Scott Robbins, and his minions, Nick Speal and Amelia Richmond, have cherry-picked parts of a hastily prepared report and are trying to drag us into the weeds by confusing the issue. They are crowing about self-manufactured statistics using bad math to make their points. It’s a very cagey tactic these city council wannabes are using to suck us into arguing statistics, math, and outcomes.

After attending the city council meeting on June 18 at which the Vacancy Tax Report was presented, I felt it was important to make a few observations. The report was presented from the very start with apologies for the many “assumptions” contained within. Assumptions regarding every aspect of the information presented. The proposed taxes generated, the number of new residents, the number of homes in the city, the new retail sales, the revenue generated to the city, the percentage of compliance, the costs of administration, etc.
City Council approves over $411,000 in Cannabis Revenue Grants to local nonprofits

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council has restated its commitment to allocate up to 50 percent of the previous year's cannabis revenue to a community benefit grant program.
During their Tuesday meeting, the Council awarded funds to nonprofits that work to mitigate the effects of having legal cannabis sales in the city limits.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Personal use fuelwood permits are now on sale at the Forest Supervisor’s Office in South Lake Tahoe. Permits cost $20 per cord with a two-cord minimum purchase and a limit of 10 cords per household. Permits have specific conditions and complete information is provided when the permit is issued. Maps to designated cutting areas are also provided and must be in the permit holder’s possession along with the valid permit when cutting.

Teruyo (Terry) Kunibe passed away peacefully at home on June 11, 2024. She was born in Perkins, California, to Japanese immigrants Tsuneichi Kimura and Tomiye Fukuoka on October 7, 1921. Terry is survived by her children: Charlene Braun (Andy), Susanne Sharpnack (John), Phyllis Powers (Terry), and Russell Kunibe (Shannon). Open burning banned around Lake Tahoe through summer

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Fire restrictions are now in place around the Lake Tahoe Basin and all solid fuel recreational and cooking fires and open burning are banned for the rest of the summer season. Solid fuel includes charcoal and wood. This also applies to parks and beach charcoal grilling areas, although federal and state land campfire restrictions may differ in the areas they operate.

I moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1993 when I was 19 years old. I turned 50 this spring and I'm still stoked to live here 30 years later. I love South Lake, but I'm starting to wonder what it will look like in another 30 years. Our town is changing, shrinking, and losing "the middle", and if you don't see it, or you don't want to do anything about it, I am writing this to you.
