SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Every trip around the sun is not exactly 365 days, so once every four years the calendar gets adjusted with "Leap Day." Ancient astronomers knew this but it took until the year 45 B.C. to add that extra day to the calendar. Julius Caesar declared that year to be "Ultimus annus confusions," the last year of confusion.

We're not sure about the confusion part ending though.

February 29 is Leap Day, and it only shows up on the calendar once every four years - the same year as the Summer Olympics and presidential election.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty encourages customers to prepare for the approaching winter weather.

Severe winter weather has been forecast starting Thursday, February 29, and is expected to last through Sunday, March 3. The high winds and heavy snow may produce hazardous conditions and increase the potential for power outages. Poor road conditions, challenges accessing remote areas, heavy snow, falling trees, and/or the nature of repairs required may result in extended power outages. As such, it is important for you to prepare now.

Here are some tips to help you prepare:

TAHOE CITY, Calif. The Tahoe Fund and USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) have announced a new collaboration. They are looking for community-based artists to “beautify” the blank interiors of the restrooms at the Stateline Fire Lookout Trail in Crystal Bay, the Logan Shoals Vista Point on Tahoe’s East Shore, and the Tallac Historic Site on the South Shore.

They hope murals depicting Tahoe’s plants, animals, and beautiful landscapes will reduce vandalism, and inspire people to take care of Tahoe.

Ski California is expanding the content available as part of its award-winning Mountain Safety Guide with the upcoming release of its newest video focused on deep snow safety. Created to educate skiers and riders about the risks of deep snow immersion, how to avoid it, and what to do if you or someone you’re with becomes immersed, the video was released Monday.

“Ski California’s 36 member resorts in California and Nevada regularly see storm totals that are measured in feet, not inches,” said Mike Reitzell, Ski California president.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe City Council voted 4-1 on Tuesday to terminate efforts to create a ballot measure to raise the Tourist Occupancy Tax (TOT) by another two percent. A vote to prepare the measure for the ballot would have needed to get started to make it to the November ballot.

Revenues generated would go into the General Fund with the instructions they'd be used toward roads, police, fire, and housing.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) is encouraging public review and feedback on key transportation plans that are meant to improve Lake Tahoe’s bicycle and pedestrian system and to encourage public involvement in transportation improvements. The Active Transportation Plan focuses on connecting all methods of travel that do not rely entirely on a car, like walking, biking, and rolling.

UPDATE: Due to the incoming storm, Thursday's grand opening has been moved to Sunday, March 3.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Protective Association (DCSPA) has issued an endorsement for the current Tahoe Justice of the Peace Judge Michael Johnson to retain that position.

DCSPA President Justin Fricke made the announcement on February 25.

“I am honored to receive DCSPA’s endorsement,” responded Johnson. “These Douglas County deputies and sergeants are vital participants in the judicial system and have been in a position to observe and evaluate my performance as judge, so I accept this endorsement as an affirmation of my judicial service, past and future.”

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It is time for the 28th annual CASA El Dorado Box Lunch. Box Lunch is one of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) El Dorado's biggest outreach and fundraising events each year. They work with community partners and volunteers to make and deliver over 3,000 pre-ordered lunches to schools, businesses, and individuals throughout El Dorado County from South Lake Tahoe to El Dorado Hills. All funds raised through this event directly support recruitment, training, and ongoing supervision of CASA.

STATELINE, Nev. - Firefighters from the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) responded to a home fire on Holly Lane in Lake Village on Monday, February 26. The call came in at 11:25 a.m.

Three engines and two rescue vehicles responded. The teams were able to knock down the fire quickly before it spread to other homes and condominiums. The occupants were able to escape without injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and there is no estimate of damage though the home is not inhabitable at this time.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The March Presidential Primary is just a week away, and there are some dates and locations South Lake Tahoe and Meyers voters need to be aware of.

El Dorado County has 132,294 registered voters, with about 18,000 in South Lake Tahoe. Registered voters should have already received their ballots in the mail, and if not already mailed in, they will also be accepted at the following locations:

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Supervisor Brooke Laine has published a survey for El Dorado County residents living in the unincorporated area of the Lake Tahoe Basin (including Meyers and Tahoma).

There are nine questions about public transit in the region.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If the forecast holds, March will be coming in like a lion this year. But first, there are Winter Weather and Lake Wind advisories to get through.

Starting at 4 a.m. Monday there is a Lake Wind Warning in place until Tuesday at 4 a.m. Expect winds from the southwest 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph and waves 3 to 5 feet for Lake Tahoe.

The community is invited to the Tahoe Learning Haven's free March Forum on Wednesday, March 6 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to learn about all the athletic options after high school. From intramurals to team sports at Division 1 schools. Special presenter, Phil Bryant, will share his wealth of knowledge about college sports and what you need to do during high school to keep your options open!

Also, Sombreros will bring their taco truck to the forum before it gets underway, from 6:15 p.m. to 7 p.m., and students attending the forum will be given $5 off the dinner of their choosing.

There are 18 SNO-Parks on U.S. Forest Service land in California, ten in the Lake Tahoe Basin with many others just a short drive away. The parks offer cleared parking for vehicles, and opportunities for non-motorized winter activities including cross-country skiing, dog sledding, and snow play. A handful of SNO-Parks offer access to both motorized and non-motorized activities.

Using the SNO-Parks keeps drivers off the sides of US50, SR89, and SR88 where cars are often parked in the lane of travel, with young children walking along the roadway and/or sledding into traffic.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The community once again had an opportunity to engage with the leadership of Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) at the recent LTUSD Community Conversation. About 20 community members joined LTUSD staff, board members, and administrators for the meeting on January 16 and engaged in a discussion about the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within LTUSD.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall - Council Chambers at the Lake Tahoe Airport.
