Washoe Drive Fire burns 26 homes, 3,900 acres, Highway 395 between Carson City and Reno still closed
Submitted by Editor on Fri, 01/20/2012 - 12:57pmOfficials reported this morning that the Washoe Drive Fire destroyed 26 homes, and has currently consumed 3,900 acres.
At a 9 a.m. press conference, officials reported the blaze is 50 percent contained, and that 700 firefighters are working to extinguish hot spots in advance of the high wind that are forecast for this afternoon.
There were 20 homes reported lost last night, but in the light of day, personnel working the fire were able to get a better count of the structures that burned.

Burke, who lived near Whistler in British Columbia, was 29. She was injured Jan. 10 while training at a personal sponsor event at the Park City Mountain resort.
Tests revealed Burke suffered "irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood after cardiac arrest," according to a statement released by Burke's publicist, Nicole Wool.
Fire spreads from firebox into attic of South Tahoe home
Submitted by Editor on Fri, 01/20/2012 - 1:37amA house fire that started in a box in back of a fireplace and spread into the attic of a Cold Creek Trail home was knocked down Thursday night. No one was hurt in the blaze, which was largely confined to the attic and ceiling, said Lake Valley Fire Protection District Chief Gareth Harris.
The house, located at 2497 Cold Creek Trail is not habitable but still standing. The fire was reported at around 7 p.m. Estimated damage to the home is between $75,000 to $100,000, Harris said.
Ready for the wild: Tahoe bear cubs rehabilitated and set free
Submitted by Editor on Fri, 01/20/2012 - 1:29amThree bear cubs, nursed back to health by Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, Inc., were released into the wild this week.
The bears, each close to a year old, were brought to the South Lake Tahoe facility last summer where they were found malnourished and without mothers.
The California Department of Fish and Game released one of the cubs, a female, north of Truckee on Tuesday and two were taken to Alpine County on Wednesday. The cubs were put into winter dens made by Fish and Game biologists.
NHP: Highway 395 closed Friday from SR 431 Mount Rose to Carson City

Motorists should find alternative routes to Carson City as agencies continue to work on the fire.
