Quarry Fire in Stanislaus National Forest sending smoke into Lake Tahoe Basin

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The smell of smoke and hazy skies around Lake Tahoe on Saturday are from a fire burning in the Stanislaus National Forest. Two weeks ago there were 38 ignitions on the Forest from lightning storms. Most are out, but the U.S. Forest Service is letting the Quarry Fire burn within predetermined parameters to accomplish a few goals including reducing concentrations of dead ground fuels, re-establishing multigenerational timber stands, improving wildlife habitat, promoting vegetation diversity, and introducing fire into fire-adapted ecosystems.

Whether you are getting out this weekend for Tahoe’s amazing fall weather or you spent time this summer on the lake, trails, and beaches, you’ve been enjoying some of Lake Tahoe’s greatest assets: hundreds of square miles of public land and water. This Saturday is National Public Lands Day and a timely reminder of how fortunate we are that conservation programs under the Lake Tahoe Regional Plan have protected open space, set aside approximately 9,000 vacant lots in residential neighborhoods, and added more than a half mile of public shoreline.

South Tahoe Futbol teams do well at CUFA

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe Futbol Club (STFC) teams did well at last weekend's fall Come Up For Air (CUFA) tournament in South Lake Tahoe with five of the teams finishing either first or second.

The STFC-sponsored event attracted nearly 200 teams on both sides of the state line. The tournament is the local youth soccer club’s largest fundraiser and attracts teams from Nevada, Northern California, and other western states.

Fall Fish Fest canceled in South Lake Tahoe due to safety concerns

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU), with the support of the Great Basin Institute, has canceled the Fall Fish Fest originally planned for Oct. 14, 2023. The event has had challenges over the last few years due to a lack of staff or low water levels.

This year, LTBMU said there were public safety concerns about holding the festival due to anticipated large crowds, limited staffing capacity, and potential human-bear conflicts.

American Century Championship awards 52 area nonprofits with $121,250

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) distributed $121,250 in funds to 52 area non-profit organizations as a result of the 34th annual American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament.

As the tournament’s destination sponsor, the LTVA is responsible for the South Shore’s most impactful special event, coordinating with partners NBC Sports and American Century Investments, to ensure a successful and memorable experience for fans, locals, celebrities, and media.

Invasive New Zealand Mudsnails found in Lake Tahoe for first time

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - For the first time, invasive New Zealand Mudsnails (NZMS) have been found in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Program includes comprehensive monitoring of Lake Tahoe for aquatic invaders. Contract divers with Marine Taxonomic Services, Ltd. were underwater surveying invasive weeds on the South Shore and discovered tiny snails on the bottom of the lake nearly a half mile offshore from the mouth of the Upper Truckee River.

Letter: South Tahoe Chamber does not support possible City tax increase

On Tuesday, September 26 at 5:30 p.m., the South Lake Tahoe City Council will be discussing the possibility of instituting more taxes. Our Chamber believes that enough is enough. In the past five years, the voters have supported a sales tax increase, a Transient Occupancy Tax increase, and the elimination of about one thousand vacation rentals.

Tahoe Blue Event Center officially opens, full schedule of events slated

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - It was years in the making, but as the ribbon was cut at the Tahoe Blue Event Center on Monday, smiles quickly replaced all signs of the long, at times hard, journey that was taken to open the doors.

As invited guests were touring the new venue located in Stateline, final touches were being finished in the 4,200 - 6,000 seat arena and 10,000 square feet of meeting spaces, well-appointed seating around fireplaces in front on picture windows with views of the lake, Mt. Tallac, and Heavenly Mountain Resort.

East Shore Trail expansion underway; Donor opportunities with the Tahoe Fund

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Work is underway to expand the Tahoe East Shore Trail another eight miles past the original three miles between Incline Village and Sand Harbor. The first segment was completed in 2019 through a partnership of 13 agencies and groups and more than 600 Tahoe Fund donors. Together they were able to secure a $12.5 million federal grant to bring the scenic trail alive.

Chase International Foundation awards $12,000 to local non-profits

Chase International Foundation recently awarded over $12,000 to non-profit agencies in Northern Nevada and California as part of their Four Pillars of Giving grant program. PTSD NOW! of Incline Village, Nevada, Between Horses and Humans of Gardnerville, Nevada, and Escobar Martial Arts Club in South Lake Tahoe, California, were presented with donations from the Foundation’s bi-annual grant process.

September 23 is 33rd annual National Public Lands Day - free admission, volunteer opportunities

There are five days every year that the National Park Service offers free entrance to more than 400 National parks that charge an entrance fee. This includes free entrance to Joshua Tree or Death Valley and free parking at Lake Mead and Lake Mohave.

The next free day at National Parks is on Veterans Day, November 11.

South Lake Tahoe man sues the California Tahoe Conservancy after flooding of home

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe man is suing the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) after his home was filled with water for 80 days this past winter.

Damian Sowers, a lifelong local who lives on El Dorado Avenue, can now only visit the home his parents built 60 years ago. The house was filled with 16" of water that came in from the Upper Truckee River during the heavy 2022-23 winter.

Robert James “Buzz” Bruzzese passed away unexpectedly on November 9, 2022. He was born on March 21, 1953 in Queens, New York. Shortly before his first birthday, his family moved to St. Clair Shores, Michigan where he lived until he left to attend Western Michigan University. After graduating, he moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1978.

Two planes collide at Reno Air Races, killing both pilots

UPDATE: The Reno Air Racing Association has released the names of the two members of their racing family who died in Sunday's crash. Nick Macy and Chris Rushing passed away in a landing accident. Both men were expertly skilled pilots and Gold winners in the T-6 Class, Macy piloted Six-Cat and Rushing flew Baron’s Revenge. Families of both pilots have been notified and support services are onsite as they deal with this tragedy.

20th annual South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge Kid's Fishing Derby

It is time for the 20th annual Kid's Fishing Day at Lake Baron. The South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge is hosting the event on Saturday, September 23 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. All of the fishing gear is provided, or you can bring your own.

Utility work continues on State Route 28 and paving on State Route 89

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. – Caltrans is advising motorists of continued traffic-interfering work on State Highways 28 and 89 in north Lake Tahoe next week.

Southwest Gas and its contractor, Q&D Construction, continue to work on a gas line replacement project on Highway 28 between Tahoe City and Kings Beach. In addition, pavement repairs are scheduled on various sections of Highway 89.
