Helicopters working on new chairlifts at Heavenly and Northstar
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/16/2022 - 11:42pmAs the ski season gets closer, progress is being made on chairlift upgrades on the Comstock lift at Northstar, and on the North Bowl chair at Heavenly.
Aerial work by helicopters recently occurred at both of the Vail Resorts.
Now that parts are in place, Heavenly crews have begun building the detachable four-person high-speed North Bowl chairlift. Concrete is expected to be poured via helicopter at the end of the month on the lift.
DCSO asks for public's help in identifying pair suspected of tool theft
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/16/2022 - 10:52pmSTATELINE, Nev. – After exhausting all leads, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) is asking for the public’s assistance to identify individuals involved in tool thefts in the Stateline casino area.
On July 27, 2022, at approximately 9:22 a.m., an unknown male and female stole a black backpack full of tools from a maintenance area of Harvey’s Casino.
The male was wearing a light grey t-shirt with grey shorts. The female was wearing a tan dress with a blue overshirt.
After the theft, the pair quickly left the area and walked into South Lake Tahoe.

Douglas County VHR Advisory Board meeting postponed

All items scheduled for that agenda will be moved to the next agenda for a meeting that has not yet been scheduled.
On the agenda was one item, to go over possible changes to the VHR ordinance including noise, fines, clustering, and how to handle parking, especially in condo/multi-family units.

According to Shelter Animals Count, a national database, there are six-percent more animals entering shelters than leaving. That’s a startling and scary number for thousands of homeless animals in need of help. The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) has seen a downtick in foot traffic and community members coming in to adopt.

Spring Valley woman dies while swimming in Emerald Bay
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/15/2022 - 3:34pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 46-year-old woman from Spring Valley, Calif. died on Sunday after swimming in Lake Tahoe's Emerald Bay.
First responders were called to the area at 4:57 p.m. on August 14. Two deputies with the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) assisted a woman who had gone into distress while swimming near Fannette Island. She was brought onboard the boat she'd been swimming from and CPR was started immediately by bystanders.
Coast Guard surge operation halts four unsafe passenger vessels after boarding 60 boats in Lake Tahoe

At this time the Coast Guard is not releasing the names of boats or operators since all allegations need to be adjudicated through the civil penalty process before releasing more information.

Wylder Hotel Hope Valley continues its Eastern Sierra History Series this Saturday, August 20 at 1 p.m. with a 50-minute presentation, Tragedy at St. Francis Dam - The Worst Manmade Disaster in California History.
On March 12, 1928, the city of Los Angeles’s St Francis Dam collapsed, killing over 600 people and destroying everything in its 50-mile rampage to the sea. The colossal engineering failure brought disgrace to the LA Aqueduct’s William Mulholland, while the Los Angeles Water Bureau did everything it could to erase the horrific event from history.
Two large illegal weapons and drug arrests in Northern Nevada

On Friday, August 12, a 24-year-old Washington State man was arrested on multiple charges by the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol after a traffic stop led to the seizure of multiple illegal firearms, drugs, and cash.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – When the first flames of the Caldor Fire reached the Lake Tahoe Basin, dropping over Echo Summit, an image that stays with many was that of Matthew Henderson stomping out a spot fire in front of the Celio Ranch in Meyers on August 30, 2021.
Henderson, who has followed California fires since 2005, will be honored along with another on-the-scene journalist Lysée Mitri, local fire personnel, City of South Lake Tahoe officials, and the U.S. Forest Service at a community ceremony on August 17 to mark the first anniversary of the Caldor Fire.
Tahoe Conservancy provides $406,500 to fund planning for protection for Lake Tahoe communities during wildfires

Tahoe RCD will coordinate regional efforts to update Tahoe’s “pre-attack plans” and the Lake Tahoe Basin Community Wildfire and Protection Plan to reflect lessons learned from the 2021 Caldor Fire.

Public invited to test out Dark Sky light bulbs in South Lake Tahoe

The City of South Lake Tahoe is asking the public to visit the two sites and vote on which ones they prefer. There are QR codes posted to the light poles so voting can take place directly from smartphones.

Each day Tuesday through Thursday, most areas in the region will have a 20 to 40 percent chance of seeing a storm, 10 to 30 percent in South Lake Tahoe. Storms are most likely in the afternoons and evenings, but overnight showers and storms cannot be ruled out.

Another power outage in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty Utilities is reporting another power outage in South Lake Tahoe, this time to 3,929 customers in Tahoe Sierra, Black Bart, and other areas along Pioneer Trail.
Crews are working to restore power but no estimated restoration time has been given. No cause has been released.

Deadline extended for filing papers to run for South Lake Tahoe City Council

The original deadline to file was August 12, and if not all incumbents filed, the deadline would be extended by one week. South Lake Tahoe Mayor Devin Middlebrook chose not to run again, so the deadline is now August 17 to file.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Historical Society wraps up its popular summer series on Tuesday, August 16 with an encore performance. They are hosting "Tahoe History Talks on the Beach" and bringing back guest speaker, South Lake Tahoe urbanized bear expert Toogee Sielsch. He will share the history of the black bears on the South Shore.
The free beach talk is from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the beach side of Lakeview Commons, the corner of Lakeview Avenue and Lake Tahoe Blvd. Donations for the Lake Tahoe Historical Society will be accepted.
Power outage for one area of South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/12/2022 - 12:01pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you don't live on West, Lukins, Ward and the Venice Avenue area, you probably didn't even know there was a power outage in South Lake Tahoe.
Power went out about 11:47 a.m. on Friday, August 12, and it is estimated by Liberty Utilities to be restored by 4 p.m. according to a phone message customers received, though their website outage map now says 2:29 p.m.
There had been a report of a smoking power pole at the corner of 15th and Roger earlier in the day.
Firefighters respond to fire at Emerald Bay

10:00AM UPDATE: The fire at Emerald Bay is holding at .25 acres with a hand line in place around the fire. A helicopter is assisting with the fire along with USFS, and other agencies are wrapping up.

Tahoe Climbing Coalition is hosting a global climbing day social party on August 20 at 4 p.m. The event will include beer for those 21 and over, food, and fun climbing games. The event will take place at the Adventure Fit Dojo located at 183 US-50, Suite E, Round Hill, Nev.
This will be a fun social event and opportunity to come and support our local climbing stewardship organization, the Tahoe Climbing Coalition.
Beer provided by Coldwater Brewery and food from Beach Hut Deli.

Game Time Basketball Camp held in South Lake Tahoe

Sixty-seven kids took to the court over the course of the first four days of the camp. Most of the kids were from the South Lake Tahoe and Stateline (El Dorado and Douglas county communities) who had been eagerly awaiting the camp, and they were joined by kids from hundreds of miles away.

Extended closure of SR-89 eastbound on-ramp in Truckee starts Monday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/11/2022 - 3:28pmTRUCKEE – Caltrans is alerting State Route 89 (SR-89) motorists in Truckee of an upcoming extended closure of the SR-89 south on-ramp to eastbound Interstate 80 (I-80).
The SR-89 south interstate entrance is scheduled to be closed around the clock from 5 a.m. Monday, August 15 through 5 p.m. Friday, September 2 for concrete work. Several concrete slabs are being replaced, which requires extended curing times before reopening to traffic. During the closure, a signed detour will direct motorists along Donner Pass Road to Coldstream Road for access to the I-80 eastbound on-ramp.
Markleeville residents air concerns, some needs are being addressed
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/11/2022 - 2:37pmALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - It has been one week since two days of heavy rain fell over the Tamarack burn scar, causing a mountain of mud and debris to move through the town of Markleeville and creating a large hole under SR-89, closing the main artery for vehicle travel.
The residents of Markleeville voiced their concerns during a Town Hall meeting with the Alpine County Board of Supervisors and Caltrans on August 6, then again during a special BOS meeting on August 10.
Heavenly extends summer activities until October 2
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/11/2022 - 12:37pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavenly is extending its summer operations on weekends through October 2. The resort originally planned to close around Labor Day before preparing for winter operations.
Activities that will remain open include the Ridge Rider Mountain Coaster, Gem Panning, and sightseeing and hiking trail access via the Gondola and Tamarack Express.
These activities as well as food and beverage at Tamarack Lodge and Café Blue will continue Fridays-Sundays during normal operating hours, 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. Through Labor Day, summer activities are open daily.
Drainage work scheduled on State Route 89 near Palisades Tahoe

Maintenance crews will be cleaning highway drainage systems from Olympic Valley Road to Goose Meadows Campground between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday, August 15 through Thursday, August 18. During this work, one-way traffic control will be required with up to 20-minute travel delays expected.

At their last meeting, the Council voted 4-0 to push a new 6% sales tax on cannabis, making permanent what was supposed to be a temporary fee. This tax will require voter approval however - so this November, I’m voting No on measure G - no new taxes on locals.

Mud slides down onto Alpine County home of former South Lake Tahoe business owners
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/10/2022 - 8:34pmALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - The two days of rain that saturated the Tamarack Fire burn scar last week, causing the town of Markleeville to fill with mud and lose their main artery of SR-89, also caused the hillside to slide into the home of former South Lake Tahoe residents, Larry and Casey Braun.
Several feet of mud came into the Braun home and shop on Horsethief Circle in the Mesa Vista area of Alpine County without warning. The wall of mud, debris, and boulders came down and enveloped their home, their shop, and their fifth-wheel trailer.

On August 8, Bread & Broth was very fortunate to have the club members sponsor a "Monday Meal Adopt A Day of Nourishment" as part of their community outreach.

Lake Tahoe Community College’s forestry & fire programs receive funding for scholarships, equipment

The Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy at LTCC is also receiving grant funding from the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation for required gear and equipment purchases, allowing even more students to be able to participate in the program.

American Century Investments, NBC Sports, Visit Lake Tahoe providing $125,000 in donations

Vallejo woman arrested after allegedly dragging man from vehicle in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/09/2022 - 2:35pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 41-year-old woman from Vallejo, California was arrested on Monday after allegedly dragging a male victim from a vehicle in the Raley's parking lot.
There was a verbal argument Monday morning between Antoinette Sunday Luna and a man in their vehicle in the east parking lot of the grocery center near Stateline. The victim was halfway climbing out of the vehicle when Luna kept driving, dragging him and causing an injury, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Scott Crivelli.
The Lake House Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe expands to outdoor fine dining, doubles capacity
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/09/2022 - 2:04pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake House Tahoe, the popular dining establishment in South Lake Tahoe that was once home to Passaretti's, was acquired by the Lake Tahoe AleWorX family of restaurants in February of 2022. Once the transfer from Jeff and Misty Sparrow was finalized with Luca Genasci, the new team quickly got to work on constructing the approved plans for an outdoor patio expansion.
That patio is now completed and open.
Search continues for missing 16-year-old Truckee teen
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/09/2022 - 1:33pmMultiple agencies and volunteers continue to search for 16-year-old Kiely Rodni, the Truckee teen who was last seen near the Prosser Family Campground at a party early Saturday, August 6, 2022.
The Placer County Sheriff's Office considers her disappearance an abduction case. A $50,000 reward is being offered by the Rodni family. Also, a website, www.findkiely.com has been established by family and friends to aid in the search.
