Lake Wind Advisory and chance of rain/snow before a sunny weekend in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A quick storm brings a chance for light rain and snow Friday, mainly for northeast California and northwest Nevada, including the Lake Tahoe Basin, with gusty winds for many areas. High pressure returns over the weekend with tranquil weather persisting through at least the middle of next week.

A Lake Wind Advisory is in place for Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are expected with waves on the lake, 2 to 4 feet.

Next week, a ridge will build over the western U.S. pushing the storm track to the north. The ridge doesn`t look quite as strong in recent simulations, so it is possible we could see a weaker storm brush through the area. However, most all simulations show little or no precipitation next week with drier than normal conditions possible through much of January, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Three-day forecast from NWS Reno:

Friday - A chance of snow before 10 am, then rain and snow likely. Partly sunny, with a high near 39. Southwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. The chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than a half-inch possible.

Friday Night - Mostly clear, with a low around 16. Southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight.

Saturday - Sunny, with a high near 43. Calm wind.

Saturday Night - Mostly clear, with a low around 13. Calm wind.

Sunday - Sunny, with a high near 45. Calm wind.

Sunday Night - Partly cloudy, with a low around 16.
