Latest storm drops about a foot of snow at Lake Tahoe ski resorts

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just a few days after the monthly snow measurement at Phillips Station west of Lake Tahoe showed the snowpack at 30 percent of normal for the date, a fairly decent storm dropped much-needed snow over the Sierra and Lake Tahoe.

The UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab in Soda Springs reports 13.6" of snow over the last 24 hours, with local ski areas stating 11"-13" snow fell during Saturday's storm.

The quick-moving storm dropped enough snow at lower elevations to have chain controls on Saturday down to Camino on US50, as well as Reno and the Carson area. There is no more snow forecast until Tuesday so people can shovel out, and plows can get the roads clear.

It was cold overnight, with reports from the Carson Valley down to -1 in some areas, and single digits throughout the region.

The Tuesday-Wednesday storm isn't a bit one, and at this time is expected to drop about 2"-4" of snow over the two days at lake level, perhaps a foot over the crest. Another storm is on the horizon for the Martin Luther King Birthday holiday weekend.

As of noon on Sunday, road controls remain on US50 from Pollock Pines just east of Bridal Veil Falls, and then Sand Flat to Meyers, on I80 from Kingvale to the Nevada State Line, on SR89 over Luther Pass and along the west shore from South Lake Tahoe to Truckee, on SR28 around the lake, SR207 Kingsbury Grade, US50 Spooner Summit, and SR88 from Pine Grove to Woodfords.
