SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The United States Postal Service (USPS) is having special pick-up dates for mail in South Lake Tahoe this weekend after weeks of delayed mail service.
Severe winter storms in the Tahoe Basin have impacted access to some postal delivery routes in the Tahoe Basin including South Lake Tahoe and Incline Village, causing customers to wait at the post office for over an hour to collect undelivered mail.
Due to limited access set in by severe winter weather to routes in the North and South Upper Truckee neighborhoods, along with Meyers and some other South Lake Tahoe areas, special pick-ups will be available at the South Lake Tahoe Main Post Office, 1046 Al Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
Special pick-ups will be available through this holiday weekend Saturday, January 14, Sunday, January 15, and Monday, January 16 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. for pick-ups only. Retail services will operate at normal hours on Saturday, January 14, and reopen on Tuesday, January 16.
Mail pick-ups for those impacted will continue to remain available at the South Lake Tahoe Main Post Office during regular retail hours.
Incline Village residents served by the Incline Village post office located at 770 Mays Blvd Incline Village, Nev., are also encouraged to retrieve their mail at the local post office during regular retail hours Monday-Friday 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Customers are asked to present photo I.D. for all package and mail pick-ups.
Regular mail delivery will resume to impacted delivery routes as conditions improve, said USPS.
When events such as the current winter storm occur, USPS says they make thoughtful decisions regarding delivery and retail operations. The Postal Service will make every attempt to deliver to all addresses, as long as it is safe to do so.
"We ask for patience as we hold our solemn duties to provide the safest, fastest, and most efficient method of providing mail service to our residents," they said in an email to South Tahoe Now. "We ask homeowners and businesses to ensure sidewalks, walkways, and steps are clear of ice and snow, to help facilitate safe delivery."
USPS provided a few ways to help keep your carrier safe this winter:
Clear enough snow from curbside boxes to allow mail trucks to approach the box, deliver the mail, and drive away from the box without danger or the need for backing.
Walkways should be cleared of snow and ice and allow enough traction to avoid slips, trips, or falls.
Steps should also be kept clear of ice and snow and in good repair so as not to cause injury to the letter carriers or others who visit the customer’s home.
Overhangs should be clear and free of snow and ice to avoid injury.
Leave a light on, if possible, to illuminate walkways and porches.
Add a street address to mailboxes so they’re easier for carriers to find.
The Postal Service apologizes for any inconvenience customers may experience and we remain committed to delivering to communities daily with a dedicated focus on the safety of its employees.
Many retail services including temporary forwards, stamps, and more are also available anytime, online at usps.com.
