Travel through the Sierra Nevada not recommended due to heavy snow

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It is slow going through the Sierra Saturday as the latest atmospheric river hits California, bringing heavy snow to the mountains.

Coming with the snow is a mess on area highways.

I-80 at this hour is closed due to low visibility and spinouts, and US-50 has been held at times for the same reason and avalanche control though it is currently open.

SR-88 is closed from Red Lake to the Carson Spur.

SR-89 continues to be closed around Emerald Bay.

It is very important to follow the Caltrans road map and NDOT road map and not rely on mapping apps that don't always have the most recent information. They can be found here: https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ and https://www.nvroads.com/. Follow current weather with the National Weather Service as well.

Even though drivers shouldn't need to be told, every storm brings with it those who pull over illegally on highways for snow play. Even though hard to see fog lines in the snow, the "No Parking" signs still need to be followed as well as pulling safely cars off all lanes of travel. The California Highway Patrol patrols the common areas of Twin Bridges, Strawberry and Kirkwood to keep the cars out of unsafe areas. There are safe and legal places to go with Snow Parks, more information is here: https://ohv.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=30701.
