ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - A recent Lake Tahoe storm with wind gusts of 65 mph and above and waves 6-8 feet high caused damage to Marine 24, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District's (TDFPD) fire and rescue boat.
The winds caused the boat to crash against the dock, causing significant damage. The boat then floated to the shoreline.
"We expect the boat to be out of service for fire and rescue missions for
TDFPD said this incident is a perfect example of the immediate need for a safety pier on the shores of Lake Tahoe. A public safety pier would not only serve TDFPD but other government agencies such as the Department of Wildlife and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office to name a few.
Currently, TDFPD moves Marine 24 from pier to pier to get around numerous challenges; low water levels, weather protection, and accessibility for crews to respond to water emergencies. Being one of the only boats available year-round 24/7, it is imperative personnel can access the boat safely
and respond quickly in situations where every second counts, said Guevin.
Since her launch in 2017, Marine 24 responded to numerous calls for service including vessels on fire, water supply for house fires, and patients requiring a water rescue or extraction from remote beaches. A donation from Lisa Maloff, the Angel of Tahoe, helped bring the boat to Lake Tahoe.
"There is a significant need for this type of service on Lake Tahoe and Marine 24 has been an outstanding resource to protect the public throughout the Tahoe Basin. We will continue to keep the public up to date on the timeline of Marine 24’s relaunch back into Big Blue. We appreciate your constant support towards this life-saving program," added Guevin.
