SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) is preparing for South Lake Tahoe's upcoming Point-in-Time (PIT) Count on Thursday, February 24 from 5:00 a.m. - 7:00 a.m. and volunteers are needed. The PIT Count is conducted once every two years to gather data on how many homeless people sleep outside in winter.
Every community across the country is required to conduct a PIT count, as it helps determine future funding availability from the State and Federal government to support our unsheltered neighbors. TCH is taking the lead for the Tahoe Basin count and is also supporting the Western Slope for their count the day before.
The PIT Count will be conducted early in the morning so they will have hot coffee and pastries available for volunteers who will also be provided with training and supplies. Volunteers are paired off into teams and assigned a designated area to search for people experiencing unsheltered homelessness. There's a quick survey that can be easily completed on smartphones. TCH will also have small care packages to provide people meet during the count, along with information about accessing services.
PIT Counts are an important and impactful experience, even if early in the morning and during the cold of winter.
"You will gain a new perspective, learn new skills, and make new friends," said TCH Executive Director Cheyenne Purrington.
