End to an almost dry month in Lake Tahoe, start of February not much different

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dry and mild conditions will prevail through Monday ahead of a dry cold front that will bring colder temperatures and increased winds to kick off February. Benign and dry weather will persist with a blocking ridge deflecting the storm track for the Sierra and western
Nevada until further notice, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Aside, from another round of potentially gusty east winds along the Sierra crest next weekend, we will maintain a rather quiet pattern with mild temperatures and dry weather.

If no rain comes Monday, this will be the third-lowest month of precipitation for Lake Tahoe on records kept at Tahoe City, according to the NWS in Reno. As of Sunday, .17 inches of precipitation have fallen at the lake. The record dryest was in 2015 when .03 inches fell, and 2022 is behind 1991 when there were .08 inches.

Lake Tahoe is not going to see anything precipitation-wise through at least February 9th or 10th as a ridge of high pressure is building back up. It is hard to see past that date, NWS Reno said.

October 2021 set the all-time record precipitation for the month at
Tahoe City – 9.86 inches, followed by a dry November and high pressure with no snow at Tahoe City. After high pressure blocked heavier events early in the month, big storms in December brought the third-highest snowfall (105”) for the month since 1909. Since 1893, there has never been a January with zero precipitation at Reno (though there was a trace in 1966).

Temperatures for February are leaning below average through mid-late February, below-normal precipitation through the 9th but possibly trending to normal, with below-median snowpack by mid-late February.
