South Lake Tahoe CHP announces DUI checkpoint this weekend

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) office of South Lake Tahoe will be holding a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) checkpoint on Saturday, February 19, 2022. The checkpoint will be set up in the unincorporated area of El Dorado County at 8:00 p.m. and run until about 2:00 a.m. Sunday.

The sobriety checkpoint will be staffed by a team of CHP officers who will be controlling traffic, evaluating drivers' sobriety, and handing out literature warning of the dangers of drinking and driving. Drivers' license checks will be conducted and appropriate enforcement action will be taken when necessary.

The main reason why law enforcement agencies announce when and where they plan to place DUI checkpoints is that they are legally required to do so. In 1990, the concept of DUI checkpoints was legally challenged on the basis that they violated Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures.

Funding for this program is from a California Office of Traffic Safety grant through the National Traffic Safety Administration.
